John Oliver, Author Stephen King Come for Racist, Homophobe Iowa Rep. Steve King (R-IA) – WATCH

John Oliver came after racist homophobe Rep. Steve King (R-IA) in a segment on Last Week Tonight Sunday night that also covered Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who is facing an indictment for misuse of campaign funds.

Said Oliver: “Things are very spicy in Iowa’s 4th, where Congressman Steve King who has a history of flirting with white nationalists has gotten into hot water for, among other things, meeting with an Austrian party founded by an SS officer in August, and when asked about that meeting, he did not take it well.”

Oliver then played a clip of King getting hysterical when a reporter at a recent conference asked him if he identifies as a white nationalist.

Added Oliver: “That is a spectacular wit when the question is simply ‘are you a white supremacist?’ People who aren’t white supremacists say no. Even people who are white supremacists know to say no. So, it takes a special mix of racism and stupid to f**k that one up.”

He concluded, “Even neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer has said, and I quote, ‘Steve King is basically an open white nationalist at this point.’”

Another person who’d like to see Steve King go is author Stephen King, who tweeted: “Iowans, for personal reasons I hope you’ll vote Steve King out. I’m tired of being confused with this racist dumbbell.”

The Des Moines Register reports: ‘Steve King’s challenger in Tuesday’s election, Democrat J.D. Scholten, has been riding a wave of national press and fundraising since the latest round of Steve King headlines. Scholten’s campaign reported raising $900,000 between Monday and Friday last week alone, enough for him to blanket the airwaves of the Fourth District with a biographical ad…A Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll of the district shows that on a generic ballot a Republican candidate leads a Democratic candidate by 4 percentage points. With the exception of a 2012 race against former Iowa first lady Christie Vilsack, King has won each of his other races by at least 22 percentage points.’

Debra Messing Slams NBC for Airing Racist Trump Ad: ‘I am Ashamed’

Debra Messing blasted NBC early Monday morning for airing a racist Trump ad.

Tweeted Messing: ‘To our @willandgrace fans—I want you to know that I am ashamed that my network aired this disgusting racist ad. It is the antithesis of everything I personally believe in, and what, I believe, our show is all about. @nbc

The NYT reported: ‘The 30-second prime-time ad stirred fear of a migrant caravan making its way through Mexico that is still hundreds of miles from the United States border. It tied Luis Bracamontes, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who was convicted of murdering two Sacramento sheriff’s deputies in 2014, to the thousands of migrants who are fleeing Central America, even though Mr. Bracamontes is not known to be associated with the caravan…It was a shorter version of an ad that the president shared on Twitter last week, which falsely claimed about Mr. Bracamontes that Democrats “let him into our country” and “let him stay.”’

HRC Global Welcomes Fellow from Vietnam

HRC Global Welcomes Fellow from Vietnam

Post submitted by Jay Gilliam, HRC Senior Global Programs Officer

Thu Le, the newest HRC Global Fellow, works at the Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment (iSEE) — a local human rights organization in Vietnam. As a Global Fellow, she is working alongside HRC staff in Washington, D.C. for the month of November. HRC sat down with Le to discuss Vietnam, her goals and the fight for LGBTQ rights.

What is it like to be an LGBTQ person in Vietnam?

I think Vietnamese LGBTQ people face some specific difficulties. First, we have a culture that encourages people to live for the whole community, which sometimes puts minorities at risk because  they are not often welcomed or discussed. I used to think that I was the only gay person in this world, since I couldn’t share it with anybody else in my community. Second, LGBTQ issues are often considered cultural and not political because awareness of human rights issues is still limited across Vietnam. Many think, “Okay, it’s your lifestyle,” instead of a right that should be protected.

How did you become an LGBTQ advocate?

I used to work in both the public and private sectors before realizing my desire to work in the non-profit sector. I admired the work of iSEE and what they have done for the LGBTQ movement in Vietnam, and I wanted to do my part. To promote LGBTQ rights in Vietnam, I do many things from organizing public events to presenting at meetings with policy makers.

What does iSEE do?

iSEE is a human rights organization fighting for the rights of many minority groups in Vietnam. Established in 2007, we have programs on LGBTQ issues, ethnic minorities, civil society and gender justice. We conduct research and then use that evidence as well as voices from these communities to advocate for equal rights.

How did you hear about HRC?

The first time I saw HRC’s logo was when I joined Hanoi Pride events, during my very first days in the LGBTQ movement. In fact, HRC sponsored that event! My colleagues also talked to me about HRC, and I’ve been subscribing to their emails for two years.

What are you most looking forward to as an HRC Global Fellow?

During my time at HRC, I’m excited to meet and talk with a lot of people who can generously share their knowledge, experiences and insights into the advocacy for equality. I know that when I finish my fellowship, I will return to Vietnam with more ideas, skills and confidence.

HRC’s Global Fellows Program brings established and emerging LGBTQ leaders to the nation’s capital for professional development opportunities to build leadership capacity. For more information about HRC’s work around the world, check out HRC.org/Global.

Conservative D.C. Newspaper Tweets ‘Trump is Going to Hell’

Conservative D.C. Newspaper Tweets ‘Trump is Going to Hell’

The Washington Examiner tweeted then deleted an interesting tweet on Monday morning.

Said the tweet: “Trump is going to hell. Anyone who ever read the bible can tell you where it stands on rich adulterers. The key to God’s forgiveness is repentance. Trump’s entire political career has been about the exact opposite of that. Also this paper is garbage for promoting ‘Trump and God.’”

The paper later said they were hacked.

The Washington Examiner’s Twitter feed was hacked and a tweet was posted that did not come from our staff. We are taking appropriate action and will issue a further statement if necessary.

The woes of aging

The woes of aging

Julie Bracken posted a photo:

The woes of aging

When I was in my younger days,
I weighed a few pounds less,
I needn’t hold my tummy in
To wear a belted dress.

But now that I am older,
I’ve set my body free;
There’s comfort of elastic
Where once my waist would be.

Inventor of those high-heeled shoes
My feet have not forgiven;
I have to wear a nine now,
But used to wear a seven.

And how about those pantyhose-
They’re sized by weight, you see,
So how come when I put them on
The crotch is at my knees?

I need to wear these glasses
As the prints were getting smaller;
And it wasn’t very long ago
I know that I was taller.

Though my hair has turned to grey
And my skin no longer fits,
On the inside, I’m the same old me,
Just the outside’s changed a bit.
