GOP Candidate Said Homosexuality Kills More People Than Smoking, Wants to Ban Mention of It in Public Schools
GOP Candidate Said Homosexuality Kills More People Than Smoking, Wants to Ban Mention of It in Public Schools
Hardy Billington, a Republican candidate expected to win his run for state representative in Missouri, is a hateful extremist liar who endangers gay kids.
The St. Louis Dispatch reports: “A blurb promoting his 2006 book called legalizing same-sex marriage an ‘outrage.’ He has asserted that homosexual ‘lifestyles’ kill people at a higher rate than smoking tobacco. In 2012, Billington bought a newspaper ad in support of an effort to ban the mention of homosexuality in public schools. Now, Billington, 65, is running to represent Poplar Bluff in the Missouri House. If Billington wins in November, no one will be surprised. Four-fifths of the voters in Butler County cast ballots for Donald Trump.”
Billington does have a Democratic opponent, however. Robert Smith, a former circuit judge and prosecutor, told the paper that he could not let Billington run unopposed.
Billington has also met with opposition online.
Writes Tyler Travers, in a Facebook post that has been shared more than 100 times: ‘This is America and everyone is allowed to hold their own beliefs. But we should not allow the most cold-hearted beliefs to represent our district. True Christians know that Jesus loved everyone and that he wanted us to “love thy neighbour as thyself.” Mr. Billington’s views are twisted, and it is hypocritical that he should use the guise of Christianity to promote his hate. A vote for Mr. Billington is a shameful vote. If the upstanding Speaker of the Missouri House, Todd Richardson, is replaced by Mr. Billington, that will be a disgraceful stain that our district will bear for years to come.

HRC REPORT: Lawmakers Must Eliminate Loopholes That Enable Discrimination Based on “Misperceptions”
HRC REPORT: Lawmakers Must Eliminate Loopholes That Enable Discrimination Based on “Misperceptions”
Today, HRC released a new report emphasizing the critical need for lawmakers to address court-created loopholes that undermine federal, state, and local employment non-discrimination protections in instances when discrimination is based on an employer’s misperceptions about the employee.
The new report, Discrimination Based on Perceived Characteristics, outlines how, in many jurisdictions, the loopholes actually allow employees to be discriminated against if their harasser or employer has targeted them based on an incorrect assumption about their race, religion, or other characteristic. District courts created the loopholes in non-discrimination protections by unconscionably ruling that discrimination based on misperceptions is not prohibited in federal non-discrimination law. The Equality Act would resolve the problem by ensuring that employees are clearly protected based on both “actual or perceived” characteristics.
“These court-created ‘misperception’ loopholes seriously undermine strong employment non-discrimination laws that are essential to ensuring productive and inclusive workplaces,” said HRC Associate Legal Director Robin Maril, one of the authors of the report. “Discrimination is harmful, regardless of whether or not it’s based on an incorrect assumption about who someone is. It’s crucially important that lawmakers address this troubling problem by passing legislation like the Equality Act to explicitly protect against discrimination based on both ‘actual or perceived’ characteristics.”
The report details examples of misperception discrimination, including anti-gay harassment or intimidation by co-workers regardless of the employee’s actual sexual orientation; failure to interview a candidate on the assumption that the candidate is a member of a certain race or ethnic class, regardless of their actual race or ethnicity; and refusal to promote an otherwise-qualified employee because of anti-Muslim or anti-Semitic bias, regardless of the actual religion of the employee.
A number of district courts have ruled that federal non-discrimination laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — which prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin — do not, however, prohibit “misperception” discrimination. According to the report, these decisions mean that, in many jurisdictions, employees who are subjected to clear harassment or discrimination may have no recourse if the harassers or the employer have made incorrect assumptions about their race, religion, sexual orientation or other characteristic.
State and municipal lawmakers can prevent this misinterpretation by the courts and explicitly cover misperception discrimination by including language such as “actual or perceived” characteristics in non-discrimination laws. This language does not change the burden of proof or result in frivolous cases; it simply closes this court-created loophole.
At the federal level, the Equality Act — legislation that would finally guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s existing civil rights laws — would also provide a solution by ensuring federal civil rights protections are clearly based on both “actual or perceived” characteristics. The bipartisan legislation is co-sponsored by more than 240 Members of Congress.

Trump Calls on Jeff Sessions to Stop the Mueller Probe
Trump Calls on Jeff Sessions to Stop the Mueller Probe
It’s apparent that Donald Trump is feeling the encroaching Muller probe closing in on his campaign. In a series of tweets, Trump called on Jeff Sessions to put a stop to the investigation. Trump first quoted Alan Dershowitz.
Tweeted Trump, quoting Dershowitz: “FBI Agent Peter Strzok (on the Mueller team) should have recused himself on day one. He was out to STOP THE ELECTION OF DONALD TRUMP. He needed an insurance policy. Those are illegal, improper goals, trying to influence the Election. He should never, ever been allowed to………….remain in the FBI while he himself was being investigated. This is a real issue. It won’t go into a Mueller Report because Mueller is going to protect these guys. Mueller has an interest in creating the illusion of objectivity around his investigation.” ALAN DERSHOWITZ….”

Trump then called on Sessions to stop the investigation: “..This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further. Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!”

MEET WESTON, JUST THE KIND OF KID WHO HOUSE REPUBLICANS ARE TRYING TO HARM WITH THEIR ANTI-LGBTQ CHILD WELFARE AMENDMENT: NBC’s Julie Compton (@julieallmighty) reports that Weston Charles-Gallo entered the foster care system at age 14 after facing abuse from his parents for being gay. After several placements, he found his forever family with two dads and six siblings. Royals and celebrities join forces at 2018 International AIDS Conference
Royals and celebrities join forces at 2018 International AIDS Conference
The 22nd International AIDS Conference, held this week in Amsterdam, Netherlands, reaffirmed the necessity of global involvement and advocacy in the struggle against the virus. The star-studded event featured several prominent celebrities turned AIDS activists giving speeches solidifying their support for finding a cure.
Delivering some of the ceremonial opening remarks was Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive director. In his speech he included the disproportionate opportunities in lieu of diversity efforts, which ultimately slows down the pace toward meeting goals for 2020. Sidibé’s wake-up call echoed the needs for inclusion for everyone in the HIV prevention crisis.
Newly-married Prince Harry, whose organization Sentebale provides HIV education, HIV prevention tools, and HIV advocacy platforms to eradicate the stigma associated with HIV and AIDS. Giving a speech at the Conference, Prince Harry reaffirmed his pledge to destigmatizing the disease.
Along with Sir Elton John, the Prince announced a new billion-dollar campaign, called the MenStar Coalition, that focuses on “tackling the root cause of this problem–the lack of awareness of HIV prevention amongst hard-to-reach young men.” The “global partnership” will include partners like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Actress and former GLAAD Media Award recipient of the Vanguard Award (2006), Charlize Theron, also attended the conference in Amsterdam to continue her longtime fight against HIV/AIDS and the stigmas that come with it.
When speaking on the global viewpoint of HIV/AIDS, Theron said, “We have come a long way as a global community from that moral panic that defined early stages of this epidemic.” Another royal made an appearance at this year’s conference as well. Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau lent her voice and presence to the conference, and even took part in the Towards Zero Together march during that time.
One major way the Conference pledged to fight was in its decree of the Amsterdam Affirmation, a nine step statement asserting the global commitment to supporting programming, promoting inclusion and amplifying voices to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalized are not left behind in the HIV response. The Affirmation serves as a rallying cry aiming to show support and solidarity to those most affected by the virus, even on a micro level.
According to the International AIDS Society, female populations, gay men, and marginalized and minority populations are all much more vulnerable to HIV and AIDS due to factors like gender inequalities, lack of education and resources, and lack of legislative protections.
