Kavanaugh’s Refusal to Answer Basic Questions On Obergefell is Unacceptable, Reveals Threat He Poses

Today, HRC responded to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s repeated refusal to answer basic questions from Senator Kamala Harris on whether the landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, legalizing marriage equality throughout the United States, was decided correctly.

“Brett Kavanaugh’s refusal to answer very basic, very direct questions about the Supreme Court’s historic ruling bringing marriage equality nationwide is alarming and completely unacceptable,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “The Obergefell decision is settled law. If this nominee cannot so much as affirm that or the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people and our families, he should not and must not be granted a lifetime appointment to our nation’s highest court.”

Last month, the Human Rights Campaign released a comprehensive report on the threats Brett Kavanaugh poses to LGBTQ people. This was followed by the release of videos featuring Lillian, a young transgender woman in Alaska, and Laura, a resident of Maine and mother of a transgender son, Jack; both videos focus on the threats to the safety and dignity of LGBTQ people by this nomination. HRC has also mobilized more than 20,000 calls to the Senate demanding Kavanaugh be held accountable on views regarding LGBTQ people.

From non-discrimination protections to health care to LGBTQ military service, Kavanaugh is a nominee clearly hand-picked by anti-LGBTQ organizations to undermine the progress for equality.

CORY BOOKER. Dares John Cornyn to expel him from the Senate for releasing confidential Kavanaugh docs, Dems back up Booker. ‘Booker questioned Kavanaugh on Wednesday night about his stances on racial inequality, referring to emails from his time as a White House counsel for President George W. Bush. But, Republicans later pointed out, one of the emails he was referring to was labeled as “committee confidential.” In one of the emails, Kavanaugh questioned Department of Transportation (DOT) affirmative action regulations.’

MUELLER PROBE. Kavanaugh stumbles… ‘Nearly 12 hours into Brett Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation hearing, Kamala Harris opened with a tantalizing query: Has the Supreme Court nominee ever discussed Robert Mueller’s probe with a lawyer at Kasowitz Benson & Torres, President Donald Trump’s longtime law firm?’

LEAKED KAVANAUGH DOCS. SCOTUS candidate questioned whether Roe v Wade was settled law. ‘The email, written in March 2003, is one of thousands of documents that a lawyer for President George W. Bush turned over to the Senate Judiciary Committee about the Supreme Court nominee but deemed “committee confidential,” meaning it could not be made public or discussed by Democrats in questioning him in hearings this week. It was among several an unknown person provided to The New York Times late Wednesday.’

LIED UNDER OATH. Kavanaugh emails reveal lots of nasty stuff.

Literally the subject line is “spying” and the first line is “I have a friend who is a mole for us.”

Forwarded by Kavanaugh personally, who calls it “interesting”.

Then, under oath, he denied knowing of any “spying” or “mole,” said he would’ve reported it if he’d heard of that. t.co/cm5rWJaFNs

$95 MILLION. Roy Moore suing Sacha Baron Cohen: “Showtime and CBS are also named as defendants in the lawsuit, and he’s seeking $95 million in damages. How he came to the number $95 million, I have no idea. I want to believe it was an arbitrary number chosen by his lawyers after Roy kept suggesting numbers in the teens.”

JOHN KERRY. On the NYT anonymous op-ed: “What it really means is we don’t have a president. We have a president who’s there, but he is not capable of doing the job or living up to the responsibilities. And that – you can imagine what people all around the world are reading.”

CROWD SIZE. National Park Service photographer cropped photos of inauguration to make crowd appear larger after Trump intervened: ‘The photographer cropped out empty space “where the crowd ended” for a new set of pictures requested by Trump on the first morning of his presidency, after he was angered by images showing his audience was smaller than Barack Obama’s in 2009. The detail was revealed in investigative reports released to the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act by the inspector general of the US interior department. They shed new light on the first self-inflicted crisis of Trump’s presidency, when his White House falsely claimed he had attracted the biggest ever inauguration audience.

RIP. Buck Harris, gay health and radio pioneer: “After several years of fibrosis, Harris died Saturday at his summer home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, from complications of lung cancer. He was 70…In 1984, Gov. Richard Celeste made Harris what was believed to be the nation’s first state consultant on gay health. Harris taught safe sex at gay bathhouses and bars, which he defended against many critics.”

BREATHIN IN REVERSE. Fans discover a hidden message in Ariana Grande’s track.

INDEFINITELY. Trump administration moves to hold immigrant families in detention indefinitely: ‘Nick Miroff and Maria Sacchetti at the Washington Post report that the Trump Regime is “preparing to circumvent limits on the government’s ability to hold minors in immigration jails by withdrawing from the Flores Settlement Agreement, the federal consent decree that has shaped detention standards for underage migrants since 1997.” Further, the proposed changes “would allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to expand its family detention facilities in order to keep parents and children together in custody for lengthier periods. ICE currently has three such facilities, which it calls ‘family residential centers,’ with a combined capacity of about 3,500 beds.”‘

BLACK MIRROR OF THE DAY. New Peloton-style fitness classes done with a two-way smart mirror. “The hardware combines an LCD camera, one-way mirror, microphone, speakers and camera to provide a two-way interactive experience. As with Peloton, classes are filmed in-studio in New York City and streamed directly to the device live or on-demand. At launch, Mirror will have access to more than 50 classes, including cardio, strength, yoga, Pilates and boxing.”

BIRDS AND BEES OF THE DAY. Jimmy Kimmel talks to virgin Bachelor Colton Underwood (like he’s a child) about how to have sex. But, you know, there are other ways to have sex aside from the vagina.

HRC Endorses Kathleen Clyde, Rob Richardson and Zack Space for Ohio State Office

HRC Endorses Kathleen Clyde, Rob Richardson and Zack Space for Ohio State Office

HRC announced its endorsement of Kathleen Clyde for Ohio Secretary of State, Rob Richardson for Ohio State Treasurer and Zack Space for Ohio State Auditor.

“As thousands of LGBTQ Ohioans remain at risk of discrimination, it is more important than ever that we elect pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot who are committed to protecting our state’s most vulnerable communities,” said HRC Ohio State Director Shawn Copeland. “Kathleen Clyde, Zack Space and Rob Richardson are incredible advocates for Ohio’s working families, who will work to ensure that every Ohioan is equally protected under state law. We are proud to endorse their candidacies and look forward to mobilizing our thousands of members and supporters across the Buckeye State to turn out for equality in November.”

State Representative Kathleen Clyde is running for Ohio Secretary of State. Clyde, a longtime advocate for accountability, transparency and the end of partisan gerrymandering, has been a strong ally to Ohio’s LGBTQ community since joining the Statehouse in 2011. She is a co-sponsor of the Ohio Fairness Act, crucial legislation that would bar discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in areas of employment, housing and public accommodations in Ohio. Clyde has also advocated fiercely on behalf of reproductive rights and will continue to fight for fairer, more equal elections as Secretary of State.

“The work HRC is doing in Ohio and across the country to promote equality is remarkable, and I am proud to have earned their endorsement,” said Kathleen Clyde. “I look forward to continuing the important work of making our state more welcoming for LGBT Ohioans and more attractive to entrepreneurs looking to start a business and create jobs in Ohio.”

Rob Richardson is running for Ohio Treasurer. He is committed to bringing efficiency and fiscal responsibility to the office of Treasurer, putting his constituents first, and ensuring that Ohio invests in companies and initiatives that support LGBTQ equality. A longtime vocal supporter of equality, Richardson will continue to promote more equitable outcomes for Ohio’s marginalized communities, as he works to strengthen the state’s economy as Treasurer.

“I’m immensely proud to receive the support and endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign,” said Rob Richardson. “Since their inception nearly four decades ago, HRC has fought tirelessly for justice and equality for the LGBTQ community. While we’ve made progress in recent years, we still have a long way to go. I’ve always been a fighter, and I will continue to fight and advocate for equal rights until all are treated equally under the law, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.”

Former U.S. Representative Zack Space is running for Ohio State Auditor. Space has spent his career fighting for Ohio’s working families. While in Congress, Space voted to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, expand hate crimes protections to include the LGBTQ community, and to repeal the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In November Space will be facing anti-equality extremist Congressman Keith Faber.

“I’m running for Auditor of State to rid our political system of the corrupting influences of money and partisan gerrymandering, and the extremism that they enable,” said Zack Space. “I’m proud to stand with the Human Rights Campaign to promote the fundamental right of every Ohioan to be afforded dignity, respect, and full equality by their fellow citizens and by their government.”

In Ohio, HRC has identified more than 1.8 million Equality Voters — voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Ohio in the 2018 cycle, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC (www.hrc.org) and authorized by the Kathleen Clyde Committee, Zack Space for Ohio and Rob Richardson for Ohio Treasurer.
