HRC Responds to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher’s Endorsement of Discrimination in Housing

HRC responded to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher’s comments to a group of Realtors last week, during which he reportedly asserted that homeowners should have the right to refuse to sell their property to LGBTQ people.

In a meeting with the Orange County Association of Realtors, Rohrabacher reportedly said: “Every homeowner should be able to make a decision not to sell their home to someone (if) they don’t agree with their lifestyle. We’ve drawn a line on racism, but I don’t think we should extend that line. A homeowner should not be required to be in business with someone they think is doing something that is immoral.”

“It is unconscionable that in 2018 that Dana Rohrabacher believes LGBTQ people do not deserve legal protections from housing discrimination. He could not be more out of touch with everyday Americans and  his own constituents,” said David Stacy, HRC Government Affairs Director. “More than 70 percent of voters believe that every American should be able to buy or rent a home regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Speaker Ryan, who has supported employment non-discrimination protections in the past, should make clear that House Republicans reject Rohrabacher’s comments and schedule a hearing on LGBTQ housing discrimination. We thank the National Association of REALTORs for withdrawing their endorsement of Rohrabacher and the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professionals for their work to ensure  that he is held accountable for his discriminatory comments..”

Following a strong protest by the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professionals (NAGLREP), the National Association of Realtors (NAP) withdrew its endorsement of Rohrabacher, and rescinded its recommendation that members send campaign contributions to him, citing his comments as contrary to their code of ethics.

The Human Rights Campaign continues to call for passage of the Equality Act, which provides basic protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, access to public spaces, housing, education, jury service, credit and federal funding.

Samantha Bee sat down with Jimmy Kimmel last night and reminisced about interviewing Kellyanne Conway several times for The Daily Show about 10 years ago.

Kimmel played a clip of one of the interviews, in which Bee asked Conway about how the GOP is “packaged:”

Asked Bee: “It’s like the Republican Party is a sh*t sandwich. How do you get Americans to eat the sandwich?”

Replied Conway: “Well, you dip it in chocolate and you say it has no calories.”

So, yeah, nothing has changed.

Added Bee: “She was on The Daily Show many, many times in the years that I was there. And it got to the point where…producers were like, ‘Uh, should we call Kellyanne? She’ll say anything that we want her to.’ And they were like, ‘Well, we kinda use her too much. Let’s not call Kellyanne this time.’ Because even back then, we had a sense that she was very thirsty.”

ICYMI — “BETSY DEVOS, HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?” — HRC PROJECTS MESSAGE ON U.S. DEPT. OF EDUCATION BUILDING IN WASH., D.C.: HRC and artist Robin Bell (@bellvisuals) projected a message to Education Secretary DeVos featuring findings from HRC’s recent groundbreaking  survey of 12,000 LGBTQ teens. The survey, conducted in partnership with the University of Connecticut, found that LGBTQ teenagers are not only experiencing heartbreaking levels of stress, anxiety and rejection, but also overwhelmingly feel unsafe in their own schools. The projection included a survey finding that 95 percent of LGBTQ teens report trouble getting to sleep at night, and asked DeVos, “how do you sleep at night?” More from HRC and NewNowNext.

HRC JOINS CALL FOR PEACE CORPS TO END DISMISSALS OF VOLUNTEERS NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH HIV: According to recent media reports, two Peace Corps volunteers were informed that their assignments would be terminated as a result of their recent HIV diagnosis.  Worryingly, reports have also emerged of Peace Corps officials denying volunteers’ requests for PrEP.  “These policies are outdated and harmful to Peace Corps volunteers living with HIV or seeking effective prevention tools,” said Peter Cruz, associate director of HRC’s HIV and Health Equity Program. “We join fellow HIV advocates in asking the Peace Corps to act quickly to modernize their HIV policies and practices.” More from HRC.

The day Dallas went to Nashville

The day Dallas went to Nashville

People know Matt Dallas and Blue Hamilton for a lot of things. Matt for being the face of the hit show Kyle XY. Blue for going from music executive to musician. The duo is now traveling the globe, sharing out dad moments, and working toward a single goal wherever they go. That goal? As their son says (or sings) at the start of their videos—peace to the world. But you’ll know them as the reason you went on an adventure of your own this summer.

Image of Matt Dallas and Blue Hamilton.

That’s because they’ve arrived in Nashville, Tennessee—a.k.a. the Music City. Where white jackets, black trims, sweet serenades, and the bright lights of the Grand Ole Opry fill the nights. And where horseback rides through rolling hills under endless skies fill the days. If that sounds like an overly romantic description to you, come along for a ride to see it’s not.

In one of the pair’s longest videos, they made room for all the must-sees and must-tastes of Tennessee. They went way beyond the honkytonks. From a feast of slow-roasted, southern barbecue to a tour of a 350-acre organic farm. You’ll see some great views. Meet some great horses. And get pressured into adding a 10-gallon hat into your wardrobe rotation.

The downside of a summer adventure like this one? Loved ones might not be able to come with. Matt and Blue had the same concern. So they ended up using Skype to make sure friends and family didn’t miss out. Are you starting to think that summer vacation shouldn’t just be for kids? Then saddle up and see what makes Nashville an iconic place by watching Matt and Blue’s video of their road trip to Nashville. And then follow them on Instagram and Twitter to see all the “Insta-worthy” moments from their trip or to say hello.

You can also watch a new YouTube of Matt and Blue’s adventures every Tuesday.

“I am thrilled to welcome my wonderful and dear friend Tanya Tucker to the show. All her kids call me ‘Uncle Ty,’” said Herndon. “I have known Tanya’s heart for many years. She is truly one of the most talented, kind and generous souls on the planet. She is adored by all of us in country music, and we’ll all be watching to learn a little something about how it’s done.”

Tanya Tucker is a global superstar, who has been amassing hits since she burst onto the country music scene at the age of 13 with “Delta Dawn.” Since then, she has racked up a slew of awards including two CMAs, two ACMs, three CMT awards and ten GRAMMY® nominations. The Academy of Country Music also honored Tanya with the Cliffie Stone Icon Award during the 10th Annual ACM Honors™.

All inclusive sales of Tanya’s singles, albums, hits collections and digital downloads have topped 25 million records worldwide. — Cale Dodds (@CaleDodds) May 14, 2018

“My first ‘forty-five’ growing up in South Carolina was Tanya Tucker’s ‘Delta Dawn,’ so I have been a fan for a long time,” said Zeke Stokes, GLAAD’s Vice President of Programs and Executive Producer of the 2018 Concert for Love & Acceptance. “I’m so excited that we have reached a time when the country music community is standing up for love and acceptance for LGBTQ people, and young children everywhere who feel different can know that we’re all on their side.”

The inaugural Concert for Love and Acceptance was held in 2015 to kick off GLAAD’s Southern Stories Tour and the second iteration was held in 2017. The event has been supported by artists like Reba McEntire, and Dan + Shay, with a lineup of performances that has included Chris Carmack, Crystal Gayle, Billy Gilman, Dana Goldberg, Kree Harrison, Mickey Guyton, Levi Hummon, Runaway June, Ryan Kinder, Meghan Lindsey, Street Corner Symphony, and Trent Harmon. GLAAD’s Southern Stories initiative tells the stories of LGBTQ people and their allies in the South to create a cultural shift towards LGBTQ acceptance and understanding in the region.

In recent years, country music has become a more affirming environment for the LGBTQ community with chart toppers like Luke Bryan’s “Most People are Good” following in the footsteps of Garth Brooks, Kasey Musgraves, and The Dixie Chicks sharing inclusive messages through their lyrics. In January 2017, CMT host Cody Alan came out publicly in People magazine with the help of GLAAD and received an outpouring of support and love from the country music community and his fans. Stars like Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, and Dierks Bentley all voiced their support on social media. Ty Herndon, a Grammy nominated and Dove Award winning artist with album sales of more than 4 million, was the first major male country music star to come out, when he shared his story with the world in 2014.

The 2018 Concert for Love and Acceptance corporate partners include presenting partners CMT, Ketel One Family-Made Vodka and community partners Nissan and The Weissmann Group.

George Takei’s Accuser Fabricated Elements of Story, Admits Sexual Assault May Not Have Happened

George Takei’s Accuser Fabricated Elements of Story, Admits Sexual Assault May Not Have Happened
George Takei russian bots

In November, actor George Takei denied sexual assault allegations made by Scott Brunton, a former model who says Takei sexually assaulted him in 1981.

Brunton claimed he fell unconscious at Takei’s apartment after having a couple drinks and when he woke up his pants were around his ankles, Takei was groping him and trying to get his underwear off. The accusations, which came as a flurry of Hollywood and public figures were brought down by similar allegations, prompted a public pillorying of Takei, who has always denied them.

Now, Takei’s accuser has withdrawn many of the allegations during a lengthy investigation by the New York Observer‘s Shane Snow, who tracked how Brunton changed and added to his story over time, and also revealed that many of the claims, such as possession of a “date rape” drug, would have been impossible because such drugs did not exist in 1981 when the alleged assault took place.

Takei has always maintained that the events described by Brunton did not occur, and is vindicated by Snow’s investigation, which you can read here.

At the time, Takei also said that Russian bots were amplifying the accusations against him.
