Neo-Nazi arrested at Pride event in Tennessee: ‘A neo-Nazi who was arrested years ago for parading with a rifle through the streets of a tiny North Dakota town, threatening residents alongside white supremacist Craig Cobb, was arrested over the weekend at a Pride event in Tennessee and charged with assault. Kynan Dutton was part of an odd mix of extremists protesting Pridefest in Knoxville, Tennessee, that included members of the neo-Confederate League of the South, a smattering of other white nationalists, as well as handful of Black Hebrew Israelites. TUNISIA. President Beji Caid Essebsi wants to decriminalize homosexuality. “Among the 230 pages of proposals include scrapping inheritance laws that see women receive only half of what men get. HRC’s Parents for Trans Equality Council and Family Members Celebrate Pride
HRC’s Parents for Trans Equality Council and Family Members Celebrate Pride
This LGBTQ Pride Month, HRC asked members of our Parents for Transgender Equality Council to share why they are proud to celebrate their young, transgender family members.
Pride events are held worldwide in cities large and small, and for some people, it is the only occasion during which they can be out and proud in their community. Pride is typically held in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in New York City, which marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ rights movement in the U.S.
Below are some of our parents’ stories:
“We are proud of our son Max for having the courage to live as his authentic self in a world that still has too many bullies. He has opened our eyes to the power of unconditional love and given us hope for a brighter future.”
— Amber and Adam Briggle, parents of a transgender son
“Dear World: As proud grandparents of a remarkable, gifted transgender child, our acceptance and, better yet, advocacy is expected… As such our greatest challenge is not only to make our complex society aware of the problems we face, but to point them in a direction away from the ugliness of discrimination and hate towards education in understanding the needs of those few who are so different from the fortunate many who are not.”
— Jack and Jacky, proud grandparents of Jazz Jennings
“Jacq is like any other kid. He is kind, sweet and one of my best friends. When he first went public about his transition to his classmates in kindergarten, he was shy when they asked questions, so they went to me for answers. I had no problem with it, since I had done everything in my power as a 7-year-old to protect my brother. I wasn’t about to let my brother get hurt just because of a misunderstanding about what being transgender is, so I tried to make my answers as clear as possible. I’ll always be proud of him.”
— Sydney Tchoryk, age 12, sister of a transgender brother

“We are a sorted bunch, each of us with a different take on the world. Transgender, cisgender, genderqueer, straight – these are just some of our nuances. None of us comes to the table with the exact same set of experiences, opinions, beliefs or truths. But I actually think that’s a good thing. I’d rather be a house of many minds—united by our differences and strengthened by our love. Ultimately, it is our fierce, invisible bonds that move us forward: Toward truth. Toward freedom. And always, toward love.”
— Jodie Patterson, proud mother of a transgender child
“Parenting is inherently difficult, but loving and accepting our children for all that they are brings us ultimate happiness. I am proud of my family for embracing our truths and sticking together through the highs and lows that life brings. We are in this together and we are stronger for it. Love does win.”
— Sarah Watson, mother of a transgender child
“My trans son has taught me to look at the world in a new, less rigid way. And he has taught me a lesson that I thought I had already learned: the freedom to be who you are and express yourself as you know yourself to be at your core is an essential part to living life fully and compassionately.”
— Chris Williams, father of a transgender son

Demi Lovato Launches GLAAD Fundraiser on Facebook for Pride Month
Demi Lovato continues to show massive support for the LGBTQ community. On June 26, Lovato took to her Facebook page to officially kick start a pride fundraiser for GLAAD. Launching the campaign on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling for marriage equality, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer passed her original goal of $5,000 within hours of posting the fundraiser.
Lovato cited her support of the LGBTQ community, GLAAD’s extensive work for the LGBTQ rights, and June being Pride Month among the reasons for launching the fundraiser.
“I’m raising money for GLAAD and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500,” Lovato wrote in a Facebook post. “Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.”

Lovato has done extensive work with both GLAAD and the LGBTQ community before. In 2016, she was honored with the Vanguard Award during the annual GLAAD Media Awards for her work with LGBTQ youth. The Grammy-nominated artist also served as a GLAAD ambassador on Spirit Day as part of GLAAD’s anti-bullying campaign.
The campaign has already raised more than $10,000 only one day after its launch, with its current goal sitting at $30,000. You can donate to Lovato’s fundraiser here.

OkCupid hits the streets at NYC Pride
Take a look at our favorite shots from LGBTQ celebration ?️?
On OkCupid you can identify however you want, regardless of what your gender expression or sexual orientation is. In fact, OkCupid was the first dating app to offer 22 gender options and 13 orientation options to choose from. And now with the brand-new ACLU profile badge, it’s even easier for OkCupid users to find dates who support everyone’s right to love whoever they want.
This past Sunday we took to the streets of Manhattan to celebrate that spirit of inclusivity with the LGBTQ community at the NYC Pride March. We were thrilled to have our weird, wild, and wonderful friends at House of Yes along for the ride.
It. Was. A. Party.
This float had everything: Giant puppets, acrobatics, and every color visible to the human eye.

GLAAD proposes bold new solution to protect LGBTQ Americans: “It’s time to amend the Constitution”
GLAAD proposes bold new solution to protect LGBTQ Americans: “It’s time to amend the Constitution”
GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today spotlighted the need for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that protects against discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis presented the vision in a guest post today on Advocate.com entitled “How to Stop the LGBT Rights Backslide.”
For more information and to voice support, visit: www.glaad.org/Constitution.
“At a time when LGBTQ rights and acceptance are rolling back at an alarming rate, setting our sights on enshrining LGBTQ equality in the U.S. Constitution is a new bar that we all need to reach for,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “It’s time to amend the Constitution. GLAAD will lead a national conversation around how the lack of federal protections for LGBTQ people leaves our community vulnerable to pervasive discrimination.”

— Sarah Kate Ellis (@sarahkateellis) June 27, 2018
Ellis announced plans for a multi-year public education campaign. The campaign will leverage news, entertainment, and social media to inform Americans about the need for federal LGBTQ protections in the wake of more than 75 political and policy attacks by the Trump Administration and over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures around country within the past three years.
Ellis continues:
“This will not be a short or easy road, but it is the only road that leads to full and undeniable protection. The only way to correct the baseline and cement LGBTQ legal gains without fear of slipping backwards is for the United States Congress to pass and the states to ratify an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that includes the welfare of all Americans, independent of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. An amendment to the Constitution is the permanent change that ends the rigor of court decisions and removes the formidable possibility that current or future Administrations can continue to chip away at LGBTQ progress.”
The rights of LGBTQ Americans will continuously be debated until civil rights are written into the fabric of this nation and liberty and justice for truly all Americans becomes enshrined in the Constitution.
— Sarah Kate Ellis (@sarahkateellis) June 27, 2018
Amendments to the U.S. Constitution must be passed by a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate and sent to the States for ratification. Proposed amendments must then be ratified by three-fourths of the states within a stipulated period of time to be added to the U.S. Constitution.
This vision for this builds on the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, which was introduced in the 1970s to grant equal rights to women but fell four states short of ratification.
In her Advocate.com guest post, Ellis explains:
“A previously proposed Equal Rights Amendment focused on gender equality and was nearly ratified in the 1970’s. The tenets of that legislation are still in need today and should be expanded to include all forms of sex discrimination, including against LGBTQ people.”
In the post, Ellis also calls attention to recent momentum for LGBTQ acceptance, but reinforces the simultaneous rollbacks and overall lack of federal protections to shield LGBTQ people from discrimination:
“The Supreme Court’s opinion in the Masterpiece case, which leaves the door open for businesses to turn away LGBTQ families by citing their religious beliefs, most recently spotlighted exactly why LGBTQ and allied groups need to turn our attention and resources towards taking equality over the Constitutional finish line.”

Human Rights Campaign Endorses Lauren Underwood for U.S. Congress
Human Rights Campaign Endorses Lauren Underwood for U.S. Congress
Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Lauren Underwood for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District.
“Lauren Underwood is the clear choice for Illinois voters who believe in justice, fairness and equality,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “She will fight for Illinois’ working families and champion every person’s right to live and work free from discrimination and harassment. HRC is proud to endorse her bid to represent the people of Illinois’ 14th District in Congress, and we look forward to working closely with her to move LGBTQ equality forward once elected.”
“This month we celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ community,” said Lauren Underwood. “The Human Rights Campaign is an organization that boldly fights for equality and I am proud to stand with HRC and have their endorsement. In Congress, I will uphold laws that protect all of us, because we are a better community when all of us can live freely and happily”
A longtime registered nurse and medical professional, Underwood has spent her career fighting for affordable and accessible health care. She is a strong champion of LGBTQ equality who supports marriage equality and the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights laws. She will be facing incumbent Rep. Randy Hultgren (R) in the general election. Hultgren has consistently received a zero on HRC’s congressional scorecard, which measures members’ of Congress support for LGBTQ equality.
