THE READING RAINBOW. Bob Woodward’s Fear. “An ogre made of cheese runs the country…”

MIDTERMS. Could gay rights support push red state Democrats over the finish line? ‘Joe Donnelly is not the only red-state Democrat who went from opposing same-sex marriage in 2012 to viewing it as an issue that could help boost him over the finish line this year. Others include North Dakota’s Heidi Heitkamp, Missouri’s Claire McCaskill and Montana’s Jon Tester. They represent the unity the party now has on gay rights, which still divide Republicans.’

PHILADELPHIA. Black trans woman murdered. “According to a police report, at 1:05 a.m. on Wednesday morning officers responded to a shooting at 4300 Old York Road. Upon arrival, officers found a victim on the highway suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. The victim was taken to Temple Hospital. Sources have confirmed to Philadelphia magazine that the victim was 30-year-old Shantee Tucker, a local black trans woman.”

EXECUTIVE MALFUNCTION. Les Moonves plotted to ruin Janet Jackson’s career after the Super Bowl in 2004. ‘Janet and Justin were eventually banned from the 2004 Grammys, which were scheduled to air a week after the Super Bowl, but Justin made a teary apology, and Les accepted it. But Janet’s ban remained because she didn’t shed tears like Justin did. According to sources, Les reportedly ordered VH1, MTV, and all Viacom-owned radio stations to stop playing Janet’s music and music videos. Her album Damita Jo was released just a month after the Super Bowl, so of course a wide blacklist would hurt.’

BRETT KAVANAUGH. Cory Booker releases new set of ‘confidential’ documents: ‘In one four-page tranche released on Thursday night, Kavanaugh is trying to set up a meeting with Manny Miranda, a then-GOP Senate aide who hacked Democratic files. Kavanaugh has been grilled about what knowledge, if any, he had of Miranda’s actions. In a second 22-page tranche released on Thursday evening, Kavanaugh in 2003 forwards an op-ed which describes Roe v. Wade as a “bad law,” adding: “Interesting piece from Stephen Carter, who is not conservative.”‘

NYT ANONYMOUS OP-ED. Omarosa thinks it was Pence.

FOUR SCORE AND A LOATHSOME BORE. Trump says his speeches will one day be ranked with Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

TAX RETURNS. Democrats say they’ll come for Trump’s: “I’m definitely going to bring it up if we don’t have them by then — that’s a definite,” Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, told The Hill.

ALEX JONES. Twitter drops the hammer: ‘The social-networking company on Thursday announced that it has “permanently suspended” the right-wing talk-show host and his “Infowars” show from both its main service and its Periscope video streaming service. The move was in response to tweets and videos he posted on Wednesday, Twitter said in a series of tweets. “We took this action based on new reports of Tweets and videos posted yesterday that violate our abusive behavior policy, in addition to the accounts’ past violations,” the company said.’

HERE WE GO AGAIN. Cher announces U.S. tour dates.

SINGAPORE. Diplomat urges challenge to gay sex criminalization: “A veteran Singapore diplomat has called on the gay community to challenge a law that bans gay sex in the conservative city-state, following India’s scrapping of similar British colonial-era legislation.”

NFL. These 46 players would support an openly gay teammate. “Some of these supportive players are on practice squads while others are major stars such as Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck and Rob Gronkowski.”

FRIDAY FLASH. Roman Zanetti and ‘Man Ball’.

We Asked. But Judge Kavanaugh Refused To Answer.

We Asked. But Judge Kavanaugh Refused To Answer.

Following GLAAD’s efforts to push senators on the Judiciary Committee to ask about LGBTQ issues, including hand-delivering letters to members of the committee, Senator Kamala Harris and Senator Cory Booker took our questions to the floor, both questioning Judge Brett Kavanaugh on this topic during the second day of confirmation hearings. Yet Judge Kavanaugh refused to answer their questions directly—suggesting that, if confirmed, he won’t be ruling with LGBTQ rights in mind.

First, Senator Kamala Harris questioned Kavanaugh on the Obergefell v. Hodges case, which GLAAD specifically mentioned in the letters delivered by Campus Ambassador Tony Hernandez.

Obergefell, which brought marriage equality nationwide, was a crucial victory for LGBTQ rights. Senator Harris asked: Did Judge Kavanaugh think that Obergefell was correctly decided? Judge Kavanaugh dodged the question, instead responding with an explanation of the judicial history leading up to the case.

“My question is very specific,” said Senator Harris. “Can you comment, on your personal opinion, on whether Obergefell was correctly decided? It’s a yes or no. Please.”

Kavanaugh refused to answer.

Later, Senator Cory Booker asked if it should be legal to fire someone just because they are LGBTQ, saying: “Do we have a legal right to fire somebody just because they’re gay, in your opinion?”

Once again, Kavanaugh declined to answer directly.

Senator Booker continued to raise questions around Kavanaugh’s previous support for an amendment that would ban marriage for gay and lesbian couples when he served in the Bush Administration.

“Judge Kavanaugh refuses to answer simple questions on the dignity of LGBTQ Americans and is unfit to serve on the Supreme Court,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “With the world watching, Kavanaugh refused to tell LGBTQ Americans that we deserve equal protections under the law and Congress should take action before appointing him to a lifetime position where he will no doubt work to undermine our basic rights to liberty and justice.”

If confirmed, Kavanaugh could carry out the expressed views of President Trump, who as a candidate stated that he disagreed with the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges and said he would “strongly consider” appointing judges who would overturn the decision.

A Supreme Court appointment is a lifetime one, and the impact of Kavanaugh’s confirmation could be felt for decades. Judge Kavanaugh has demonstrated that he doesn’t care about LGBTQ interests, and the stakes are just too high.
