Brett Kavanaugh Defended a Group that Inhumanely Treated Prisoners with HIV & AIDS

It has recently been reported that while in private practice Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh defended a company accused failing to provide adequate care to Alabama prison inmates living with HIV, according to a recent report from American Ledger. The report noted that the prison withheld life-saving treatment for prisoners, prescribing less effective, cheaper drugs despite the availability of more advanced drugs.

HRC’s Government Affairs Director David Stacy said that this further emphasizes the need for the U.S. Senate to reject Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“We recognize that while in private practice attorneys are tasked with representing their client.  However, we also recognize that attorneys do exercise some control in the cases they select. Kavanaugh’s apparent willingness to lend his expertise to a company accused of deliberately depriving prisoners living with HIV of necessary, available treatment reveals a troubling set of values.  This decision solidifies our concern that Judge Kavanaugh does not share Justice Kennedy’s belief in the shared humanity and equality dignity of all people, including those living with HIV. Stacy said. “The American people deserve a fair-minded jurist. The Senate needs to reject this nomination.”

HIV disproportionately impacts segments of the LGBTQ community and Kavanaugh’s overall record indicates he would rule against LGBTQ progress.

There’s still time to urge your senators to vote NO on Kavanaugh’s nomination. Text SAVE SCOTUS to 30644 to ask your senator to stop Kavanaugh.

FAKE RANCHER OF THE DAY. Democratic Senator Jon Tester comes for the cred of his GOP challenger Matt Rosendale.

FEAR. Bob Woodward book breaks sales record: ‘Bob Woodward’s in-depth and unflattering look at President Donald Trump’s White House just broke a 94-year sales record. The celebrated Watergate reporter’s new book, “Fear: Trump in the White House,” boasted higher pre-order sales than any other title in the history of its publisher, Simon & Schuster, the company said Wednesday. The tell-all book, released Sept. 11, sold more than 750,000 copies in its first day on sale, according to a press release from the company.’

ROYAL MYSTERY. Does Meghan Markle pick up dog poop?

MANAFORT PLEA DEAL. Giuliani claims Trump sees no danger in it: “We can see a reason why he might want to do that. What’s the need for another trial?” Giuliani said in an interview late Wednesday. “They’ve got enough to put him in jail. His lawyer is going to argue they shouldn’t. The judge should decide this. Not Mueller. I think it’s pretty clear if they were going to get anything from him they’d have gotten it already. What’s the point of further harassing him?”

TRANSGENDER PASSPORTS. State Department makes ominous change to website: ‘In its place is a new website—entitled “Sex Designation Change”—that uses the outmoded term “sex change” rather than “gender transition,” goes out of its way to highlight the exclusion of non-binary people, and removes links to major medical associations that support transition-related health care. What doesn’t appear to have changed is the substance of the policy: Transgender people can still change the gender markers on their passports without surgery. Which begs the question: Why mess with the website?

CARDINAL DOLAN. Gay priests are not the “sole root” of the church’s sexual abuse crisis.

NY Archbishop Cardinal Dolan tells @camanpour that gay priests are not the sole root of the issue when it comes to sex abuse in the church: “This isn’t about gay or straight. This is about right and wrong … you don’t abuse a minor. You don’t do that” t.co/MHOmqguVr8 pic.twitter.com/AlThI8Wh1J

TRIPLED IN SIZE. Trump administration will triple the size of its child prison camp.

LAST EVER PRESIDENT. Michael Moore talks to Chris Hayes: “I think that we have someone in the White House who has no respect for the rule of law, who dislikes democracy by an incredible degree, which doesn’t make him really any that much different from other billionaires or CEOs because their businesses are not democracies. They rule by fiat. They decide, they make the calls and they don’t like anybody else having a say. They also like to take home the bulk of the money, with them. So this is — putting somebody like that in charge of a democracy is a very dangerous thing, and especially, it’s more dangerous with him because he has a complete lack of ideology.”

SEPTEMBER 20. Vote on Brett Kavanaugh scheduled: “Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley set up a final committee vote for President Donald Trump’s high court pick for a Sept. 20 panel vote. The full Senate will vote on Kavanaugh shortly after, as soon as the last week of September.Senate Democrats tried to delay committee business in a last-ditch bid to stall the Supreme Court nominee, but Grassley seized control of the committee upon its opening and immediately moved to tee up a vote on Kavanaugh next week.”

HENRY CAVILL. Cryptic Superman video.

RUSSIA. Pussy Riot activist treated for possible poisoning: “Ekho Moskvy radio and online news portal Meduza reported Wednesday that Pyotr Verzilov has been in emergency care since late Tuesday. They quoted a fellow Pussy Riot member, Veronika Nikulshina, as saying Verzilov’s symptoms included losing his eyesight and ability to speak.”

TEL AVIV. The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 city!

BURIED BEEF OF THE DAY. Christina Aguilera said she’d do a duet with Britney Spears.

TRAILER OF THE DAY. Amazon Prime’s The Romanoffs, from the creator of Mad Men.

THIRSTY THURSDAY. Rakeem.

In Massachusetts, Transgender Rights Are at Stake on Election Day

In Massachusetts, Transgender Rights Are at Stake on Election Day

For Nicole Talbot, a 16-year-old transgender teen in Massachusetts, a “no” vote on Question 3 in the state’s ballot would mean she loses vital non-discrimination protections in the Bay State.

With Sunday marking 50 days until the midterm election, it’s important to remember that a lot is at stake for transgender rights. On Nov. 6, Massachusetts voters will decide the fate of a non-discrimination law that protects transgender people in public spaces.

“The law isn’t giving me rights. I had rights before the law existed. It’s just now it’s protecting them, and it’s saying to people you can’t take rights away from me just because you don’t agree with who I am,” Talbot said in an exclusive HRC video. “It’s about me having the right to a restaurant, go shopping, get a coffee – the day-to day life things.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed the non-discrimination bill into law in July 2016, and it went into effect in October 2016. Since then, opponents of equality used anti-transgender tactics and messages to get Question 3, which would repeal these non-discrimination protections, on the ballot this election.

Anti-equality extremists have sought to scare Massachusetts voters into becoming the first state in the nation to repeal these critical protections, invoking in their campaign a disengous myth around safety in restrooms.

A new study from the Williams Institute of UCLA, however, disputed anti-LGBTQ activists’ false, anti-transgender arguments.

Using crime data from areas where accommodation laws are exist compared to where they do not, the study notes that “results showed that immediately after the laws’ passage, there were fewer incidents of privacy and safety violations in places with gender-identity inclusive public accommodations laws than in comparable areas without the laws.”

Talbot said she thinks the best way to ensure Bay Staters affirm transgender equality and fairness is to talk with people in your communities and spread awareness about the importance of the law and why people must vote YES on 3.

“I am nervous that the laws will be taken away and my protections will be taken away, but that does not mean that we can’t fight,” Talbot said.

Echoing this sentiment was Mimi Lemay, a member of HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council, which is a coalition of the nation’s leading parent-advocates working for equality and fairness for transgender people.

Lemay’s 8-year-old son, Jacob, is among many transgender youth at risk of losing vital protections in Massachusetts if the state’s non-discrimination law is repealed. In an HRC and Freedom for All Massachusetts video, Lemay talked about what it would mean to her family if the law is repealed.

HRC calls on Equality Voters to vote YES on 3 and preserve the dignity and respect for transgender Bay Staters like Nicole, Jacob and many others this November. Learn more about the #YesOn3 campaign here

George Takei tells the story of GLAAD Media Institute alumni giving “Free Mom Hugs”

George Takei tells the story of GLAAD Media Institute alumni giving “Free Mom Hugs”

Actor, LGBTQ advocate, and GLAAD Media Award honoree, George Takei, has shared the story of Sara and Parker Cunningham. The mother and son duo participated in the GLAAD Media Institute course in Oklahoma City in March, hosted and co-sponsored by Freedom Oklahoma. Since then, Sara and her organization, Free Mom Hugs, have been getting significant media attention for her support of LGBTQ people who have faced family rejection.

Look at how Takei tells the story:

Sara and Parker were highly engaged in the GLAAD Media Institute course, according to trainer Scott Turner Schofield. “They came to learn how to represent Free Mom Hugs as best they could, to really promote its mission. They even took me out for dinner and grilled me for more, and I did a whole extra how-to-interview session with them because they were so hungry for what we do.”

Free Mom HugsSince their time attending Engagement 101: Media & Messaging Tools for Today’s Activist, the mother and son team have out the training to great use, and it’s paying off. Sarah went viral for her offer to stand in as a parent for LGBTQ people getting married, who have been rejected by family. Their story was featured in The Independent, CBS News, BuzzFeed, and outlets in France and Germany.

Her outpouring of love has even inspired similar actions in Austin, TX, and is becoming the subject of a documentary titled “Mama Bears.”

Sara and Parker are just two examples of GLAAD Media Institute alumni who are accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ community. Join them by attending a GLAAD Media Institute course or workshop near you. Check out glaad.org/institute to learn more.
