HRC Responds to AG Schimel’s Appearance at the Alliance Defending Freedom Conference
HRC responded to reports that Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel accepted thousands of dollars from the notoriously anti-LGBTQ Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to speak at the group’s recent conference in California.
“As Wisconsin Attorney General, Brad Schimel has repeatedly used his power to roll back our progress and undermine the rights and freedom of LGBTQ Wisconsinites,” said HRC Wisconsin State Manager Wendy Strout. “From urging the Supreme Court of the United States to grant a potentially sweeping license to discrimnate against LGBTQ people, to opposing protections for LGBTQ youth facing discrimination and bullying in our schools, Schimel proved long before appearing at ADF’s conference that he is unfit to be attorney general and cannot represent all Wisconsinites equally and fairly. Schimel must immediately release the transcripts from his speech to ADF and donate the money he received for the appearance to a charitable organization in Wisconsin working to advance the safety and well-being of Wisconsin’s LGBTQ youth. ”

HRC Calls for Senate to Reject Nomination of Michael Brennan
Today, HRC called for the U.S. Senate to reject the nomination of Michael Brennan following the Senate Republicans’ troubling dismissal of the “blue slip” tradition.
“To ignore the blue slip tradition and silence the voice of Senator Baldwin and the millions of Wisconites she represents is not only disrespectful, but also weakens the legislative branch and strengthens the executive branch at a time when checks and balances are needed more than ever,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “We are disappointed that Senate Republicans are once again willing to ignore long-standing Senate norms to advance President Trump’s lifetime appointments of nominees with extreme ideological judicial philosophies. This is a sad day for the U.S. Senate.”
For the past 100 years, the Senate Judiciary Committee has typically waited to receive two positive blue slips from home-state senators before commencing a confirmation hearing on behalf of a proposed judge at either the District Court or Court of Appeals level. When respected, the blue slip process ensures that home-state senators are able to properly research judicial nominees and provide feedback.
Brennan himself wrote an editorial endorsing the blue slip process in 2011 after Senator Ron Johnson refused to return his blue slip for a President Obama nominee to the Seventh Circuit. In Brennan’s own words, to bypass the blue slip process would be “a purely partisan move” that would exclude not only Sen. Johnson, but the millions of citizens who voted for him.

WEST VIRGINIA. Republicans relieved as Blankenship loses: “A night Republicans feared would end in disaster in at least one state instead produced Senate nominees that party leaders are pleased to run against three vulnerable Democratic senators in November’s midterm elections. In West Virginia, Don Blankenship — the ex-convict and coal baron who had taken aim at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s “China family,” in a reference to his wife and in-laws’ heritage — finished third behind Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who CNN has projected will win, and Rep. Cynthia Nixon Resurrects 1977 Ed Koch Smear, Flips It: ‘Vote for the Homo, Not for the Cuomo’
Cynthia Nixon appeared at the 118th annual Legislative Correspondents Association show Tuesday and resurrected an infamous homophobic slogan that appeared in a flyer touting her opponent Andrew Cuomo’s father in his failed run against NYC Mayor Ed Koch in 1977.
Nixon flipped the slogan “Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo” to apply to her race for New York governor: “Vote for the homo, not for the Cuomo.”
“Andrew Cuomo is known for dirty politics but I have to give credit where it’s due,” Nixon told the crowd. “His history of cutthroat campaigns, helped inspire my campaign’s new slogan.” …
“His performance as a progressive hasn’t been very convincing of late — you might say he is an unqualified thespian,” Nixon quipped, playing off the comments made by Cuomo supporter Christine Quinn that Nixon was an “unqualified lesbian.”

This Saturday, May 12, HRC will honor actor Nick Robinson with the organization’s Ally for Equality Award at the 13th Annual HRC Las Vegas Gala at ARIA Resort & Casino.
Among his many celebrated roles, Robinson recently starred as the title character of the revolutionary film “Love, Simon,” which was adapted from a groundbreaking young adult novel, “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli, about a closeted gay high school student who’s blackmailed into revealing his true identity before he’s ready. The first major studio film to be centered on a gay teenage romance, “Love, Simon” and Robinson’s critically-acclaimed portrayal of the conflicted Simon Spier have provided LGBTQ youth and adults with groundbreaking representation on the big screen for a global audience. The HRC Ally for Equality Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who use their voice and publicly stand up for the LGBTQ community.
Centered on the call to “RISE: Rally. Ignite. Support. Empower,” the 2018 HRC Las Vegas Gala will bring together the most dynamic philanthropic members and community leaders in the Las Vegas and LGBTQ communities. This year’s honorees include Bob Boughner, senior partner at Global Market Advisors, with the Equality Award; trailblazing community leaders and advocates, Jamie and Judy Dahlem with the Community Leadership Award; and FOX5’s Emmy Award-winning news anchor Monica O. Jackson with the Ally Award.
Tickets for the black-tie optional event are on sale now starting at $250 for general admission, $275 for VIP. Table sponsorships start at $2,500 for ten seats. All tickets can be purchased at www.hrc.org/lasvegasgala.

Kish Foundation, with Supporting Sponsors Dignity Health, Las Vegas Sands Corp., PDQ Printers, and Wells Fargo.
Community members and corporations interested in sponsorship, table purchases, donating to the silent auction or volunteering can contact the host committee at [email protected].
In July 2017, HRC announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The campaign is the biggest strategic expansion in the organization’s 38-year history and will include significant investments in Nevada.
Denver Mayor’s Son Calls Police Officer ‘F—king Fa—ot’ During Traffic Stop: ‘I’m About to Get You Fired’ – WATCH
Jordan Hancock, the 22-year-old son of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, was captured calling an officer a “f—king fa—ot” during a traffic stop in a bodycam video that was leaked to the press.
ABC7 Denver reports: ‘The video clip sent to Contact7 Investigates by an anonymous source is only about 20 seconds long and ends with 22-year-old Hancock driving away. Denver7 requested the full video from Aurora police but the request was declined. Denver7 has learned that after requesting a copy of Jordan Hancock’s ticket and the body camera video, the Aurora Police Department alerted the office of Denver’s mayor. APD said it notified Mayor Hancock’s office as a “courtesy.” A traffic ticket issued to Jordan Hancock says he was driving 65 miles an hour in a 40 miles per hour zone. In the ticket, the officer wrote, “Attitude very poor-see video.”’
Hancock issued a statement on Twitter: “We’ve addressed our son’s behavior at a traffic stop w/him. He’s apologized to the officer. While we don’t support nor condone his inexcusable actions & words, we love our son dearly & will work w/him to turn a personal mistake into a valuable lesson for himself & the community.”
