Senate Judiciary Committee Advances Kavanaugh to Floor Vote After Stunning Call from Jeff Flake for FBI Investigation: WATCH

The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the full Senate on Friday afternoon after Republican Senator Jeff Flake stunned the chamber by calling for a weeklong FBI investigations of the sexual assault allegations against him. Flake earlier on Friday said he would vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Said Flake: “I think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week, in order to let the FBI do an investigation, limited in time and scope to the current allegations that are there.”

The Hill reports: ‘It’s still not clear whether Kavanaugh can get to at least 50 votes on the Senate floor, which would allow Vice President Pence to break a tie and confirm him to the Supreme Court. GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) remain undecided. Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) are undecided on the Democratic side after Sen. Joe Donnelly (Ind.), another Democrat up for reelection in November in a red state, said he would vote “no” on Kavanaugh.’

HRC Foundation Announces 2018 Chefs for Equality Lineup of Top Chefs & Mixologists

HRC Foundation Announces 2018 Chefs for Equality Lineup of Top Chefs & Mixologists

For the seventh consecutive year, HRC Foundation and prominent food writer David Hagedorn with Christopher Vazquez and Rick Davis of Amaryllis Floral + Event Design are bringing together the capital region’s top culinary talent for Chefs for Equality, Washington, D.C.’s premier food event. The evening of food, cocktails, and music to benefit the fight for full LGBTQ equality will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 for the first time at the Washington National Cathedral — a beacon for equality throughout the Washington, D.C. area. In addition to the impressive fare, live and silent auctions benefiting the HRC Foundation will be held.

“Chefs for Equality is an opportunity for the D.C. culinary community to come together to enjoy incredible food and drinks while re-dedicating ourselves to the fight for full LGBTQ equality,” said David Hagedorn, food writer and Chefs for Equality Co-Chair. “This year’s theme, Deliciously Defiant, encourages attendees to resist the hateful policies and rhetoric of Trump-Pence Administration, which threatens freedom, especially that of LGBTQ people, women, people of color, immigrants and others daily. It makes the work done by the HRC Foundation — and the funds raised at this event — all the more critical.”

The jewels of the Chefs for Equality crown are the 11 personal chef tables — an opportunity to dine with celebrity chefs for a lavish five-course meal right in the middle of the action during the event. Celebrity chef groupings for these tables can be found here.

The centerpiece table seats 16 guests, matched with Washington’s most celebrated fine dining chefs, including Amy Brandwein, Centrolina; Caitlin Dysart, Centrolina; Kevin Tien, Himitsu; Robert Wiedmaier, Marcel’s; Gerald Addison, Maydan and Compass Rose; and Christopher Morgan, Maydan and Compass Rose.

As they have for the previous six years, Christopher Vazquez and Rick Davis of Amaryllis Floral + Event Design will transform the Chefs for Equality venue into a wonderland, while serving as two of the event’s premier sponsors.

Chefs for Equality will also once again feature the “5/10/15 Speed Diner,” — 5 dishes/10 chefs/15 minutes — curated by chef Erik Bruner-Yang and supported by Gauri Sarin of the Streetsense Eat+Drink Team, with a specialty cocktail prepared by mixologist impresario Adam Bernbach of Estadio. For $50, Chefs for Equality ticket holders can purchase a 15-minute time slot for a seat at a 20-person diner-style counter, created by Amaryllis Floral + Event Design. Once seated, each guest has 15 minutes to enjoy a specialty cocktail and a mini five-course tasting menu prepared and served by five pairs of celebrity chefs. Slots are available at 6:30, 7, 7:30 and 8 o’clock. To buy seats at the counter, email [email protected]. (Tickets for Chefs for Equality must first also be purchased).

All proceeds will benefit the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s nationwide educational work for LGBTQ equality. The HRC Foundation works to educate the public and provides training and model policies that alter the fundamental nature of the institutions governing the everyday lives of LGBTQ people everythwere. The HRC Foundation touches every aspect of LGBTQ life with programs that target our most sensitive and vulnerable interactions: helping with equal access to adoption and foster care; creating respectful and supportive school environments; helping healthcare providers increase LGBTQ competency; engaging in dialogue around LGBTQ equality in faith communities; helping corporate America adopt inclusive workplace policies and practices; and leveraging our domestic work to have an international impact. The critical work of the HRC Foundation enhances the lived experiences of LGBTQ people and their families by changing hearts and minds across the country and beyond.

Tickets for Chefs for Equality can be purchased at hrc.im/ChefsTickets. The full list of participating chefs, pastry chefs, bakers, and mixologists can be found at ChefsForEquality.org.

Transgender Hijra dancing at the Khajuraho temples site in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Hijras are officially recognized as third gender in South Asian countries, being considered neither completely male nor female. Hijras have a recorded history in the Indian subcontinent from antiquity onwards as suggested by the Kama Sutra period.

Many hijras live in well-defined and organised all-hijra communities, led by a guru. These communities have consisted over generations of those who are in abject poverty, rejected by, or flee, their family of origin. Many work as sex workers for survival.

HRC Endorses Sarah Godlewski for Wisconsin State Treasurer

HRC Endorses Sarah Godlewski for Wisconsin State Treasurer

HRC announced its endorsement of Sarah Godlewski for Wisconsin State Treasurer.

“Sarah Godlewski is an incredible advocate for Wisconsin’s working families who will use the office of state treasurer to ensure that everyone — including LGBTQ Wisconsinites — is equally protected under state law,” said Wisconsin State Director Wendy Strout. “We are proud to endorse her candidacy and look forward to mobilizing our thousands of members and supporters across the Badger State to turn out for equality in November.”

“I’m honored to accept the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign,” said Godlewski. “As Treasurer, I’ll stand up for all Wisconsin people, from working to prohibit lending discrimination against LGBT Wisconsinites to bringing fiscal accountability back to Madison.”

A native Wisconsinite and longtime business owner, Godlewski is passionate about public service and improving the lives of Wisconsin’s working families. She is a champion for the LGBTQ community, who will use the treasurer’s office to move equality forward. As the next Wisconsin State Treasurer, she is committed to ensuring that transgender people are protected from discrimination when applying for loans and refinancing, and increasing transparency and accountability around organizations that support and fund the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy” with taxpayer dollars.

In Wisconsin, HRC has identified more than half a million “Equality Voters” — voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Wisconsin in the 2018 cycle, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC (www.hrc.org) and authorized by Sarah for Wisconsin.

WE BELIEVE DR. BLASEY FORD. THE WHITE HOUSE MUST WITHDRAW KAVANAUGH, OR THE SENATE MUST REJECT: “Dr. Christine Blasey Ford has bravely come forward, delivered credible and compelling testimony about her sexual assault, and has provided significant detail that would allow the Senate Judiciary Committee to corroborate her allegations. Despite this, Donald Trump, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have refused to fully investigate her claims or halt the proceedings to gather more information… This is unacceptable,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “In light of what we have heard, and Senator Grassley’s refusal to pursue an FBI investigation, the Trump-Pence Administration must withdraw Kavanaugh’s nomination immediately. If they do not, members of the Senate must oppose and vote against his confirmation.” More from HRC.

  • The American Bar Association (ABA) has called for a delay in the consideration of Kavanaugh until an FBI investigation is completed. More from CNN.
  • Today at noon, HRC will join our partners and stand in solidarity with sexual assault survivors everywhere.

Join @HRC & our partners as we stand in solidarity w/ sexual assault survivors everywhere & send a clear message that we will not be silenced. TOMORROW AT NOON, make your voices heard & demand the Senate vote NO on Kavanaugh.

FIRED UP FRIDAY — THE CREATOR OF THE TRANS FLAG HAS A MESSAGE FOR ALL… VOTE!

WE MUST ADDRESS THE EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE AGAINST TRANS PEOPLE — 21 AMERICANS KILLED THIS YEAR: Last week, Nikki Enriquez, a 28-year-old Latinx transgender woman who lived in Laredo, Texas, was allegedly killed by an intel supervisor for the U.S. Border Patrol. Alarmingly, Enriquez’s death is the fifth known killing of a trans woman of color in the last three weeks alone. It also marks the 21st known killing of a transgender or gender-expansive person in 2018. More from USA Today.

HRC ENDORSES TONY EVERS FOR WISCONSIN GOVERNOR: “HRC is proud to endorse Tony Evers for Governor of Wisconsin,” said HRC Wisconsin State Director Wendy Strout. “After seven years of Scott Walker’s attacks on our community, it’s more important than ever we elect a pro-equality governor who will fight day in and day out to uphold the Wisconsin values of fairness, justice and equality. Superintendent Evers has been a tireless ally for LGBTQ Wisconsinites, and he will be a vital voice for the community and all Wisconsinites in the Governor’s mansion.” More from HRC and Wisconsin Gazette.

ANTI-LGBTQ EXTREMISTS CONTINUE TO POUR MONEY INTO CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT THE FIRST OPENLY LESBIAN SENATOR IN U.S. HISTORY: Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-LGBTQ and anti-reproductive health care group, held a fundraiser for Leah Vukmir, who is running against champion for equality Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). Vukmir has derailed efforts to pass common-sense protections for the LGBTQ community, including for LGBTQ youth facing discrimination and bullying at school. She has consistently voted against pro-equality legislation and has pushed for a license to discriminate in the health care system that would prioritize  physicians’ beliefs over life-saving patient care. More from Washington Blade.

TRANS RIGHTS ARE ON THE BALLOT IN MASSACHUSETTS: On Nov. 6, Massachusetts voters will decide the fate of a non-discrimination law that protects transgender people in public spaces. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed the non-discrimination bill into law in July 2016, and it went into effect in October 2016. Opponents of equality used anti-transgender tactics and messages to get Question 3, which would repeal these non-discrimination protections, on the ballot this election. More from Boston.com.

WOMEN’S SHELTER SUES CITY OF ANCHORAGE FOR RIGHT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST TRANSGENDER WOMEN: In April, voters soundly rejected Proposition 1 — a dangerous ballot measure that sought to eliminate existing municipal non-discrimination protections for transgender people. More from Metro Weekly.
