Moms For Equality: Nicole Cozier on Why LGBTQ Youth Deserve to be Their Most Authentic Self

In honor of Mother’s Day, a star-studded lineup of Moms have joined HRC in advocating and standing up for their own kids and millions of LGBTQ youth across the country.

Today’s post featured below comes from HRC Director of Diversity Nicole Cozier, who urges HRC members and supporters to protect young LGBTQ people.

Kindness, acceptance and love.

Those are the traits my mom and my grandmothers built into our family. When I became a mom myself, I made sure to weave those same traits into mine … and as a staff member at HRC, I like to think we’re weaving those traits into the world around us, too.

This Mother’s Day, on behalf of HRC, my wife and I want to give thanks to Sally Field, Betty Hightower, Jodie Patterson, Betty DeGeneres and all the Moms for Equality who have been part of this campaign …

And offer you this special “Fight Like a Mother” t-shirt when you become an HRC member today!

It’s perfect for your mom … your grandma … your friends and chosen family … your partner … or your own superhero self!

I’m actually wearing my tee right now! Just seeing it is a reminder of my commitment to this fight for equality: today, tomorrow and for generations to come. All kids, my little one included, deserve to live, love and lead as their most authentic selves — we all deserve that — and, with HRC’s work (fueled by you), I know we can get there.

Whether you’re part of the LGBTQ community or simply care about LGBTQ people, I’m asking you personally to help build a fairer and more equal world for everyone! Become an HRC member and claim your “Fight Like A Mother” shirt today — we need you!

From all us Moms for Equality to the moms in your life, enjoy Mother’s Day! Thank you for believing in a better tomorrow for LGBTQ people.

Whether you’re a Mom for Equality, a parent, a friend or part of the LGBTQ community, we hope that you join HRC and snag a limited-edition ”Fight Like a Mother” t-shirt today.

Gracias Mamá/Thank You Mom!

Gracias Mamá/Thank You Mom!

The support of our families can be the foundation for everything we do. Lots of LGBTQ Latinx familia are taking the opportunity this weekend to thank their beautiful mamis, including Jorge Gutierrez (pictured), executive director of Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, a national LGBTQ Latinx grassroots organization that also provides family acceptance organizing and support.

For many families, acceptance is a journey, and one we’re happy to support. GLAAD offers a listing of resources for families, in English and Spanish.

Moms, thank you for all of your sacrifices, the hard work, the long nights, the struggles, all the acceptance, all the bravery, and all the love. Thank you for listening and understanding. Thank you for loving us for who we are.

HRC Responds to Rollback of Obama-Era Guidance That Protects Safety of Trans Prisoners

HRC Responds to Rollback of Obama-Era Guidance That Protects Safety of Trans Prisoners

HRC responded to news that the Trump-Pence administration has ordered the Bureau of Prisons to use “biological sex” in determining how transgender prisoners are assigned housing, putting them at significant risk of sexual abuse, assault, and other types of discrimination.

“The Obama Administration put this guidance into place after an extensive review to develop workable and reasonable procedures that would protect some of the most vulnerable people in our prison system,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “The decision to disregard a  transgender person’s gender identity is harmful and disrespectful. This unconscionable decision ignores medical expertise and  defies common sense. Transgender people under the control of the Bureau of Prisons will face greater risk of violence and discrimination.”

The Obama Administration issued a guidance memo for the Bureau of Prisons that provided instruction on intake and supervision of transgender inmates, including medical treatment, housing guidelines, and use of pronouns. It also noted that transgender inmates are at “increased risk of suicide, mental health issues and victimization.” The memo was largely based on regulations first implemented in 2012. The Trump-Pence Administration’s move also conflicts with protections under the Prison Rape Elimination Act.

Mike Pence to Speak at College That Urged the ‘Destruction of Same-Sex Marriage’

Mike Pence to Speak at College That Urged the ‘Destruction of Same-Sex Marriage’

HRC responded to news that Vice President Mike Pence’s will speak on Saturday at Hillsdale College, which has one of the worst reputations in the country for the welfare of LGBTQ students. Hillsdale College has been consistently rated by the Princeton Review as one of the worst colleges in the country for LGBTQ students. In 2015, an official at the college made national headlines when they sent an institution-wide e-mail asking faculty, students, athletic staff, and alumni to pray that “evil be revealed and destroyed” in regards to same-sex marriage in the United States.

“It tells you a lot about who Mike Pence really is that he’s elevating and celebrating an institution like Hillsdale College, with its troubling history of rejecting its LGBTQ students,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “The college is consistently ranked among the worst for LGBTQ students and has been openly hostile to LGBTQ people. It tells you a lot about who Mike Pence really is that he is elevating and celebrating an institution like Hillsdale.”

HRC recently released a report — “The Real Mike Pence” — detailing Pence’s history of attacking LGBTQ people in an effort to expose his dangerous record to the world. The report is accompanied by a site that highlights the most egregious anti-LGBTQ stains of his past. Pence has a long track record of attacking LGBTQ people, from supporting a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality, to opposing the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and federal hate crimes legislation, to driving forward the administration’s despicable ban on transgender service members, which is now being litigated in the courts.

LET IT GO. The Broadway version.

CAITLYN JENNER. The goods on her address to Parliament on diversity, and Trump.

KIRSTJEN NIELSEN. Homeland Security secretary almost resigned after tirade from Trump: “Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, told colleagues she was close to resigning after President Trump berated her on Wednesday in front of the entire cabinet for what he said was her failure to adequately secure the nation’s borders, according to several current and former officials familiar with the episode. Ms. Nielsen, who is a protégée of John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, has drafted a resignation letter but has not submitted it, according to two of the people.”

eric schneidermanERIC SCHNEIDERMAN. Michael Cohen and Trump were informed of sexual assault allegations against the former NY Attorney General in 2013. “Trump’s potential knowledge of allegations against Schneiderman haven’t previously been dislosed, although the men have publicly feuded over Trump’s business practices. Schneiderman sought to sue Trump University in state court in 2012, and filed a complaint the next year in federal court, claiming the for-profit school defrauded students.”

MAGGIE HABERMAN. On Trump’s threat to revoke press credentials: “First of all, if cameras weren’t allowed into the White House, the person who would be saddest is Donald Trump,” she said, adding that “there is nothing he loves more than media attention.”

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION. Nobody wants it: “Most of the cities that have turned down the RNC are Democratic cities,” said Evan Siegfried, a New York-based Republican strategist. “Their leaders do not want to suffer blowback with their residents for hosting Trump and neither do they want to have local business owners angry because protestors smashed their store windows.”

massive great white sharkDUKE ELLINGTON. Sharks like jazz: “The study that trained sharks to associate music with food rewards learned they were not the aggressive flesh-crunching monsters of the Jaws movies. Scientists discovered intelligent, sensitive creatures who responded well to training and showed a preference for the sophisticated jazz sounds associated with stars such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis.”

ANYWHERE. Nick Jonas has a new track with DJ Mustard.

ROBOT FUTURE OF THE DAY. Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, running.

NEW TUNE OF THE DAY. Years & Years “Over Me”. “This is a song about trying to stay friends with an ex. Spoiler alert – it doesn’t often work. In fact, in my experience, the relationship often ends up ruined. ‘If You’re Over Me’ is about the emotional torture that ensues – meeting up and making out, then breaking up all over again, then making out some more.” – Olly Alexander
