REALLY!? Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers come for James Comey. “Really, James Comey? You’re worried the Democrats are going to move too far to the left? Really? I don’t know if you remember, but we were just about to have a nice, boring, moderate Democrat for a president until you decided to open your mouth a week before the election, you big, dumb scarecrow.”

ROBERT MUELLER. Reviewing Trump’s tweets as part of obstruction inquiry: “The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, is scrutinizing tweets and negative statements from the president about Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey, according to three people briefed on the matter.

OREGON. Federal judge rules transgender people have right to use restroom of their choice.

IMPEACH ROD ROSENSTEIN? Paul Ryan rejects the idea: ‘The Wisconsin Republican told reporters the Department of Justice was largely complying with a GOP demand for documents surrounding the FBI’s Russia investigation. “I don’t think we should be cavalier with this process or this term,” he said of impeachment. “I don’t think this rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.” That puts him in conflict with the no. 3 Republican, Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who expressed support for the idea in a Fox News interview earlier in the day.’ Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) also opposed: “Walker told reporters on Capitol Hill that he would vote against any effort to impeach Rosenstein in the House a day after two members of the House Freedom Caucus joined nine co-sponsors to announce articles of impeachment against Rosenstein.”

JIM JORDAN. Ohio Rep. who ignored abuse of wrestlers at OSU to announce bid for Speaker.”Should the American people entrust us with the majority again in the 116th Congress, I plan to run for Speaker of the House to bring real change to the House of Representatives,” said a statement Jordan released through a spokesman. “President Trump has taken bold action on behalf of the American people,” his statement continued. “Congress has not held up its end of the deal, but we can change that. It’s time to do what we said.”

DEMI LOVATO. Heading back to rehab after hospitalization for overdose.

LOCK HER UP. Jeff Sessions on what he should have said to high school conservatives, but didn’t: “I met with a group of enthusiastic high school students, and they spontaneously broke into that chant. I perhaps should have taken a moment to advise them of the fact that… you’re presumed innocent until cases are made.”

FLORIDA. Federal judge strikes down campus ban on early voting: ‘Calling it a “lopsided” burden on college students, a federal judge on Tuesday told Florida that college and university campuses can be used as early voting sites in this year’s elections. In a scathing ruling, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker called the ban put in place by Secretary of State Ken Detzner unconstitutional. He said it appeared to be done to stop younger voters from casting ballots.’

Mark Zuckerberg providing a “safe haven for hate” on Facebook. “But we are unable to properly grieve for our baby or move on with our lives because you, arguably the most powerful man on the planet, have deemed that the attacks on us are immaterial, that providing assistance in removing threats is too cumbersome, and that our lives are less important than providing a safe haven for hate.”

HONG KONG. Gay civil servant to take spousal benefits case to high court: “Telling the Post of his decision on Thursday, Angus Leung Chun-kwong said he was encouraged by a recent landmark Court of Final Appeal ruling in favour of a lesbian expatriate, known as QT in court, requiring the city’s Immigration Department to grant her a spousal visa.”

HRC Sends FOIA Request to ICE & CBP for Details of the Death of Roxsana Hernandez While in Custody

HRC Sends FOIA Request to ICE & CBP for Details of the Death of Roxsana Hernandez While in Custody

Today, HRC sent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP)for the release of all records related to the detention and death of Roxsana Hernandez, a transgender woman who died while in custody of ICE after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Roxsana Hernandez reached the United States border on May 9, 2018, seeking asylum after fleeing Honduras due to the violence and discrimination she experienced based on her gender identity. She was held for five days by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before being processed into the United States and put into ICE custody in San Diego. She was transferred again to another facility three days later on May 16 before her admission to a nearby hospital on May 17. She passed away on May 25. On May 31, HRC called on ICE to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Hernandez’s death, but has not received a response from ICE to date, nor has there been reports of an investigation.

“The death of Roxsana Hernandez while in the custody of ICE is a tragedy and raises questions that need to be answered,” said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. “It is unclear what medical care was made available to her when she entered the United States and what role the conditions of her initial detention while in CBP custody played in the worsening of her illness. LGBTQ people, especially those in the transgender community, are especially vulnerable to violence and discrimination.”

A report released in 2016 by Human Rights Watch detailed the experiences of 28 transgender women who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border between 2011 and 2015, more than of whom were held in men’s facilities at some point in their detention. Others reported being held in solitary confinement, allegedly for their own protection, while many reported experiencing sexual assault and other forms of violence while in detention.

According to information provided by the Department in response to a request by Rep. Kathleen Rice, LGBTQ immigrants are detained twice as long as other immigrants and also face lengthy stays in solitary confinement despite ICE regulations that stipulate its use as a last resort. ICE also reported to Representative Rice that LGBTQ people accounted for only .14 percent of the people detained by ICE in 2017, but made up 12 percent of reported sexual assault and abuse cases.

The Human Rights Campaign stands with coalition partners in demanding the humane treatment of all undocumented immigrants and will not rest while LGBTQ migrants are subjected to horrific treatment based on their sexuality and gender identity.

HRC Endorses Katie Hobbs for Arizona Secretary of State

HRC Endorses Katie Hobbs for Arizona Secretary of State

Today HRC announced its endorsement of Arizona Senate Minority Leader Katie Hobbs for Arizona Secretary of State.

“Throughout her time in the Arizona legislature, Katie Hobbs has stood shoulder to shoulder with our community, working hard to move equality forward,” said HRC Arizona State Director Justin Unga. “With thousands of Arizonans–including LGBTQ people of color and transgender Arizonans–more vulnerable to discrimination at the ballot box than ever before, we need a Secretary of State who will fight to protect and expand voting rights, and ensure every Arizonan can make their voice heard. Katie Hobbs is a proven problem solver and champion for all Arizonans, and HRC will be working hard on the ground to turn out Arizona’s more than 800,000 Equality Voters for her this November.”

“Throughout my legislative career, I have stood proudly with the LGBTQ community, working to ensure that ALL Arizonans enjoy the same quality of life free from discrimination,” said Katie Hobbs. “I’ve volunteered with LGBTQ youth at one•n•ten, and I have the privilege of working alongside the folks at Phoenix Pride celebrating the LGBTQ community here in the valley. The Human Rights Campaign is doing the important work of electing pro-equality champions around the country and I’m thrilled to have their endorsement in this critical race for Secretary of State.”

First elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2010 and the Arizona State Senate in 2012, Hobbs is a strong advocate for LGBTQ equality, who has supported and co-sponsored several pro-equality bills, including legislation to extend inclusive non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ Arizonans and legislation to repeal discriminatory, anti-LGBTQ adoption language in state statutes. She also worked to extend health care to hundreds of thousands of Arizonans, create new education and job training opportunities, and establish rights for victims of sexual and domestic violence.

In Arizona, HRC has identified more than 800,000 Arizonans as likely Equality Voters, meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Arizona in the 2018 cycle, and has already put staff and resources on the ground in the state. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.
