Pope Francis: Gay Children ‘Have the Right to a Family, and the Family Not Throwing Them Out’
Speaking in Ireland on Sunday following a Catholic family rally, Pope Francis responded to a question from reporters about how a parent should respond if their child comes out as gay.
Said the Pope, according to the AP: “There have always been gay people and people with homosexual tendencies…Don’t condemn. Dialogue. Understand, give the child space so he or she can express themselves…Ignoring child with this tendency shows a lack of motherhood and fatherhood….This child has the right to a family. And the family not throwing him out.”
The Pope is visiting Ireland on the first papal visit there since 1979, and the country now has a gay prime minister, Leo Varadkar.
The Washington Post reports: ‘In an interview with RTE news Friday, Varadkar said he hoped to talk to the pope about issues including clerical sex abuse and the exclusion of the LGBT community from the church. Varadkar had a brief meeting with the pope following his more public remarks Saturday. His spokesman told the Irish Times that he “said to the pope that there are huge numbers of people here who have faith in their heart but who feel excluded and alienated from the church because of what happened.”240

NBC News reports: ‘Three people were admitted to the Jacksonville Memorial Hospital and are in stable condition, according to a hospital spokesperson. The shooting appears to have occurred inside a pizza restaurant that includes a bar dedicated to video games and other forms of gaming. The bar was in the middle of hosting the Madden 19 Southeastern Qualifier Tournament, which comes with a $5,000 prize. Madden 19 is the latest NFL football video game put out by sports game publisher EA Sports.’
Variety adds: “The tournament, which was held at GLHF Game Bar in the Landing along the St. Johns River, was broadcast on Twitch. Multiple loud gunshots can be heard over footage of gamers playing “Madden NFL 19.” As the controller disconnects, audio can be heard of an attendee saying, “F—, what is he shooting with?” More shots are fired, and screaming can be heard in the background.”
March for our Lives Jacksonville is working on coordinating a response to the recent mass shooting. We once again are incredibly devastated to hear of such tragedy. We need to make sure this does not ever happen again in our city!! #TheLandingMassShooting

Playwright and Screenwriter Neil Simon Dead at 91
Playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon has died at the age of 91 of complications related to pneumonia, according to his publicist.
Variety reports: ‘A statement from his reps said, “Neil Simon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright, died last night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. The cause was complications from pneumonia….His wife, Elaine Joyce Simon, was at his bedside along with Mr. Simon’s daughters, Ellen Simon and Nancy Simon.” Beginning in the 1960s, Simon could guarantee good Broadway advance sales, a rare feat for a writer. He had more than 30 plays mounted on Broadway, including four that ran simultaneously in 1966: “Sweet Charity,” “The Star-Spangled Girl,” “The Odd Couple” and “Barefoot in the Park.”’
Playbill adds: ‘Simon also made his mark as a creator of original screenplays, writing the scripts for the 1972 critical hit The Heartbreak Kid, which was directed by Elaine May; The Out-of-Towners, starring Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis as hapless visitors comically victimized by New York City; Murder By Death, a spoof of the detective genre; and the 1977 romantic comedy The Goodbye Girl, which starred his then-wife Marsha Mason and helped to make Richard Dreyfuss a star. He was nominated for an Oscar for the latter, as well as for the films of California Suite, The Sunshine Boys, and The Odd Couple. He won a Golden Globe for The Goodbye Girl, and was nominated for The Sunshine Boys and The Heartbreak Kid.’

Amsterdam Pride: Amsterdam Pride or Amsterdam Gay Pride is a citywide gay-festival held annually at the center of Amsterdam during the first weekend of August. The festival attracts several hundred-thousand visitors each year and is one of the largest publicly held annual events in the Netherlands.
The peak of the festival is during the Canal Parade, a parade of boats of large variety on the first Saturday of August, which usually goes from Oosterdok, Zwanenburgwal and the Oudeschans, Amstel, over the Prinsengracht to Westerdok (clockwise since 2017).
Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors come to this event and is therefore one of the busiest public events in the Netherlands. In the United States, the Amsterdam Gay Pride was voted the best Gay Pride celebration in Europe in 2008 and in 2018 the Amsterdam Pride was voted Best Public Event in the Netherlands.
