Attacking LGBTQ People is Bad for Nevada and a Losing Political Strategy

HRC responded to ads from a new unregistered group called “Nevada Parents for Safe Schools,” that demonize transgender people and attack gubernatorial candidate Steve Sisolak for his support of LGBTQ equality.

“These ads are egregious, hateful and not representative of who we are as a state,” said HRC Nevada State Director Briana Escamilla. “Time and time again, in races across the country, we’ve seen that hate is a losing political strategy, yet far right, sham organizations continue to latch on to LGBTQ discrimination and demonize the transgender community to stir up votes. It won’t work. Nevada voters overwhelmingly support LGBTQ equality and won’t stand for these false attacks and smear campaigns against their friends, family and neighbors. We’re on the ground working harder than ever to ensure that Nevada voters — including the state’s more than 600,000 Equality Voters — turn out on November 6 to reject the politics of hate and fear, and elect pro-equality champions like Steve Sisolak, who will defend LGBTQ equality and fight for a Nevada that we can all be proud of.”

In Nevada, HRC has identified more than 600,000 “Equality Voters” — voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Nevada in the 2018 cycle, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state.

Univision’s ‘El Gordo y La Flaca’ talk show airs anti-transgender comments after death of Mexican trans woman and sparks protests

Univision’s ‘El Gordo y La Flaca’ talk show airs anti-transgender comments after death of Mexican trans woman and sparks protests

Angela Ponce will compete in Miss Universe this December representing Spain, and she happens to be transgender. Many pageant participants and organizers have been supportive, but those opposed to trans inclusion had the spotlight last week, including Lupita Jones, director of Miss Universe in Mexico and herself a former Miss Universe. Jones was widely quoted in Spanish-language media saying trans women should not compete, which prompted a trans activist in Mexico, Itzel Ávila, to create a video in response. Ávila died, reportedly by suicide, shortly after posting the video.

Coverage of Ávila’s death and of Jones’ comments have shone a glaring light on the lack of knowledge on the part of way too many media outlets on what it means to be transgender, on the differences between sexual orientation and gender identity, on which pronouns to use, and on a host of other issues.

One show, El Gordo y la Flaca, drew particular ire from trans community members. The segment aired with a caption that read, “un transexual se suicida” or “a transsexual committed suicide” and the reporter also misgendered Ávila by using the incorrect pronouns to refer to her. After the news segment ended, hosts Raúl de Molina and Lili Estefan went on to misgender Ávila. “If this man or woman, or however you want to call them, killed themselves …,” De Molina said. Later, Estefan also misgendered Ávila and said, “the transgenders now want to be part of this,” among other problematic comments about gender and legal change of documents. In the same segment, De Molina and Estefan mentioned, with affection, a deceased former member of their cast, Cachita, who was transgender. Despite years of working with Cachita, issues around gender identity and the correct use of pronouns to refer to other trans women seemed to utterly confound them.

A number of New York City trans community members and groups quickly mobilized and organized a protest on Friday outside Times Square where the show was taping. Activists Elizabeth Chávez and Liaam Winslet helped organize a protest and Chávez confronted De Molina after the host stepped out to interview them. De Molina denied part of his statements but then said he apologized if he had said “man or woman.” De Molina and Estefan mentioned the protests on Monday’s show.

GLAAD has reached out to Univision about trainings for the show and other staff members to ensure LGBTQ issues are addressed accurately on air.

Unfortunately, this was not the only show to misgender Ávila or to use incorrect terminology. Ventaneando, on Azteca TV, which has an openly gay cast member, did so as well. In addition to misgendering and a lack of understanding of trans issues, sadly many stories focused almost entirely on Jones rather than on Ávila. Some news and entertainment segments offered more thoughtful coverage and commentary, but many  missed an important opportunity to discuss suicide, depression, lack of job opportunities, discrimination and the many other issues that disproportionately affect transgender people in the United States and internationally, especially if they are also people of color.

In 2012, GLAAD worked to ensure the inclusion of trans woman in Miss Universe.

GLAAD’s vital reporting guide, Doubly Victimized: Reporting on Transgender Victims of Crime, provides clear guidelines to ensure that transgender victims of violent crimes are treated respectfully and fairly. GLAAD’s new report More Than a Number: Shifting the Media Narrative on Transgender Homicides, is an advanced reporting guide for journalists and advocates to accompany our Doubly Victimized Guide.

Jones’ comments were preceded by those of Miss Colombia, Valeria Morales, who told media she did not think trans women should not be allowed to participate in the contest. Morales’ comments prompted Omar Vasquez, a YouTuber, to post a brilliant take-down titled “Miss Colombia or Miss Transphobia?” Miss Universe takes place Dec. 17 and will also include a trans contestant from Mongolia.

Netflix’s new “Tales of the City” will bring us diverse queer and trans stories in 2019

Netflix’s new “Tales of the City” will bring us diverse queer and trans stories in 2019

Today Netflix announced even more queer talent involved with the upcoming series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, including Murray Bartlett (Looking), Jen Richards (Mrs. FletcherHer Story), Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman), and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Caldwell Tidicue aka Bob the Drag Queen. They join previously announced out actress Ellen Page and a host of LGBTQ newcomers. Showrunner, Executive Producer, and writer Lauren Morelli and Producing Director, Executive Producer Alan Poul, who are both part of the LGBTQ community, have assembled an entirely queer writing team and brought in several queer directors for the 10-episode series.

Armistead Maupin’s much-beloved novel, Tales of the City, first came to television on PBS in January, 1994. Set in Mrs. Madrigal’s bohemian San Francisco home at 28 Barbary Lane, the series centered LGBTQ stories and characters in a way that was completely unheard of for the time. (Showtime’s Queer as Folk didn’t premiere until December, 2000.) Tales of the City won a Peabody Award, garnered multiple Emmy nominations, and received a GLAAD Media Award. But anti-LGBTQ activists mobilized against it, sending a 12-minute clip reel to conservative members of Congress and creating a flyer that said “Your Tax Dollars Used to Air Pornographic, Profane, Homosexual TV Series.” PBS caved to anti-LGBTQ pressure, backing out of its commitment to fund and air the sequels. Thankfully Showtime stepped in and aired More Tales of the Cityand Further Tales of the City in 1998 and 2001.

The new Netflix series is inspired by the Maupin novels, but will bring us entirely new stories set in present-day San Francisco. Netflix already announced that queer fave Ellen Page will be playing Shawna, the estranged daughter of Mary Ann Singleton, played once again by the brilliant Laura Linney. They will be joined by other cast members from the original series including Olympia Dukakis returning as transgender landlady, Anna Madrigal, and Barbara Garrick who plays heiress DeDe Halycon Day.

Today, Netflix announced that Murray Bartlett, a fave from HBO’s Looking, will be playing Michael “Mouse” Tolliver, and that Chicago Fire‘s Charlie Barnett will be playing his (much younger) boyfriend, Ben.

Among the new residents living at Barbary Lane, Josiah Victoria Garcia will be playing Jake Rodriguez, a character first introduced in Maupin’s 2007 novel Michael Tolliver Lives. Jake is a transgender man and a caregiver for Anna Madrigal. May Hong will play Jake’s long-term girlfriend, Margot Park.

Recurring queer characters will include Jen Richards (Mrs. Fletcher, Her Story) playing a young Anna Madrigal; Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman) as Ysela, a trans woman who plays a pivotal role in Anna’s life; Caldwell Tidicue aka Bob the Drag Queen as Ida Best the manager of a burlesque club where Shawna and Margot work; Matthew Risch (LookingModern Family) as Mouse’s ex-boyfriend Harrison; Dickie Hearts (Grace & Frankie) playing Mateo, DeDe’s housekeeper; Benjamin Thys (The Meyerowitz Stories) and Samantha Soule (Godless) as a queer polyamorous married couple; and Juan Castano (The OA) as Flaco Ramirez, one of Ben’s co-workers.

The all-queer writing team that Morelli and Poul assembled is comprised of Andy Parker, Patricia Resnick, Marcus Gardley, Jen Silverman, Hansol Jung, and Thomas Page McBee; while the directors who are part of the LGBTQ community including Silas Howard, Sydney Freeland, Stacie Passon and Kyle Alvarez.

Since the series features two prominent trans characters, Morelli and Poul included trans creators behind-the-scenes to help tell their stories. Trans people involved in the production include Josiah Victoria Garcia, a non-binary trans actor who uses they/them pronouns and the name Garcia in daily life; Jen Richards, a trans woman who starred in and was a writer and producer on the Emmy-nominated web series Her Story, about dating as a trans woman; Daniela Vega, a trans woman and the star of the Academy Award-winning film A Fantastic Woman; writer Thomas Page McBee; and directors Silas Howard and Sydney Freeland.

Netflix also announced that Paul Gross (Due SouthSlings & Arrows) will be returning to reprise his role as Brian, Mary Ann Singleton’s ex-husband. He will be joined by newcomers Michelle Buteau (First Wives Club) as Wren, Brian’s no-nonsense best friend; Ashley Park (Broadway’s Mean Girls) and Christopher Larkin (The 100) as twins Ani and Raven who are newer residents of Barbary Lane, and Michael Park (Dear Evan Hansen) as Mary Ann’s husband Robert.

When it premieres next year, this diverse LGBTQ cast and creative team will bring new queer and trans stories to 28 Barbary Lane, and introduce younger generations of LGBTQ people to Michael Tolliver, Anna Madrigal, and Mary Ann Singleton. Is it 2019 yet?

Saudi Arabia Will Say Journalist Jamal Khashoggi Was Killed During Interrogation: REPORT

Saudi Arabia Will Say Journalist Jamal Khashoggi Was Killed During Interrogation: REPORT

Saudi officials are preparing to say that Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi died inside their embassy during an interrogation gone wrong. The report comes as the Saudi explanation for Khashoggi’s disappearance began to crumble under international incredulity. They had previously said they had no idea where he was.

CBS News reports: “The officials told CBS News reporter Kylie Atwood that the Saudi government was expected to claim a mission was approved by King Salman’s son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (often referred to as MBS), to interrogate Khashoggi, but not kill him. They will say, according to Atwood’s sources, that the journalist died as the result of an interrogation by Saudi operatives that went wrong.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo paid a visit to Saudi officials today in Riyadh: ‘Pompeo had a short discussion with King Salman before a scheduled meeting later in the day with the King’s son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler. US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo “thanked the King for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation” of the Khashoggi case. There was no public mention of any new Saudi explanation of Khashoggi’s disappearance. CNN’s sources say Saudi Arabia will contend that the Washington Post columnist died when an interrogation went awry.’

New: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s meeting with King Salman of Saudi Arabia lasted no more than 15 minutes, CNN estimates based on the time the top U.S. diplomat’s motorcade arrived at the royal court and departed. #Khashoggi
