VICTORY! Delaware Enacts Legislation Protecting LGBTQ Youth from Abusive “Conversion Therapy”

Today, HRC celebrated the signing of SB 65 — legislation protecting Delaware’s LGBTQ youth from the dangerous and debunked practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” With Governor John Carney’s signature, Delaware joins the growing number of states and municipalities adopting critical protections for LGBTQ youth. Just this year, Washington, Maryland, Hawaii and New Hampshire have also enacted these protections.

Delaware is now the 15th state plus Washington, DC to enact laws or regulations protection LGBTQ youth from the dangerous practice. More than forty municipalities have also passed similar protections.

“So-called ‘conversion therapy’ is dangerous, cruel and uniformly rejected by every major mental health and child welfare organization,” said HRC National Press Secretary Sarah McBride, a Delawarean. “Today’s signing is a critical step forward in the fight to ensure that Delaware is a safe and affirming state for all LGBTQ youth, and we hope that the values and progress reflected in this law guide the ongoing conversation in Delaware about protecting LGBTQ students from discrimination. We are grateful to the many advocates, allies, parents, and survivors who spoke out against this abusive practice, Senator Harris McDowell and Representative Debra Heffernan for their leadership in the legislature, and Governor Carney for signing this important bill into law.”

“This bill sends an important message that a child’s sexual orientation or gender identity is neither capable of being changed nor does it need to be changed, and efforts to try to do so in the name of therapy have no place in our State,” said Mark Purpura, a board member of Equality Delaware. “Instead, we should strive to understand and support each child’s unique personal identity to better empower them to thrive in school, at home, and in our community.  Equality Delaware is thankful for the leadership of Senator Harris McDowell and Representative Debra Heffernan and their legislative aides, the other co-sponsors of this bill, and Governor Carney for signing it into law today.”

There is no credible evidence that conversion therapy can change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. To the contrary, research has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people such as depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, and even suicidal behavior. The harmful practice is condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association.

Connecticut, California, Nevada, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Washington, Maryland, Hawaii, New Hampshire and now Delaware all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this abusive practice. A growing number of municipalities have also enacted similar protections, including cities and counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Wisconsin.

According to a recent report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, an estimated 20,000 LGBTQ minors in states without protections will be subjected to conversion therapy by a licensed healthcare professional if state officials fail to act.

HRC has partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and state equality groups across the nation to pass state legislation ending conversion therapy. More information on the lies and dangers of efforts to change sexual orientation or gender identity can be found here.

Derek Chadwick, a 23-year-old Instagram “influencer” and model/actor with a following of more than 275K, has come out as gay in the latest issue of Gay Times.

Said Chadwick to GT: “I would identify now as gay…I’ve been nervous about people seeing my personality because I didn’t want them to jump to conclusions about me without knowing my whole story. It’ll allow me to be more personable on social media. I’ll be able to post more on my stories and videos on Twitter… it’ll allow me to stand up on the stage in front of the LGBTQ community and not feel so pressured about, ‘Oh my God, I wonder they think of me’, or, ‘I wonder what they’ll think of me’. If I can just inspire one person, whoever that is, to be their true self or do something they were scared to do or didn’t feel 100% confident in, that would be the most rewarding part of all this…Being honest and being who you are is always the best way to live.”

We’re Still Shook: Tens Across the Board for the First Season of Pose

We’re Still Shook: Tens Across the Board for the First Season of Pose

Is it time for season two yet? We have been glued to the edges of our seats each Sunday night to watch “Pose,” Ryan Murphy’s latest television series on FX.

Pose is set in New York City, juxtaposing the house/ball scene against the tumultuous political and social climate of the 1980s. The show is anchored in many real stories and experiences of LGBTQ people — including its own cast and crew.

“It’s like a history lesson,” said MJ Rodriguez, who plays Blanca, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “To see what we had to go through in 1987 and how we persevered, which is one of the reasons why a lot of us are here today and able to do shows like this.”

One of the most emotional performances of the season — Rodriguez and Billy Porter’s performance at the AIDS cabaret — was inspired by a conversation between Porter and show creators Ryan Murphy and Steven Canals about Porter’s experiences in the 80s and early 90s.

Hunties, @PoseOnFX is doing IMPORTANT work for our community. #posefx #LGBTQI t.co/uEvxrvgDic

— Billy Porter (@theebillyporter) July 23, 2018

But it’s not just about telling the histories of our movement — Pose is making revolutionary history of its own.

The show features the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles, as well as the largest recurring cast of LGBTQ actors ever for a scripted series. Pose is helmed by a cast and crew of queer and transgender trailblazers including HRC honorees Angelica Ross and Billy Porter, Janet Mock, MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Steven Canals.

And earlier this season, Janet Mock became the first transgender woman of color to both write, produce and direct for a major network television show with “Love is the Message.”

This piece is a deeply affirming finale t.co/5D9hEH8IGt #POSEFX

— Janet Mock (@janetmock) July 23, 2018

At its heart, Pose is a show about family, showing the ways that we can build and choose a community that loves and values us for exactly who we are.

We won’t spoil the end of the finale but we’re certain of one thing: if love is a house, Pose on FX has the key.

Thank you to the entire cast and crew of #PoseFX for a revolutionary and groundbreaking first season. You have reconfigured the TV landscape. There are now boundlessly more categories we can dare to walk in. 10’s across the board!!!

Trump Threatens Amazon with Antitrust Measures Over Bad Press from Bezos-Owned ‘Washington Post’

Trump Threatens Amazon with Antitrust Measures Over Bad Press from Bezos-Owned ‘Washington Post’

Donald Trump threatened Amazon with antitrust charges over bad press from the Washington Post. Both are owned by Jeff Bezos.

Tweeted Trump: ‘The Amazon Washington Post has gone crazy against me ever since they lost the Internet Tax Case in the U.S. Supreme Court two months ago. Next up is the U.S. Post Office which they use, at a fraction of real cost, as their “delivery boy” for a BIG percentage of their packages……..In my opinion the Washington Post is nothing more than an expensive (the paper loses a fortune) lobbyist for Amazon. Is it used as protection against antitrust claims which many feel should be brought?’

It’s a clip that really has to be seen to be believed. In a segment from Sacha Baron Cohen’s new show Who Is America?, Georgia Rep. Jason Spencer drops his pants and chases Cohen, who is posing as an anti-terrorism expert, around a gym floor yelling “America” in an exercise meant to demonstrate how to intimidate a terrorist.

Cohen convinces Spencer that a terrorist’s greatest fear is being a homosexual, and that they are terrified of being touched by bare male buttocks. Cohen also convinces Spencer to draw attention to terrorists in public by using the N-word, and teaches him to try to identify whether someone wearing a burka is a terrorist by shoving a selfie stick under their skirt while pretending to be a Chinese tourist.

Watch:

Georgia House Speaker David Ralston is demanding Spencer resign over the clip, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports: ‘In a statement shortly after the episode aired, Ralston said Spencer’s actions and language in the video are “reprehensible.” “Representative Spencer has disgraced himself and should resign immediately,” said Ralston. “Georgia is better than this.” Other Republican leaders also swiftly condemned Spencer. Secretary of State Brian Kemp removed the lawmaker from his list of endorsements ahead of Tuesday’s GOP runoff for governor and urged him to apologize. And Gov. Nathan Deal called his language “appalling and offensive.” “There is no excuse for this type of behavior, ever,” said Deal, “and I am saddened and disgusted by it.”’
