Facebook Shuts Down Dozens of Pages and Accounts Created to Interfere in 2018 Midterms

Facebook Shuts Down Dozens of Pages and Accounts Created to Interfere in 2018 Midterms

Facebook said it shut down more than two dozen accounts and pages it said were created to interfere in the 2018 midterm elections.

The NYT reports: “In a series of briefings on Capitol Hill this week, the company told lawmakers that it detected the influence campaign on Facebook and Instagram as part of its investigations into election interference. It has been unable to tie the accounts to Russia, whose Internet Research Agency was at the center of an indictment earlier this year for interfering in the 2016 election, but company officials told Capitol Hill that Russia was possibly involved, according to two of the officials.”

Politico adds: ‘More than 290,000 Facebook users followed the now-shuttered pages, which were created between March 2017 and May 2018. The most followed – titled “Aztlan Warriors,” “Black Elevation,” and “Mindful Being” – reached more than 290,000 users. The topics also included the hashtag #AbolishICE, a popular new rallying cry on the left following outrage over the Trump administration’s separation of immigrant families along the Mexican border. The accounts also ran about 150 ads on Facebook and Instagram, at a cost of $11,000 paid in U.S. dollars.’

Trans Women Aren’t Women According to Michigan Appeals Court Ruling for Ejected Planet Fitness Member

Trans Women Aren’t Women According to Michigan Appeals Court Ruling for Ejected Planet Fitness Member

A Michigan appeals court issued a transphobic ruling for an ejected member of a Planet Fitness gym who sued in 2015 after her membership was revoked because she complained about a transgender woman (whom she described as a “man”) in the locker room. The ruling calls transgender womenmen who identify as women.”

Yvette Cormier, who had her Planet Fitness membership revoked after making waves about trans woman Carlotta Sklodowska using the women’s locker room, sued the fitness chain for more than $25,000.

After Cormier complained to local staff in Michigan and escalated her concerns with corporate offices, Planet Fitness enacted its “Judgement Free Zone” policy and cancelled Cormier’s membership.

A press release detailing the lawsuit read in part:

“Ms. Cormier was wrongfully denied the benefits of her contract with Planet Fitness and wrongfully denied the use of the public accommodations at Defendant’s gym because she objected to Defendant’s unknown policy.

“Mrs. Cormier has filed this lawsuit to protect Michigan women and children and to hold Planet Fitness accountable for its irresponsible policy and actions. This case further illustrates the potential harm caused by adding the proposed new categories of sexual orientation/gender identity to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.”

Elliott-Larsen prohibits discrimination based on race, age, sex, religion and more, but does not offer protections based on sexual orientation.

Cormier’s complaint listed the alleged damages she suffered as “loss of use of gym facilities,” “fear about using the gym facilities,” “embarrassment and humiliation,” “severe emotional distress” and “damage to reputation.”

It claimed Cormier’s rights were violated in seven counts including breach of contract, an exemplary damages claim, invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress and three counts of sexual harassment under Elliott-Larsen.

According to the summons and complaint, she suffered “aggravation, annoyance, discomfort, disgrace, feelings of oppression, humiliation, inconvenience, indignation, insult, mental anxiety, mental suffering, mortification, outrage, scorn, shame, sorrow, vexation, and worry.”

Think Progress reports:

A Michigan lower court ruled against her and last year, a state court of appeals agreed that she suffered no intrusion of privacy.

But in April, the Michigan Supreme Court revived the case and sent it back to the appellate court to examine a legal question it hadn’t initially considered. And this time, the panel found that Planet Fitness violated its own contract with Cormier, but the ruling requires a foundation of transphobia.

Cormier alleged that Planet Fitness misrepresented the nature of its contract when it said that she would have access to a private women’s locker room but did not disclose that so, too, would “men who self-identity as women.” (The court conspicuously refuses to use the word “transgender” and repeatedly refers to transgender women with this phrase.) This inclusive policy would have affected her decision to purchase a membership and thus is relevant to her claim that Planet Fitness engaged in deceptive business practices.

“Plaintiff’s actions indicate that she strongly preferred a locker room and a restroom in which individuals who are assigned biologically male are not present,” the court wrote, “and it is thus reasonable to infer that defendants’ failure to inform plaintiff of the unwritten policy affected her decision to join the gym.”

The decision says that Cormier has a right to sue and sends it back to a lower court.

HRC Endorses Madeleine Dean for U.S. House

HRC Endorses Madeleine Dean for U.S. House

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Pennsylvania State Representative Madeleine Dean for U.S. House in Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District.

“State Rep. Madeleine Dean is a proven leader who will stand up for Pennsylvania’s working families in Congress,” said HRC Pennsylvania State Director Allison VanKuiken. “In the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Madeleine Dean has worked to advance fairness and equality. HRC is proud to endorse her bid to represent the people of Pennsylvania’s 4th District in Congress, and we look forward to mobilizing our thousands of members and supporters across the district to turn out for equality in November.”

“For decades, the Human Rights Campaign has worked tirelessly to promote, protect and achieve equality for LGBTQ Americans,” said Madeleine Dean. “HRC’s voice – three million members strong – and their vision have pushed us forward. That’s why I am honored to earn their endorsement and energized to get to work in Congress on the crucial issue of LGBTQ equality. Together, we will work to better fulfill the promise of our country’s founding — that we the people are all created equal.”

During her time in the Pennsylvania State House, Madeleine Dean has been a strong supporter of LGBTQ equality. She is a member of the Pennsylvania LGBTQ Equality Caucus and a cosponsor of the Pennsylvania Fairness Act, a bill that would update the state’s non-discrimination law to explicitly protect LGBTQ people from discrimination at work, in housing and in public places. Dean supports marriage equality and the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights laws.

In Pennsylvania, HRC has identified more than 2.3 million “Equality Voters” — voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies, including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Pennsylvania in the 2018 cycle, and has already put four staff members and resources on the ground in the state. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

Pride.be – Pride 2018 – Your Local Power

Feeling free and at home in your neighborhood, town or city. Be and show yourself in the streets. Holding hands with the person you love and smiling at each other in public. Our personal lives occur in the public space. Considering the approaching communal elections, everyone (youngsters, seniors, families, couples and all people – no matter what gender or orientation) asks the local politicians: How do you make a difference? What do you do to improve diversity in our everyday life? Where the rain makes way for the sun, we will walk proudly under the rainbow!

We will all be heading to the voting booths for the local elections on 14th of October. Deciding which circle to colour in is an important decision. A conscious decision can lead to a better living environment in your city or municipality.

And we’re not just talking about the redesign of the local park, the policies in the municipal school, or the proper functioning of the local Public Centre for Social Welfare. Your local municipal or city administration can also make a real difference and turn the place where you live into a true rainbow bubble, if that’s what you’d like, of course.

So it’s no wonder that this year’s Pride is focusing on the local elections. Belgian Pride is putting the municipalities and cities in the limelight in 2018, or better yet, at the end of the rainbow! We want the slogan ‘Your Local Power!’ to encourage municipal and city administrations to enact explicit, integrated local LGBTI+ policies.

Municipalities and cities can and must make the difference. They must accept responsibility for the well-being of all their residents. Flying the rainbow flag at the local government offices during the Pride period is a symbol of this. This is also a way that the municipality or city can show their solidarity with the LGBTI+ community. This symbolic gesture is not an infringement on neutrality. On the contrary, we can only actively work on ending all forms of discrimination once there is recognition for diversity and inclusion.

Policy-makers can make the lives of many citizens that much rosier by taking both small and large actions: by introducing a diversity charter in sports clubs, by making information on gender and sexuality available at the local libraries, by providing logistical and financial support to local associations, testimonials, and courses in the municipal education system, by holding a queer film festival in the local movie theatre or cultural centre, by holding LGBTI+ actions in community centres and youth centres, by providing information on what to do if you are the victim or witness of discrimination, by offering space for intimacy and (LGBTI+) sexuality in assisted-living centres, by training local police precincts and municipal officials, by including Equal Opportunity as an explicit competence within the city administration, etc.

The list of things that cities and municipalities can do is endless. Plus, many of these actions are very easy to implement. Sometimes, your local administration only needs a little boost, and you can give them that boost in the voting booth on 14th of October. A good local administration meets the needs and requirements of all residents. What does the LGBTI+ community in your city or municipality need?

You can already send the politicians a signal that is loud and clear on Saturday, the 19th of May. Make your wishes heard during the Belgian Pride.

We hope to see you there! Everyone is welcome!

Donald Trump attacked the billionaire conservative activist donors Charles and David Koch in a Tuesday morning tweetstorm in which he also questioned a government settlement with a company that will allow for the distribution of blueprints for 3-D printed AR-15 rifles.

Tweeted Trump: “The globalist Koch Brothers, who have become a total joke in real Republican circles, are against Strong Borders and Powerful Trade. I never sought their support because I don’t need their money or bad ideas. They love my Tax & Regulation Cuts, Judicial picks & more. I made………them richer.
