RIP. The poet J.D. McClatchy has died: “His death, from cancer — an illness that had been grist for poems in recent years — was announced by Random House. The author of eight volumes of poetry, Mr. McClatchy was considered one of the country’s foremost men of letters. He was also a prolific editor, anthologist, translator and critic, as well as the author of a string of acclaimed opera librettos, among them “Our Town,” for Ned Rorem’s setting of Thornton Wilder’s enduring drama of village life, and the Metropolitan Opera’s condensed English-language production of Mozart’s “Magic Flute,” designed by Julie Taymor.”
KEVIN MCCARTHY. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) laughably claims Trump isn’t thinking at all about Robert Mueller. “You know what, I see him in all these different natures,” he replied. “This man focuses just on the work.”
YIKES. I downloaded the information Facebook has on me.
ROGER STONE. Fire Sessions and Rosenstein, not Mueller: “I’m not recommending the firing of Mr. Mueller, but I am recommending a housecleaning at his Justice Department.”
HONG KONG. Banks and law firms join forces on behalf of British lesbian: “Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Credit Suisse Group AG and Nomura Holdings Inc. are among 15 financial institutions that have filed an application to intervene in the case of a woman — named in court documents as QT — who sued after the government rejected her application to reside in Hong Kong as a dependent of her same-sex partner. Hong Kong’s highest court is now considering an appeal filed by the government after a court ruled in favor of QT in September.”
RETIRED. Hurricane names Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate.

HAWAII. House passes ban on gay conversion therapy for minors: ‘House lawmakers added amendments to the bill to clarify its intent — that banning “sexual orientation change efforts” include attempts to alter a person’s gender identity, gender expression, or gender-nonconforming behaviors. The amendments also specifically identify which therapists, counselors, or health professionals are prohibited from engaging in conversion therapy. For example, if a person is a licensed therapist or mental health professional but is acting in a role as a spiritual or religious advisor — and not in a professional capacity — they will not be threatened with discipline or the loss of their license.
ILLINOIS. Lawmakers advance bill requiring schools to teach LGBT history: “The Senate Education committee endorsed the measure 8-2 on Tuesday after a House committee approved a nearly identical version of the plan. If enacted, Illinois would become just the second state to approve an LGBT inclusive curriculum.”
BERMUDA. Gay tourism chief begs people not to boycott: “As a gay Bermudian, I feel pretty lucky to have been born here. I would not have moved back to Bermuda if I was not convinced it was a welcoming place where we can openly be ourselves. For that matter, I would not have moved back if Bermuda did not have immigration rights for my same-sex partner.”
VERSACE. Madonna was one of the first at the Versace mansion after Gianni was shot: ‘At the time, Madonna had an expansive house on the Miami mainland, and was a frequent guest at the Versace mansion. It would not have been a stretch to imagine her stopping work on the album upon getting news of a close friend’s death and flying to Miami. But how would she have gotten into the home without anyone knowing until now? One of the things the show did get correct is that it was a media circus outside of Casa Casuarina following the murder. Yet the scene in which Donatella Versace walks into the house through the front doors at the main steps was complete fiction: The home had far more private entrances in the back. It’s likely Madonna was able to sneak in, and if someone had found out then, we all would have known about it by now. ‘
HARD CIDER. New ‘Kinder Cider’ benefits LGBT equality.

Alabama Senator Doug Jones on His Gay Son’s Influence, Instagram, and Coming Out
Alabama Senator Doug Jones on Tuesday became the 46th co-sponsor of the Equality Act, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to current civil rights laws.
In a new meeting with GLASS (Gays, Lesbians & Allies Senate Staff) attended by the Washington Blade, Jones talked about his commitment to LGBT equality, which helped him win the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions.
Jones called the Equality Act “very, very important” though he admitted the bill’s chances in the current Congress were slim: “If that will happen, it will rank right up there with the Obergefell decision. I’m a co-sponsor of that. I’d like to see it happen this Congress. I doubt it will.”
Jones also talked about the importance of data collection on hate crimes.
He also was asked about his gay son, a student at Colorado State University whose Instagram account gained a following during Jones’s run for Senate.
Carson Jones / Instagram
“We’ve all seen it,” quipped Jones of the account, which features the occasional shirtless selfie, along with photos of animals (he’s a zookeeper), and his travels.
Jones talked about the influence his son has had on his views: “Has it affected me? Absolutely. Everything affects you, but obviously a child affects you more than anything else. I’m happy to do that, I’m happy to be there to defend him — when he can be defended, as we always say, when he can be defended.”
Jones added that other experiences such as “a probate judge in Jefferson County whom we defended when Roy Moore tried to shut him down giving marriage licenses” have also affected him.
The Washington Blade also asked Jones about the experience of having Carson come out to him, if there’s been a shift in LGBT rights attitudes in Alabama, and the transgender military ban. Check out the rest of Chris Johnson’s interview HERE.

Confirmation Hearing for Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State: WATCH LIVE
Confirmation Hearing for Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State: WATCH LIVE
CIA Director Mike Pompeo appears in hearings at 10 am before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding his nomination to Secretary of State.
LGBT rights groups have blasted the nomination.
Said Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin: “Mike Pompeo’s longstanding opposition to LGBTQ equality makes him a reckless choice to lead our nation’s diplomatic efforts. The decision to nominate anti-LGBTQ Mike Pompeo could have serious consequences for the United States and LGBTQ people around the globe. The State Department has a crucial role to play in advancing human rights — a role which was already rapidly declining under Tillerson. This decision has the potential to make a dire situation even worse. Pompeo does not deserve to be confirmed.”
HRC adds: “Pompeo’s attacks on LGBTQ equality are long and well-documented: he opposes marriage equality, and, as a member of Congress, co-sponsored legislation to allow states to not recognize same-sex marriage and to allow businesses and organizations using taxpayer dollars a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people. Equally as troubling, his political career has been funded by anti-LGBTQ hate groups, including the Family Research Council.”
GLAAD keeps a list of Pompeo’s anti-LGBT actions, and it’s not brief.

TODAY — SENATORS URGED TO REJECT ANTI-LGBTQ MIKE POMPEO AS SECSTATE: Pompeo’s attacks on LGBTQ equality are long and well-documented: he opposes marriage equality, and, as a member of Congress, co-sponsored legislation to allow states to not recognize same-sex marriage and to allow businesses and organizations using taxpayer dollars a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people. Equally as troubling, his political career has been funded by anti-LGBTQ hate groups, including the Family Research Council. More from HRC and ABC.
HRC PRESIDENT CHAD GRIFFIN (@CHADHGRIFFIN) ON THE GROUND IN OK FIGHTING DISCRIMINATORY FOSTER CARE & ADOPTION BILL: SB 1140, a license to discriminate in child welfare services bill that passed the Oklahoma Senate, passed out of the House Judiciary Committee yesterday. The bill would make it harder for kids to find foster and adoptive families by allowing child welfare providers to refuse to work with LGBTQ individuals, same-sex families, or other qualified prospective parents who do not share all the tenets of the provider’s faith. HRC held a press conference with Freedom Oklahoma and other advocates to outline the harms this bill would cause, and to encourage Oklahomans to contact their representatives and voice their opposition to the measure. SENATOR DOUG JONES’S (D-AL) CONTINUED SUPPORT OF LGBTQ EQUALITY: During a meeting with the Senate LGBTQ staffers group, Jones affirmed his support of transgender service members, saying, “I think people who are willing to serve and are fit to serve, physically and mentally, they should be allowed to serve. Period.” More from Chris Johnson (@chrisjohnson82) at Washington Blade.
HRC JOINS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MARKING HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY: “Today, we honor the millions of lives lost in one of the darkest and most inhumane chapters in all of human history,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “As we remember the more than six million Jews, LGBTQ people, religious and other minorities and people with disabilities murdered and oppressed by the Nazi regime, we must recommit ourselves to standing against anti-Semitism, despotism and bigotry in all of its forms, whether here at home or around the world.” More from HRC.
“HE MAY HAVE LIVED” — A KANSAS CHILD WELFARE ADVOCATE WRITES MOVINGLY ABOUT NEED TO REJECT DISCRIMINATORY BILL: Kansas legislators are considering a measure that could create a license to discriminate for taxpayer-funded child placement agencies to refuse to place children with LGBTQ foster or adoptive parents, single parents or any parents who don’t share all the tenets of the agency’s faith. “When I heard about this bill, my mind went back to that awful, awful night. A child with a future ahead of him was dead because he was not loved for who he was,” writes Lori Ross, CEO of FosterAdopt Connect, about an LGBTQ youth who died by suicide because he was not accepted by his foster family. “I can’t help but think: Had he been placed with a family that looked like the future he wanted — full of love and light — he may have lived.” More from The Kansas City Star.
- Ross’s agency has achieved a leadership status with HRC’s All Children – All Families program.
If Kansas passes legislation granting child welfare agencies a license to discriminate against LGBTQ prospective parents, those who will suffer the most are the children in need of a loving home. Must-read from @fosteradopt_org CEO Lori Ross: t.co/aXMxetnmC3

BUH-BYE PAUL RYAN: Yesterday, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced he won’t be seeking re-election. Said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy, “From voting to ban marriage equality in every state to voting against the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, Ryan has stood on the wrong side of history far too many times. Ryan could have used his speakership to move his caucus to reflect the views of the vast majority of Americans who are committed to advancing equality for every American — including LGBTQ people. He didn’t.” More from Washington Blade.

HRC Joins International Community to Commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day
Today, HRC joined the international community to honor the six million Jews murdered and millions of others victimized, including members of the LGBTQ community, under Nazi Germany before and during World War II.
“Today, we honor the millions of lives lost in one of the darkest and most inhumane chapters in all of human history,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “More than seven decades since the liberation of Nazi concentration and death camps, the horrors of the Holocaust continue to haunt our world in the lives cut short, the dreams unfulfilled and in the enduring pain of those who survived. As we remember the more than six million Jews, LGBTQ people, religious and other minorities and people with disabilities murdered and oppressed by the Nazi regime, we must recommit ourselves to standing against anti-Semitism, despotism and bigotry in all of its forms, whether here at home or around the world.”
