Oklahoma House committee advances anti-LGBTQ senate bill 1140

GLAAD is calling on Oklahoma lawmakers to reject SB 1140, which targets LGBTQ families and youth

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following statement after lawmakers in the Oklahoma House Judiciary Committee advanced Senate Bill 1140. This anti-LGBTQ bill would allow adoption and foster care agencies to cite religion as a reason to discriminate and turn away qualified LGBTQ couples and refuse to work with LGBTQ youth in need of a home.

“This bill is heartless and un-American. No qualified parent should be turned away from adoption or foster agencies simply because they are LGBTQ,” said Zeke Stokes, Vice President of Programs of GLAAD. “The Oklahoma House must reject this attempt to write anti-LGBTQ discrimination into law at the expense of the state’s youth in need of loving and supportive homes.”

This bill is part of a disturbing trend of discriminatory legislation attacking LGBTQ families across the county. If SB 1140 passes, Oklahoma would become the eighth state to pass legislation targeting LGBTQ adoptive and foster families alongside Alabama, North Dakota, South Dakota, Virginia, Mississippi, Michigan, and Texas.

For more information on accurately covering religious exemption legislation, such as SB 1140, please refer to GLAAD’s tip sheet: How to cover “religious exemptions” court cases, federal guidance, and legislation.

Another day, another religious hypocrite busted on child sex charges. Paul Edward Acton Bowen was arrested on Tuesday and “charged with second-degree sodomy, enticing a child to enter a vehicle or house for immoral purposes, and second-degree sex abuse” of a male minor under the age of 16.

AL.com reports:

Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector said the department’s Special Victim’s Unit first launched an investigation three weeks ago. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office issued the warrants on Monday.

“This is certainly one of the more disturbing cases that we’ve investigated in quite some time,” Rector said. “Mr. Bowen is in a highly-respected position of influence and he is trusted by many. We believe he betrayed that trust in the worst kind of way.”

Bowen was taken into custody in Pelham and transported to the Hoover City Jail. He will be moved to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held on $90,300 bond.

TODAY — HRC PRESIDENT CHAD GRIFFIN (@CHADHGRIFFIN) TO SPEAK AT OKLAHOMA PRESS CONFERENCE: SB 1140, a license to discriminate in child welfare services bill, which has passed the Oklahoma Senate, is likely to have a hearing today in the House Judiciary Committee. The bill would make it harder for kids to find foster and adoptive families by allowing taxpayer-funded government contractors to refuse to work with LGBTQ individuals, same-sex families, or other qualified prospective parents who do not share all the tenets of the contractor’s faith. HRC will hold a press conference at 2:30 PM CT, alongside Freedom Oklahoma and other advocates to discuss the harms this bill will cause, and to encourage Oklahomans to contact their representatives and voice their opposition to the measure.

HAWAII HOUSE OF REPS PASSES BILL TO PROTECT YOUTH FROM “CONVERSION THERAPY”: It moves to conference committee before it can go to Governor David Ige’s desk for his signature. Last month, Hawaii’s State Senate passed SB 270 with only one senator voting against it. “So-called ‘conversion therapy’ is nothing short of child abuse with life-threatening consequences for countless LGBTQ youth,” said HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “It is time Hawaii join the growing number of states that are enacting laws to protect LGBTQ youth from this dangerous and discredited practice.” More from HRC.

HRC ENDORSES BETO O’ROURKE FOR THE U.S. SENATE: “The choice for Texas voters this November could not be starker. While Ted Cruz has spent his career undermining the rights of LGBTQ people for his own cynical, political gain, Beto O’Rourke is a proven champion of equality who will defend the rights of all Texans,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Now more than ever, it is crucial we have elected officials such as O’Rourke pushing back against the Trump-Pence agenda in Washington and fighting for the rights of all their constituents back home, including those who are LGBTQ. By electing Beto O’Rourke and defeating the anti-equality Ted Cruz, we can not only pull the emergency brake on this administration’s hate-fueled agenda, but send a message that the days of attacking LGBTQ people for political gain are over.” More from HRC.

HRC ENDORSES KATE MARSHALL FOR NEVADA LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR: “Kate Marshall’s commitment to equality and years of service to the people of Nevada make her the clear choice for voters,” said HRC Nevada State Manager Briana Escamilla. “As Lieutenant Governor, I have no doubt she will work hard to advance equality in the Silver State.” More from HRC.

MORNING MUST READ FROM ARIZONA REPUBLIC — “WHY PARENTS ARE LOSING CUSTODY OF TRANS AND GENDER NON-CONFORMING KIDS”: Researchers have found no evidence that a parent can “force” a child to be transgender, but experts say family courts often act based on fear or misinformation.  Arizona Republic’s Maria Polletta (@mpolletta) explores this in the context of an Arizona judge who issued injunctions forbidding a mother from affirming her daughter’s identity during a custody case. MICHAEL JOHNSON GRANTED PAROLE IN CASE INVOLVING DISCRIMINATORY MISSOURI HIV STATUTE: Johnson, a former Missouri college student, had been convicted of violating Missouri’s discriminatory HIV transmission and exposure statute. As part of a plea deal last year, he was sentenced to 10 years. More from BuzzFeed.

  • HIV criminalization doesn’t lower HIV transmission rates. In fact, researchers found “no association between HIV and AIDS diagnosis rates and criminal exposure laws across states over time, suggesting that these laws have had no detectable HIV prevention effect.”

HRC URGES POLICE TO INVESTIGATE MIAMI ATTACK ON GAY MEN AS HATE CRIME: The Miami Herald and other news outlets are reporting that the suspects have turned themselves in.

Joel Lerner and Carter Hebert, a gay couple at Chattahoochee High School in Johns Creek, Georgia, are being told by Fulton County Schools that though they are nominated, they can’t become Prom King and Prom King because of ballot issues.

They are calling it discrimination.

CBS46 reports: “The two male students, who are in a relationship together, said they were both nominated to be named prom king. They campaigned in the hopes that they would both be able to win the title of prom king and be the first gay couple in the school’s history to hold the title of Prom Royalty. The two students said when they spoke with school administrators, they were told that despite the fact that a straight couple was also nominated to be named Prom Royalty, the process of election would not change. The two male students proposed opening the election process from one list of male candidates and one list of female candidates to a list that included both sexes, and students would vote for the two best options.”

Said Hebert to FOX5: “We’ve been lucky because we’ve never really been facing discrimination, especially in the area we’ve grown up in, and from the school, which has been amazing. But when it came to this, we were hoping they would do what they normally did and gave us equality and let us run together.”

Fulton County Schools released this statement: “The Chattahoochee High School administration has met with students requesting to change the process for selecting prom king and queen. The students were told that because nominations have been made and the process is underway, the school administration is not in a position to make changes at this time. If they would like to change the process moving forward, student leaders are encouraged to present a proposal to the school’s administration and governance board.”

The students have launched a petition calling for equal prom rights.
