Demi Lovato Launches GLAAD Fundraiser on Facebook for Pride Month

Demi Lovato continues to show massive support for the LGBTQ community. On June 26, Lovato took to her Facebook page to officially kick start a pride fundraiser for GLAAD. Launching the campaign on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling for marriage equality, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer passed her original goal of $5,000 within hours of posting the fundraiser.

Lovato cited her support of the LGBTQ community, GLAAD’s extensive work for the LGBTQ rights, and June being Pride Month among the reasons for launching the fundraiser.

“I’m raising money for GLAAD and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500,” Lovato wrote in a Facebook post. “Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.”

Lovato has done extensive work with both GLAAD and the LGBTQ community before. In 2016, she was honored with the Vanguard Award during the annual GLAAD Media Awards for her work with LGBTQ youth. The Grammy-nominated artist also served as a GLAAD ambassador on Spirit Day as part of GLAAD’s anti-bullying campaign.

The campaign has already raised more than $10,000 only one day after its launch, with its current goal sitting at $30,000. You can donate to Lovato’s fundraiser here

OkCupid hits the streets at NYC Pride

Take a look at our favorite shots from LGBTQ celebration ?️‍?

On OkCupid you can identify however you want, regardless of what your gender expression or sexual orientation is. This past Sunday we took to the streets of Manhattan to celebrate that spirit of inclusivity with the LGBTQ community at the NYC Pride March. We were thrilled to have our weird, wild, and wonderful friends at House of Yes along for the ride.

GLAAD proposes bold new solution to protect LGBTQ Americans: “It’s time to amend the Constitution”

GLAAD proposes bold new solution to protect LGBTQ Americans: “It’s time to amend the Constitution”

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today spotlighted the need for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that protects against discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis presented the vision in a guest post today on Advocate.com entitled “How to Stop the LGBT Rights Backslide.”

For more information and to voice support, visit: www.glaad.org/Constitution.

“At a time when LGBTQ rights and acceptance are rolling back at an alarming rate, setting our sights on enshrining LGBTQ equality in the U.S. Constitution is a new bar that we all need to reach for,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “It’s time to amend the Constitution. GLAAD will lead a national conversation around how the lack of federal protections for LGBTQ people leaves our community vulnerable to pervasive discrimination.”

Ellis announced plans for a multi-year public education campaign. The campaign will leverage news, entertainment, and social media to inform Americans about the need for federal LGBTQ protections in the wake of more than 75 political and policy attacks by the Trump Administration and over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures around country within the past three years.

Ellis continues:

“This will not be a short or easy road, but it is the only road that leads to full and undeniable protection. The only way to correct the baseline and cement LGBTQ legal gains without fear of slipping backwards is for the United States Congress to pass and the states to ratify an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that includes the welfare of all Americans, independent of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. An amendment to the Constitution is the permanent change that ends the rigor of court decisions and removes the formidable possibility that current or future Administrations can continue to chip away at LGBTQ progress.”

The rights of LGBTQ Americans will continuously be debated until civil rights are written into the fabric of this nation and liberty and justice for truly all Americans becomes enshrined in the Constitution.

Amendments to the U.S. Constitution must be passed by a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate and sent to the States for ratification. Proposed amendments must then be ratified by three-fourths of the states within a stipulated period of time to be added to the U.S. Constitution.

This vision for this builds on the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, which was introduced in the 1970s to grant equal rights to women but fell four states short of ratification.

In her Advocate.com guest post, Ellis explains:

“A previously proposed Equal Rights Amendment focused on gender equality and was nearly ratified in the 1970’s. The tenets of that legislation are still in need today and should be expanded to include all forms of sex discrimination, including against LGBTQ people.”

In the post, Ellis also calls attention to recent momentum for LGBTQ acceptance, but reinforces the simultaneous rollbacks and overall lack of federal protections to shield LGBTQ people from discrimination:

“The Supreme Court’s opinion in the Masterpiece case, which leaves the door open for businesses to turn away LGBTQ families by citing their religious beliefs, most recently spotlighted exactly why LGBTQ and allied groups need to turn our attention and resources towards taking equality over the Constitutional finish line.”

Human Rights Campaign Endorses Lauren Underwood for U.S. Congress

Human Rights Campaign Endorses Lauren Underwood for U.S. Congress

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Lauren Underwood for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District.

“Lauren Underwood is the clear choice for Illinois voters who believe in justice, fairness and equality,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “She will fight for Illinois’ working families and champion every person’s right to live and work free from discrimination and harassment. HRC is proud to endorse her bid to represent the people of Illinois’ 14th District in Congress, and we look forward to working closely with her to move LGBTQ equality forward once elected.”

“This month we celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ community,” said Lauren Underwood. “The Human Rights Campaign is an organization that boldly fights for equality and I am proud to stand with HRC and have their endorsement. In Congress, I will uphold laws that protect all of us, because we are a better community when all of us can live freely and happily”

A longtime registered nurse and medical professional, Underwood has spent her career fighting for affordable and accessible health care. She is a strong champion of LGBTQ equality who supports marriage equality and the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights laws. She will be facing incumbent Rep. Randy Hultgren (R) in the general election. Hultgren has consistently received a zero on HRC’s congressional scorecard, which measures members’ of Congress support for LGBTQ equality.

Rep. Jared Polis, Who Could Become Country’s First Elected Gay Governor, Speaks After Primary Win: WATCH
Jared Polis gay

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) won his gubernatorial primary last night and will face Republican Walker Stapleton in the governor’s race in November. Paris would be the first gay man elected governor in the country should he win. He’s married with two children.

Said Polis: “I think it really gives Colorado an opportunity to stick a thumb in the eye of Mike Pence, whose view of America is not as inclusive as where America is today.”

Notes Vox: “Although former Gov. Jim McGreevey of New Jersey, a Democrat, made history by coming out as gay while in office in 2004, Polis would be the first openly gay man elected to a governor’s mansion. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown is also the nation’s first openly bisexual governor, as well as the first openly LGBT governor when taking office. Brown succeeded former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber when he resigned in 2015 and soon after won a special election in 2016.”
