GLAAD celebrates LGBTQ-inclusive wins at the 70th Annual Emmy Awards
The 70th Annual Emmy Awards are taking place tonight at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles and GLAAD will be updating you in real-time throughout the night with news about all of the LGBTQ-inclusive winners.
The opening number for the show was a tongue-in-cheek nod to the need for more diversity in television, and included queer actors (and nominees) Kate McKinnon, Tituss Burgess, and Ricky Martin, as well as RuPaul Charles, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys.
Ryan Murphy received the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for his work on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Murphy thanked all those working on the show, with a special shout out to the women in his life. Another huge win for Versace was Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, which was awarded to Darren Criss for playing the role of Andrew Cunanan.
Merritt Wever won the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, for playing the queer role of Mary Agnes on GLAAD Media Award-nominated series Godless.
Out talent scheduled to present include Hannah Gadsby, Abbi Jacobson, Kate McKinnon, Sarah Paulson, RuPaul, and the cast of Queer Eye.
Last weekend, several awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys and included several LGBTQ victories. History was made when out trans filmmaker Yance Ford took home the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking trophy for his Netflix documentary Strong Island. Out actress and Vito Russo Award recipient, Samira Wiley, won for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama series, for playing lesbian character Moira on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, while Ron Cephas Jones won Outstanding Guest Actor in a drama for playing bisexual character William on This Is Us.
Netflix’s hit reality reboot Queer Eye took home the prize for Outstanding Structured Reality Series, as well as Casting and Picture Editing for a Structured or Competition Reality Program. RuPaul’s Drag Race took home four Emmys, including Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for RuPaul.
Stay tuned for more updates throughout the evening!
