HRC Endorses Jeremy Moss, Jennifer Suidan and Ricardo White for Michigan State Legislature

HRC announced its endorsement of State Representative Jeremy Moss for Michigan State Senate, and Jennifer Suidan and Ricardo White for Michigan House of Representatives.

“As thousands of LGBTQ Michiganders remain at risk of discrimination and harassment, it is more important than ever for us to elect pro-equality legislative majorities who will protect our state’s most vulnerable communities,” said HRC Michigan State Director Amritha Venkataraman. “Jeremy Moss, Jennifer Suidan and Ricardo White are incredible advocates for Michigan’s working families, who will fight tooth and nail to ensure that every Michigander is equally protected under state law. We are proud to endorse their candidacies and look forward to mobilizing our thousands of members and supporters across the Great Lakes State to turn out for equality in November.”

Jeremy Moss is running to represent Michigan’s 11th State Senate District. Currently in his second term in the State House, Moss has been a champion for the middle class, fair elections and strengthening Michigan’s public education. A fierce advocate for LGBTQ Michiganders, Moss has also co-sponsored legislation that would amend Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to explicitly include protections for residents based on sexual orientation and gender identity. He is the second openly LGBTQ member elected to the Michigan House of Representatives and, if elected, would be the first openly LGBTQ member of the State Senate.

Jennifer Suidan is running to represent Michigan’s 39th State House District. A lifelong Lakes Area resident, Suidan is committed to being the voice of her community in Lansing. She is a staunch advocate for LGBTQ equality, who supports marriage equality and expanding Michigan’s existing civil rights law to explicitly including protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ricardo White is running to represent Michigan’s 6th State House District.  As a legislative staffer and longtime political activist, White has spent his career serving the people of Michigan, and fighting for equality and fairness. As a staffer in the Michigan State House, White worked closely with state lawmakers on legislation amending the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to explicitly include protections for LGBTQ Michiganders. If elected, White would be the first openly LGBTQ African-American State Representative in Michigan.

Following the August 7 primary, HRC will be examining races up and down the ballot to determine additional endorsements for the 2018 general election. In Michigan, HRC has identified 1.1 million “Equality Voters” — voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Michigan in the 2018 cycle, and has already put staff and resources on the ground in the state. Last July, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

COLBERT. Our president says don’t believe what you see and read. “Oh good. Wooo, I was worried because what I’m seeing and reading is that the President is a racist, horny old burger-goblin who literally steals children from poor people.”

Joe Biden Davos2020. Joe Biden is Democrat Trump fears most. ‘Trump’s calculation is based partly on how weak he sees other Democratic possibilities, including Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, and partly on who’s capable of appealing to his base of working class whites.’

SEAN SPICER BOOK. Trump’s LGBT support at RNC convention was sham deal to appease anti-Trump delegate: ‘The final name that needed to be scrubbed from the petition, Spicer writes, was that of Washington, D.C., delegate Robert Sinners. The book describes an alleged deal between Sinners, who Spicer says told the Manafort team “he wanted Donald Trump to support gay rights,” and senior Trump communications advisor Jason Miller. “Jason assured Sinners that Trump would be the most ‘inclusive’ candidate the Republican Party ever had,” Spicer writes.’

MEDICAL DISCOVERY OF THE DAY. Cat feces give you confidence: “A mind-controlling parasite found in cat feces may give people the courage they need to become entrepreneurs, researchers reported Tuesday. They found that people who have been infected with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite are more likely to major in business and to have started their own businesses than non-infected people. The parasite, which makes rodents unafraid of cats, may be reducing the fear of failure in people, Stefanie Johnson of the University of Colorado and colleagues said.”

DAVID MIXNER. Legendary LGBT activist won’t be put out to pasture: “The purpose of a movement is not to prove how right you are… but to make it comfortable for others to join you,” Mixner tells young activists now. “And they can’t join you if you’re self-righteous or if you punish them because they came later. So, our job is to … welcome people into our [movement]. To make it an attractive enough place that they want to be part of it. Not to repel [them].”

IDAN DERSHOWITZ. The Secret History of Leviticus: ‘As I argue in an article published in the latest issue of the journal Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel, there is good evidence that an earlier version of the laws in Leviticus 18 permitted sex between men. In addition to having the prohibition against same-sex relations added to it, the earlier text, I believe, was revised in an attempt to obscure any implication that same-sex relations had once been permissible.

TEASER OF THE DAY. Peter Dinklage in I Think We’re Alone Now. “Del (Peter Dinklage) is alone in the world. After the human race is wiped out, he lives in his small, empty town, content in his solitude and the utopia he’s methodically created for himself – until he is discovered by Grace (Elle Fanning), an interloper whose history and motives are obscure. Worse yet, she wants to stay.”

Oklahoma Woman Goes Viral Offering to Be Stand-In Mom at Gay Weddings

Oklahoma Woman Goes Viral Offering to Be Stand-In Mom at Gay Weddings
Sara Cunningham

An Oklahoma mom who struggled for years with her own son’s coming out has gone viral after offering to be a stand-in parent at weddings for gay people whose biological parents have rejected them

Wrote Sara Cunningham in a post that has been shared more than 8,000 times: “PSA. If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t. Call me. I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles.”

NBC News reports: ‘Just days before her now-viral post, Cunningham said several women had shared with her emotionally devastating stories at a same-sex wedding rehearsal in which Cunningham was participating. One woman recounted how her mother asked to be given “a heads up” when it was time for her daughter to kiss her bride, presumably so her mother could turn away. Another woman shared how her mother chose not to attend. “That’s what prompted the post, and I had no idea I would hear from so many in the community,” Cunningham said, including “parents from all around the world that are willing to stand in.””

HRC Endorses Steve Sisolak for Nevada Governor

HRC Endorses Steve Sisolak for Nevada Governor

HRC announced its endorsement of Steve Sisolak for Nevada Governor. In November, Sisolak will face Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, who has a long record demonizing and attacking the LGBTQ community.

“Steve Sisolak is the clear choice for Nevada voters and the champion we need to move equality forward across the Silver State,” said HRC Nevada State Director Briana Escamilla. “As Governor, he will work to protect our hard fought progress and ensure that our state remains welcoming and open to all. HRC is proud to endorse his candidacy for Governor and we look forward to turning out the pro-equality vote for Steve Sisolak this November.”

“I am proud to have the support of the Human Rights Campaign,” said Steve Sisolak. “Across the country, we have taken enormous strides in ensuring equality and justice for all communities. But there is still so much more work to be done. As governor, I will continue to fight for the protections that our LGBTQ+ community deserves and work towards true representation and equality. I am honored to have HRC by my side.”

As the current chairman of the Clark County Commission and a former member of the Nevada Board of Regents, Sisolak has a long career serving the people of Nevada. He is a strong advocate for LGBTQ equality who supports marriage equality and non-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ community in all aspects of life. Sisolak’s opponent, AG Adam Laxalt, is no friend to the LGBTQ community. Laxalt opposes marriage equality, previously vowing to “vigorously” defend the state’s now defunct marriage ban, and supports banning LGBTQ people from serving openly in the military. Laxalt has also supported a license to discriminate in the health care system that would prioritize physicians’ beliefs over life-saving patient care, and opposes the Obama Administration’s live-saving guidance protecting LGBTQ youth facing discrimination and bullying in our schools.

In Nevada, HRC has identified more than 600,000 “Equality Voters” — voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Nevada in the 2018 cycle, and has already put staff and resources on the ground in the state. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.
