Historic Win for HRC-Backed Candidate Kyrsten Sinema

Historic Win for HRC-Backed Candidate Kyrsten Sinema

Today, HRC released the following statement on the victory of HRC-endorsed Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in her bid to become Arizona’s next U.S. Senator. Sinema will be the first openly bisexual person elected to the U.S. Senate.

“Arizona voters rejected Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s politics of bigotry and fear and made history by electing bold pro-equality champion Kyrsten Sinema as the nation’s first openly bisexual U.S. Senator,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “For more than a year, HRC has worked to organize 800,000 equality voters across the state and we are proud to have helped Senator-elect Sinema across the finish line in a tight race. We celebrate this incredible moment and look forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work with Sinema, and Arizona Congressmembers Tom O’Halleran, Ann Kirkpatrick, Raul Grijalva, Ruben Gallego, and Greg Stanton to move equality forward for all Arizonans.”

HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Arizona for more than a year, and had 18 staff on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history. In the final four days of GOTV in Arizona, HRC members and supporters completed over 450 volunteer shifts and knocked on over 12,000 doors. Member and supporter volunteers sent over 43,000 text messages in the final weeks. Since launching, we’ve helped register 2,300 Arizonans to vote by mail, online and in-person. HRC hosted six Equality Action Academy trainings to give HRC members and supporters the tools they need to take action locally in legislative advocacy and in support of pro-equality candidate campaigns. Working with scores of partner organizations, HRC also led field organizing efforts around the state to mobilize voters in support of HRC-backed, pro-equality champions including Senator-elect Sinema, Representatives-elect Kirkpatrick and Stanton, and others who will fight for LGBTQ rights, and for the rights and welfare of all Arizonans.

HRC’s Equality Votes PAC invested more than $3 million in an ad blitz focused on voter engagement and turning out the vote in key states and congressional districts, including Arizona. The digital, direct mail, text and phone voter contact program focused on educating voters about early voting options, mobilizing them to turn out on November 6th, and holding Trump-enabling candidates accountable for their extreme positions on issues such as health care, immigration, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights and more.

Martha McSally:

Sinema is the first openly bisexual member of the U.S. House of Representative. Throughout her public service, she has been a champion for the LGBTQ community, serving as a co-chair of the chamber’s Equality Caucus, earning a perfect 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecards during her three terms in Congress, and co-sponsoring the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights law. Sinema defeated Rep. Martha McSally, a longtime opponent of marriage equality who has consistently supported discriminatory, anti-LGBTQ policies and proposals while in Congress, including an amendment that would allow discrimination against LGBTQ people by taxpayer-funded organizations.

Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC (www.hrc.org) and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

RIP. Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee has died at 95: “Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee, confirmed to the Associated Press that Lee was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.”

DRAIN THE SWAMP. John Oliver points out that Trump has not, “he has not drained the swamp one little bit.” “Trump never meant drain the swamp,” and that’s obvious “by what has happened since,” Oliver said. “Because he promised to clean up D.C., and instead the guy in charge of the CFPB is holding hands with loan sharks, the EPA might as well be run by a sentient piece of coal, and his head of oil-rig safety wants the industry to blow up his digits like an under-regulated oil well.”

ANNOYING STRAPHANGER OF THE DAY. Woman throws herself birthday party on NYC subway.

HILLARY WILL RUN IN 2020. According to longtime Clinton adviser Mark Penn: ‘In their Journal op-ed, Penn, an adviser and pollster to the Clintons from 1995-2008, and former New York City politician Andrew Stein wrote that in a 2020 run, Clinton would reinvent herself “as a liberal firebrand.” The twice-failed presidential candidate would not “let a little thing like two stunning defeats stand in the way of her claim to the White House,” they wrote.’

BUDDIES. Putin and Trump greet each other enthusiastically in front of NATO allies.

TRANSGENDER VETERANS. The VA should pay for our gender transition surgeries. ‘Major medical associations have long affirmed the necessity of transition-related health care, including surgeries. But although the VA provides mental health counseling and hormone therapy to transgender veterans, it draws the line at surgeries—a regulation that has been critiqued by the American Medical Association, among others. That policy, formally implemented in 1999, has a widespread impact.’

ICE-T. I’ve never had a bagel or a cup of coffee in my life.

PUERTO RICO. Trump wants to cut off disaster funding: ‘President Trump doesn’t want to give Puerto Rico any more federal money for its recovery from Hurricane Maria, White House officials have told congressional appropriators and leadership. This is because he claims, without evidence, that the island’s government is using federal disaster relief money to pay off debt.’

PUERTO RICO. David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris celebrate the island’s recovery at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico.

ABUSE OF POWER. Dems to investigate Trump’s threats to CNN and Washington Post. ‘House Democrats plan to investigate whether President Trump abused White House power by targeting — and trying to punish with “instruments of state power” — the Washington Post and CNN, incoming House intelligence committee chairman Adam Schiff said in an interview for “Axios on HBO.”‘

LIVERPOOL. Woman found dead in gay cruising area.

WORLD TREE OF HOPE. Help save it.

NAME CHANGE OF THE DAY. Kellan Hartmann is now Callum Huntsman.

Wisconsin High School Students Give Nazi Salute in Prom Photo

Wisconsin High School Students Give Nazi Salute in Prom Photo

The Baraboo school district in Wisconsin is investigating after a photo was tweeted showing members of the Baraboo High School Class of 2019 giving the Nazi salute before their junior prom last spring.

Madison365 reports: ‘The photo was first posted in an online album of BHS prom photos at wheelmemories.com, the website of local motorcycle photographer Peter Gust. It was posted to Twitter last night by the account @GoBaraboo, which calls itself a “parody account.” It was posted with the caption, “We even got the black kid to throw it up #BarabooProud.” Gust’s website says he has a son who is a junior at Baraboo High School. It is not clear whether Gust’s son is in the photo. Gust’s website also indicates that he is a retired teacher…Gust has removed the entire prom photo album, replacing it with a statement that reads, in part, “due malevolent behavior on the part of some in society; this page has been modified. It is too bad that there are those in society who can and do take the time to be jerks; knowingly and willingly to be jerks! … To anyone that was hurt I sincerely apologize.”’

@News_Republic Can someone please explain and/or investigate why the graduating class from Baraboo High School is throwing the Nazi salute in this image? Has @BarabooSD commented on this? Has anyone at your paper even asked or investigated the meaning of this? pic.twitter.com/YspaHfq3Tk

Baraboo Schools Superintendent Lori Mueller tweeted a statement: “The photo of students posted to #BarabooProud is not reflective of the educational values and beliefs of the School District of Baraboo. The District will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address.”

If anybody from Baraboo High School in Wisconsin can clue me in on why it appears the entire male class of 2018 is throwing up a Sig Heil during their prom photos – that would be great.

It is so hard to find words…

This is why every single day we work hard to educate. We need to explain what is the danger of hateful ideology rising. Auschwitz with its gas chambers was at the very end of the long process of normalizing and accommodating hatred. t.co/13AzZaMGJR
