Shawn Mendes and Teddy Geiger Cover Queen’s ‘Under Pressure’ — LISTEN
Shawn Mendes and Teddy <3 (aka Teddy Geiger) have covered Queen’s “Under Pressure” for the soundtrack of the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Proceeds from the track will go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust in the fight against HIV/AIDS, according to Mendes.
Teddy is a longtime collaborator with Mendes, who spoke in May about her transition and how it influenced him: “I can’t express how happy that made me. And it’s something I really love to say: it’s a very new thing, right? People transitioning, there are still a lot of people who don’t understand it, and to refer to somebody as a pronoun that you haven’t been referring to them as their entire life, your entire life, is very difficult. But the thing that’s amazing is that I remember the day I said ‘she,’ and it wasn’t because I said it consciously, it was because I said it without thinking, basically just in conversation. I didn’t realize I did it, but she looked at me and she had the most incredible look in her eyes. If every person in the world had one of their best friends look at them that way, and express that much joy in what it meant for her to be referred to as the pronoun she is, there would no longer be an argument [over trans rights]. People would just understand. It’s so powerful to have somebody you’re so close to go through something like that. It’s just f–g beautiful, man. I really wish you could have seen it.”

Gay Romance Blooms Atop a Baby Grand in New Musical ‘Midnight at the Never Get’ — REVIEW
While “radical” fairies and cross-dressers were rioting for their lives at Stonewall, a crooner and his composer beau were performing in the style of Cole Porter for a more refined crowd. Their act of civil rebellion? Using pronouns true to their gay romance. There’s no throwing punches in Midnight at the Never Get, a charming if uneventful cabaret-style musical that opened off-Broadway tonight. Though it may have been easier to feel sympathy for these fellas if they had more skin in the game.
The face of this two-man band lacks much conviction to join the fight, smitten as he is with his pianist (Jeremy Cohen). Sam Bolen, who co-conceived the new musical with writer-composer Mark Sonnenblick, narrates the story with remarkable stamina and a honeyed voice. Though for the better part of this 90-minute show, being in love seems to be his character’s only trait — until losing that love takes over.
What little conflict arises in the meantime has to do with his lover’s severe fixation on respectability — setting himself apart from downtown queer riffraff inside his vintage tux. Of course, both characters already enjoy every advantage of being white men with means, a privilege briefly acknowledged but hardly interrogated here. There’s not much sting to the adversity they do face, which only highlights the unseen cruelties that fell upon many others less fortunate. History has tended to focus on the latter for good reason. Heartbreak is a drag, but there are worse things.
The many ways to say ‘I love you’ drive Sonnenblick’s loungey jazz score, inspired by the American Songbook and orchestrated by a top-notch onstage band. One particularly clever number turns the frequent nuisance of police raids into an upbeat ode called “My Boy in Blue,” with wry asides like, “I don’t know I just him so… arresting.” Max Friedman directs the York Theatre Company production tucked into the lower level of Saint Peter’s Church, a setting that ultimately lends the story’s celestial bent an uncanny resonance.
What happens when you realize “your whole life was just a rehearsal for your memory”? At its most profound, Sonnenblick’s musical explores the penumbras suggested by its title, which refers to the time and location of the duo’s act: midnight, the tipping point between one day and the next, and a bar called the Never Get, an allusion to perpetual unfulfillment. Every experience is always in the process of turning the corner into memory. Including, and perhaps most indelibly, the kind of love that makes you sing.

20 Years After Matthew Shepard’s Brutal Murder, LGBTQ People Are Still Facing Epidemic of Violence
Today, HRC joins the nation in remembering the death of Matthew Shepard 20 years ago today and calls on policymakers at all levels to act with urgency in addressing the ongoing epidemic of anti-LGBTQ violence. While significant progress has been made to expand protections and support for victims of hate-motivated crime, too many in the LGBTQ community, particularly transgender women of color, are targeted with violence.
Matthew Shepard was brutally attacked in Laramie, Wyoming, in an anti-LGBTQ hate crime on October 6, 1998, and died from his injuries six days later. Just months before Matthew was murdered, James Byrd, Jr., a Black man, was beaten by a group of white supremacists, tied to the back of a pickup truck and dragged three miles before dying. After their murders, both families became tireless advocates for a federal hate crimes law. Their work led to the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Action (HCPA) in 2009.
“The world will never forget Matthew Shepard,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Twenty years after his horrific murder galvanized the nation to confront hate violence, ultimately leading to federal protections which bear his name along with James Byrd, Jr., we are still fighting the same hate and bigotry that continues to fuel anti-LGBTQ violence, particularly against transgender women of color. It’s vital that lawmakers at all levels act with urgency in addressing this crisis. By honoring Matthew and the Shepard family with action, we can help create a world where no LGBTQ person lives in fear.”
“As we reflect on the last two decades of work in honor of our son Matt, we still grieve, but are thankful to partners like HRC for amplifying our voices,” said Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard, President of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and a member of the HRC Foundation Board. “The work that we have coalesced around, catalyzed by our son’s death, has changed the lives of so many in our country, and we are thankful for that. This work gives our lives meaning and reminds us that while he may not physically still be with us, Matt is absolutely present. May we all continue to remember him and continue working towards erasing hate in his name and in the name of all those who have lost their lives to hate violence.”
The Anti-Violence Project reported an 86 percent increase in hate violence-related homicides of LGBTQ people between 2016 and 2017. Last year was also the deadliest year on record for the transgender community with at least 29 transgender people — mostly Black transgender women — killed. So far in 2018, there are reports of at least 21 transgender people who have been killed.
Currently, 32 states lack statutes that include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristic under state hate crimes prevention laws. Not only is further progress needed in state legislatures, it’s essential that Congress take action to ensure that training and data-collection around all hate crimes is mandatory, not voluntary.
