Trump fired Jeff Sessions. His replacement will be even worse for LGBTQ rights.
Jeff Sessions has used the Department of Justice to attack LGBTQ rights nonstop, but Matthew Whitaker is about to take it to the next level.
Trump Fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Replaces Him with Loyalist Who Will Oversee Mueller Probe
Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sessions ‘resigned’ at Trump’s request and Trump replaced him with Sessions’ chief of staff Matthew Whitaker, a loyalist who wrote a column for CNN last year asserting that special counsel Robert Mueller was going too far with his investigation.
Wrote Whitaker in the column: “It does not take a lawyer or even a former federal prosecutor like myself to conclude that investigating Donald Trump’s finances or his family’s finances falls completely outside of the realm of his 2016 campaign and allegations that the campaign coordinated with the Russian government or anyone else. That goes beyond the scope of the appointment of the special counsel.”
The Hill reports: “The move means that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will no longer oversee the federal Russia investigation, which he has looked over since Sessions recused himself early last year due to his work on Trump’s campaign.”
Rosenstein headed to the White House after the firing for a “preplanned” meeting on a “substantive matter.”

Trump tweeted about the departure: “We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well……..We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date.”

The move comes amid chatter that Mueller is planning indictments, and that Donald Trump Jr. is concerned about being indicted.

Nancy Pelosi thinks Dems should work with Republicans. Haha, NO
It’s time to let the Democratic party be led by bold, progressive ideas rather than the fantasy of ‘bipartisanship.’
Mitch McConnell, Jack White, Mueller Indictments, Demi Lovato, Jim Jordan, Jon Tester, Ariana Grande: HOT LINKS
PRESIDENTIAL HARASSMENT. Mitch McConnell calls House oversight of the president “harassment” – “The whole issue of presidential harassment is interesting. I remember when we tried it in the late ’90s. We impeached President Clinton. His numbers went up and ours went down. And we under-performed in the next election. So, the Democrats in the House will have to decide just how much presidential harassment they think is good strategy. I’m not so sure it’ll work for them.”
MONTANA. Jon Tester wins re-election to Senate: “Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester will win re-election to a third term, fending off a strong challenge from Republican nominee Matt Rosendale, NBC News has projected. NBC News made the call on Wednesday. The race had been too close to call on election night. Tester survived despite voting no on Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. Decisions to vote against the judge doomed some of his red-state Democratic colleagues.”
MIDTERMS RESULTS. Something stinks in Florida and Georgia.
MUELLER. House Democrats move to protect special counsel’s findings: “House Democrats say they’re also ready to act as a backstop if Trump follows through on more than 18 months of pent-up angst and fires Mueller or tries to meddle with the special counsel’s work through a major shakeup at the Justice Department. Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has already pledged to make sure Mueller’s “documentation is preserved” and the likely next House speaker also holds in her back pocket the threat of launching impeachment hearings against Trump if the president tries to oust Mueller or if the special counsel’s investigators ultimately uncover a smoking gun involving criminal behavior.”
BEAUTIFUL. Trump upset he can’t talk about how hot Ivanka is.
INDICTMENTS. Is Donald Jr. worried?
HOUSE GOP BATTLE. Rep. Jim Jordan challenges Rep.Kevin McCarthy for House minority leader: “I plan to run for minority leader. In 2016, the American people elected Republicans to come here and change this town. I think the president is doing just that, but I don’t think they see the same intensity from folks in Congress, folks in the House of Representatives.”
JACK WHITE. White Stripes frontman reacts after women say they were stopped from kissing by an usher at a concert: “Two people expressing affection shouldn’t have to hide.”

Ezra Miller Doesn’t Identify as Male or Female, Says Director and Producer of ‘Gay Revolution’ Movie Harassed Him
Ezra Miller by Gage Skidmore (CC BY-SA 2.0)
Ezra Miller is profiled in The Hollywood Reporter this week and revealed his #MeToo moment and spoke about his sexual orientation.
Miller said that he had never shared his story of harassment, but didn’t go into too many specifics: ‘This bleeds into Miller’s own #MeToo moment, which he has never shared, with an unnamed director and producer. “They gave me wine and I was underaged,” he recalls. “They were like, ‘Hey, want to be in our movie about gay revolution?’ And I was like, ‘No, you guys are monsters.’” He’s on a roll now. “It’s a great f**kin’ age of being like, ‘You know what? That sh*t’s unacceptable,’ And it’s amazing for a lot of us to watch. ‘Cause, like, we all knew it was unacceptable when we f**king survived it. That’s what Hollywood is. I thought we all knew we were sex workers.””
Miller also spoke about his sexual orientation and not identifying as anything: “Yeah, absolutely. Which is to say, I don’t identify. Like, f**k that. Queer just means no, I don’t do that. I don’t identify as a man. I don’t identify as a woman. I barely identify as a human.”

RAINBOW WAVE: GLAAD celebrates history-making midterm election outcomes
GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today celebrated the LGBTQ-affirming wave of elections in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as key victories in Governorships and Statehouses nationwide. GLAAD also applauded voters in Massachusetts for supporting a “Yes” vote on Question 3, upholding the state’s transgender nondiscrimination law which protects transgender people from discrimination in public spaces like restaurants, hotels and hospitals. The victory in Massachusetts marks the first statewide popular vote in favor of rights for transgender Americans.
The 2018 midterm elections were historic for LGBTQ, people of color and women candidates as several swept to victory in a wave of opposition to the Trump Administration’s anti-LGBTQ, hate-fueled, and anti-woman policies. As of this morning, the LGBTQ Victory Fund notes that LGBTQ people won 8 federal office seats, 86 state office seats, and 34 local office seats. Sharice Davids of Kansas became the first out Native American woman elected to Congress. Angie Craig of Minnesota and Chris Pappas of New Hampshire became their states’ first out officials elected to Congress. Jared Polis of Colorado became the first openly gay person elected Governor. Bi incumbent Governor Kate Brown of Oregon was re-elected to a new term and incumbent Senator Tammy Baldwin will continue to represent Wisconsin as an out U.S. Senator. Out incumbent members of Congress David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, Mark Pocan of Wisconsin and Mark Tacano of California were all re-elected.
“This election is shaping up to be truly historic for LGBTQ candidates and, coupled with the change in leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, shows a rejection of the hate-fueled politics of the Trump Administration that have heartlessly targeted LGBTQ people, women, immigrants, Muslims and all vulnerable populations,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “The new House of Representatives is a critical check against the Trump Administration’s continued abuse of power and a strong signal that acceptance and inclusion are core American values. We must continue to grow the energy and enthusiasm from diverse voters across the country as LGBTQ Americans and our allies continue to push forward for equal protections under the law and grow support for writing explicit anti-discrimination into the U.S. Constitution.”
Last month, GLAAD launched its first-ever ‘Electing Acceptance’ candidate survey – the only national candidate survey dedicated to LGBTQ acceptance – which received responses from 356 candidates running for U.S. House and U.S. Senate seats, as well as for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, in the 2018 midterm election. 245 Democratic candidates responded and only 32 Republican candidates responded. 99% of the Democrats who responded are categorized as ‘allies,’ meaning they responded they are ‘comfortable’ across seven scenarios involving LGBTQ people.
In the lead up to the election, GLAAD launched the Amp Your Voice campaign and online action center, where users were encouraged to register to vote, take action on state and federal legislation, contact elected officials, and participate in other GLAAD actions to inspire LGBTQ Americans and allies to vote in the midterm elections. GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project has documented more than 81 direct attacks on LGBTQ people – and especially transgender people – since President Trump took office. These attacks include ongoing efforts to ban transgender soldiers from openly serving in the military, revoking non-discrimination protections for transgender youth at school, supporting religious exemptions that would lead to discrimination against LGBTQ people, and, most recently, attempting to erase transgender people’s identities by redefining and restricting the legal meaning of “sex” to sex assigned at birth.
