Robert Mueller’s team has questioned a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin about large payments he made to Trump attorney Michael Cohen, and the Trump inaugural fund and campaign.

CNN reports: “Viktor Vekselberg, chairman of asset manager Renova Group, is an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, and last month the Trump administration placed him on a list of sanctioned Russians for activities including election interference. The purpose of the payments, which predate the sanctions, and the nature of the business relationship between Vekselberg and Cohen is unclear…The questions asked of Vekselberg suggest that Mueller investigators have been examining some of Cohen’s business relationships as part of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.”

The oligarchs questioned by the FBI were stopped and questioned at the airport earlier this year.

Moms For Equality: Sally Field on Why She’ll #FightLikeAMother for LGBTQ Equality

Moms For Equality: Sally Field on Why She’ll #FightLikeAMother for LGBTQ Equality

In honor of Mother’s Day, a star-studded lineup of Moms have joined HRC in advocating and standing up for their own kids and millions of LGBTQ youth across the country.

Today’s post featured below comes from Sally Field, who urges HRC members and supporters to protect young LGBTQ people.

There are three things I’m proudest of in my life … and their names are Peter, Eli and Sam. My remarkable sons.

As most parents will tell you, few things are as rewarding as seeing your child grow into the person they’re meant to be. Each of my boys had their own way of getting there, of course, but it was my Sam whose journey came with a few extra hurdles.

At 20, Sam came out proudly as a gay man: to us and to a world where some still hate you just for being different. Ten years later and that hate seems to have only gotten stronger.

But with you, we can help stop hate in its tracks.

That’s why I’m asking you to join me and all the other HRC Moms for Equality by becoming a member of the Human Rights Campaign before Mother’s Day.  Let’s #FightLikeAMother to protect this and future generations of young LGBTQ people.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ youth face homelessness. For many, it’s at the hands of their own parents. Others face higher rates of suicide than their peers and struggle with bullying and mental health.

Their crime? Living authentically.

No child should live in fear of revealing their sexuality or gender identity. It is just plain common sense — but it won’t change until people speak out. That’s why I’m raising my voice with HRC. Will you join me?

Whether you are LGBTQ yourself, a mother, a father, or just a great person with strong convictions about what’s fair and right, I hope I’ve convinced you to stand with HRC and all the Moms for Equality.

Please join HRC today and help ensure LGBTQ youth never have to suffer in silence.

Whether you’re a Mom for Equality, a parent, a friend or part of the LGBTQ community, we hope that you join HRC and snag a limited-edition ”Fight Like a Mother” t-shirt today.

HRC’s Welcoming Schools Honors Educator Kristen Scott for Teacher Appreciation Week

HRC’s Welcoming Schools Honors Educator Kristen Scott for Teacher Appreciation Week

Post submitted by Kimmie Fink, Welcoming Schools Consultant

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is highlighting the outstanding educators within our ranks. On Teacher Appreciation Day, we are proud to celebrate one special standout: Wisconsin fifth grade teacher Kristen Scott. As an ally to the LGBTQ community, an advocate for human rights and a champion of our program and her students, Scott embodies everything we stand for at Welcoming Schools.

Scott works at Nuestro Mundo Community School, a dual-language immersion school in Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). She has nurtured a classroom environment where children feel proud of their identities, creating events for students including a “Be Who You Are” party and her annual “Where I’m From” poetry slam. She has been instrumental in implementing the Welcoming Schools program at Nuestro Mundo — one of two MMSD schools to earn the Welcoming Schools Seal of Excellence this year.

“[Kristen Scott] consistently takes an intersectional approach, making sure that we are providing access to Welcoming Schools topics to Spanish-speaking families,” said Jennifer Herdina, MMSD Welcoming Schools lead. “Many families have expressed that they are now more understanding of the issues and supportive of the conversations and lessons that Maestra Scott is engaging in with her class.”

Scott has been recognized often for her exceptional commitment and work with students. In 2015, Scott was named Bilingual Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Association for Bilingual Education. She made Madison Magazine’s M List 2016, a “who’s who” of mentors and teachers making a substantial impact on local culture. Most recently, Scott earned the title Educator of the Year for 2018 by GSAFE, a local organization dedicated to creating LGBTQ-inclusive schools for youth and a proud partner of Welcoming Schools.

We are proud to call Scott one of our own. Teachers like Scott make our vision of schools where all children and youth across the country can thrive a reality. Teacher Appreciation Week is a wonderful opportunity to honor the educators who work with us creating welcoming and inclusive schools because they know it is right and best for their students.

HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is the nation’s premier professional development program providing training and resources to elementary school educators to:

  • Welcome diverse families;
  • Create LGBTQ and gender-inclusive schools;
  • Prevent bias-based bullying;
  • Support transgender and non-binary students.

ACCIDENT AUTOPSY. Uber self-driving car that killed pedestrian was tuned too far to account for false positives: ‘The car was travelling at 40mph (64km/h) in self-driving mode when it collided with 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg at about 10pm on 18 March. Herzberg was pushing a bicycle across the road outside of a crossing. She later died from her injuries. Although the car’s sensors detected Herzberg, its software which decides how it should react was tuned too far in favour of ignoring objects in its path which might be “false positives” (such as plastic bags), according to a report from the Information. This meant the modified Volvo XC90 did not react fast enough.”

Ahead of Mother’s Day, HRC Launches “Moms for Equality” Campaign Featuring Star-Studded Lineup

Ahead of Mother’s Day, HRC Launches “Moms for Equality” Campaign Featuring Star-Studded Lineup

HRC launched a new “Moms for Equality” campaign ahead of Mother’s Day, featuring a star-studded lineup urging their fellow moms and all parents and allies to join the fight for LGBTQ equality. Sally Field, Betty DeGeneres, Jodie Patterson, and Kelly Rippon all share their stories in the “Moms for Equality” campaign, opening up about how their LGBTQ kids have made them fierce advocates for equality. The membership campaign also features HRC President Chad Griffin’s mother Betty Hightower and HRC’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion Nicole Cozier.

“By joining HRC, these remarkable moms and advocates are standing up for their own kids and millions of LGBTQ youth across the country,” said Olivia Dalton, HRC Senior Vice President for Communications and Marketing. “Today, so many LGBTQ youth still face disproportionately high rates of bullying, anxiety and depression, and other challenges. And that’s why it’s so powerful to have moms and parents from all walks of life coming together to organize, advocate and lead our country in a more affirming, inclusive and supportive direction.”

HRC is offering limited edition “Fight Like A Mother” t-shirts to those who join the membership campaign through Mother’s Day.

“At 20, Sam came out proudly as a gay man: to us and to a world where some still hate you just for being different. Ten years later and that hate seems to have only gotten stronger,” says Sally Field in one of the HRC “Moms for Equality” campaign emails. “But with you, we can help stop hate in its tracks.”

“Like so many of you, Chad has never shied away from fighting for what’s right. From pushing marriage equality at the Supreme Court to his persistent activism and advocacy nationwide, he’s given his all to the fight for LGBTQ rights,” says Betty Hightower, mother of HRC President Chad Griffin. “I’m thrilled to stand by his side, today and always, as his mom and as one of HRC’s Moms for Equality.”

“It’s on us to change the world for these kids and make it a better place. Just like my Ellen did 21 years ago and continues to do to this day,” says Betty DeGeneres, mother of Ellen DeGeneres. “I’m a proud Mom for Equality and a longtime member of HRC.”

“Everyone, LGBTQ or otherwise, should get to live as freely as Adam does –– and, as one of HRC’s Moms for Equality, I’m committed to making that happen,” says Kelly Rippon, mother of Adam Rippon. “This whole campaign has become such a family affair. All of us are in this fight for LGBTQ equality for Adam, of course, but also for all those young people like him who haven’t had an easy time openly being themselves. They need allies to support them, now more than ever!”

“As a mom, I’ve always wanted to fix things. But, as I soon realized, there wasn’t anything about Penelope that needed fixing. He, like every transgender child, was simply announcing to me and to the world how he truly saw himself. He was boldly claiming his identity,” says Jodie Patterson, who was recently named one of “The 20 Most Influential Moms of 2018” by Family Circle magazine and is also a member of the HRC Parents for Transgender Equality Council. “I joined the fight for transgender equality that very day and I’m here, seven years later, to keep that fight going as one of HRC’s Moms for Equality!”

“Kindness, acceptance and love. Those are the traits my mom and my grandmothers built into our family. When I became a mom myself, I made sure to weave those same traits into mine, and as a staff member at HRC, I like to think we’re weaving those traits into the world around us, too,” says HRC Director of Diversity Nicole Cozier. “This Mother’s Day, on behalf of HRC, my wife and I want to give thanks to all the Moms For Equality who are doing their part to make life better for LGBTQ people.”
