Tadd Fujikawa Makes History as First Male Professional Golfer to Come Out as Gay

Tadd Fujikawa, the youngest player ever to qualify for the U.S. Open at the age of 15, is now the first professional male golfer to come out as gay.

Fujikawa made the announcement in an Instagram post on world suicide prevention day.

Wrote Fujikawa:

Coincidentally, today is world suicide prevention day. However, I was going to share this regardless.

So…I’m gay. Many of you may have already known that. I don’t expect everyone to understand or accept me. But please be gracious enough to not push your beliefs on me or anyone in the LGBTQ community. My hope is this post will inspire each and every one of you to be more empathetic and loving towards one another.

I’ve been back and forth for a while about opening up about my sexuality. I thought that I didn’t need to come out because it doesn’t matter if anyone knows. But I remember how much other’s stories have helped me in my darkest times to have hope. I spent way too long pretending, hiding, and hating who I was. I was always afraid of what others would think/say. I’ve struggled with my mental health for many years because of that and it put me in a really bad place. Now I’m standing up for myself and the rest of the LGBTQ community in hopes of being an inspiration and making a difference in someone’s life. Although it’s a lot more accepted in our society today, we still see children, teens, and adults being ridiculed and discriminated against for being the way we are. Some have even taken their lives because of it. As long as those things are still happening, I will continue to do my best to bring more awareness to this issue and to fight for equality. Whether the LGBTQ is what you support or not, we must liberate and encourage each other to be our best selves, whatever that may be. It’s the only way we can make this world a better place for future generations.

I don’t want this to be focused on me. I just want to spread love and acceptance to others who are in a similar situation. If anyone out there is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. YOU ARE LOVED AND YOU ARE ENOUGH…AS IS, EXACTLY AS YOU ARE!

I can’t wait for the day we all can live without feeling like we’re different and excluded. A time where we don’t have to come out, we can love the way we want to love and not be ashamed. We are all human and equal after all. So I dare you…spread love. Let’s do our part to make this world a better place.

Golf Digest reports: “Fujikawa, a native of Hawaii, came to fame in 2006 when he qualified for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, reaching the national championship at 15 years old. The next year he made the cut at the Sony Open, becoming the youngest player in 50 years to make the weekend at a PGA Tour event. Fujikawa chose to forego college golf and turned pro at 16. He has made 14 career starts on tour, with a T-19 at the 2012 Sony Open his best finish. He bounced around the mini-tours for a decade, but last December won the Hawaii State Open after announcing he was battling issues of depression and anxiety.”

  • Meet Seth Owen, who will also attend the dinner. The openly gay, co-valedictorian of his high school class in Jacksonville, Florida, had his plans to attend Georgetown University upended when his parents told him to leave home after he refused to attend their church — which attacked LGBTQ people. A GoFundMe page set up by one of his high school teachers raised the $20,000 Seth needed to go to college — and then some: the fund exceeded $140,000. CHRIS PAPPAS WINS PRIMARY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE’S 1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT:

NEW STUDY REVEALS SHOCKING RATES OF ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AMONG TRANS ADOLESCENTS: A new study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics documents the alarming levels of attempted suicide among transgender youth — with the highest rates among transgender boys and non-binary youth. “These harrowing statistics lay bare the urgency of building welcoming and safe communities for LGBTQ young people, particularly for transgender youth,” said Ellen Kahn, the HRC Foundation’s Director of Children, Youth and Families Program. “The distressing reality reflected in this study is preventable, and our nation’s schools, political leaders and communities can take concrete steps to combat this epidemic.” More from CNN.

HRC MOURNS LONDON MOORE, BLACK TRANS WOMAN SHOT IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FLORIDA: Local media, which misgendered Moore in their reporting, say local LGBTQ groups are calling on law enforcement to investigate the murder as a hate crime. Moore’s death follows a disturbing wave of violence that has shaken the LGBTQ community in Florida, claiming the lives of at least four transgender women this year.

THE U.S. IS DISENFRANCHISING PEOPLE OF COLOR, OTHER MARGINALIZED VOTERS: The right to vote is sacred, and for many, that right is being attacked. Transgender people are particularly vulnerable to voting discrimination and disenfranchisement due primarily to challenges around valid identification documents. In addition, many LGBTQ people face compounded discrimination based on other characteristics, including race, age, disability and economic status. These vulnerabilities weaken our entire community’s voting power. That’s why it’s more important than ever for us to fight for this crucial right. More from CNN.

It wasn’t that long ago that some Black voters had to pass a test and pay a discriminatory poll tax in order to cast their ballot. Marian Haslem was one of those voters — and she’s now working to ensure more Americans head to the polls this November. pic.twitter.com/KvWiWcogCP

Get ready to go purple: GLAAD launches countdown to 2018 Spirit Day

Get ready to go purple: GLAAD launches countdown to 2018 Spirit Day

The countdown is on for GLAAD’s annual Spirit Day, the largest and most visible anti-bullying campaign in the world aimed at accelerating acceptance of LGBTQ youth.

Click here to take the pledge to stand against bullying

Spirit Day takes place on October 18 this year and will inspire millions of people around the world to wear purple or ‘go purple’ online to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying.

GLAAD’s Spirit Day started in 2010 by high school student Brittany McMillan in response to numerous young LGBTQ lives lost to suicide, Spirit Day now draws the participation of celebrities, schools, faith institutions, national landmarks, corporations, media outlets, sports leagues, and advocates around the world, all joining together to stand against bullying and support LGBTQ youth.

Bullying and harassment are extremely prevalent for the LGBTQ community, especially for youth. According to GLSEN’s 2015 National School Climate Survey, the vast majority of LGBTQ students (85.2%) experienced verbal harassment (e.g., called names or threatened) at school based on a personal characteristic, most commonly sexual orientation (70.8% of LGBTQ students) and gender expression (54.5%).

As anti-LGBTQ policies, hate crimes, and harassment are on the rise, it is now especially important to let all marginalized youth know they are supported.

This year, Spirit Day is on October 18, 2018. Take the Spirit Day pledge to show LGBTQ youth you’ve got their backs at glaad.org/spiritday. Follow @GLAAD on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr to keep up to date with #SpiritDay news.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney Came Together

John Lennon and Paul McCartney Came Together

John Lennon and Paul McCartney beat their meat together, according to a new profile of McCartney in GQ in which he shares several sexually-oriented stories about the Fab Four.

“What it was,” he explains after I have prompted him, “was over at John’s house, and it was just a group of us. And instead of just getting roaring drunk and partying—I don’t even know if we were staying over or anything—we were all just in these chairs, and the lights were out, and somebody started masturbating, so we all did.”

There would be about five of them: McCartney, Lennon, and maybe three of Lennon’s friends. As they each concentrated on their mission, anyone in the group was encouraged to shout out a name that would offer relevant inspiration.

“We were just, ‘Brigitte Bardot!’ ‘Whoo!’” McCartney says, “and then everyone would thrash a bit more.”

At least until one of them—the one you would perhaps expect—opted for disruption over stimulation.

“I think it was John sort of said, ‘Winston Churchill!’” McCartney remembers, and acts out the aghast, stymied reactions.

In the profile, McCartney also discussed how the group listened to George Harrison lose his virginity, and explains why, on one tour in the middle of the winter, they created a Beatles “sandwich.”
