Good, Clean, Gay Sex: Best Practices for Better Bottoming

Good, Clean, Gay Sex: Best Practices for Better Bottoming

Body Conscious: Gay Men’s Health, Sex, and Self is a new regular twice-monthly feature from Towleroad covering the unique issues gay men face with regard to physical and mental fitness.

The results of a new survey of 300 gay men were recently released by Bespoke Surgical, a self-described “elite anal surgery practice” focused on sexual wellness. The company focuses on preventative screenings, anal rejuvenation including botox and bleaching as well as anal restoration services like skin tags, anal warts, hemorrhoids, abscesses, fistulas, and fissures.

Body Conscious Gay Men's Health, Sex, and SelfSo it’d make sense they would want to know more about how gay men feel about anal sex and their preparation for it.

One question posed by the company focused on condom usage. They found that 37% of their respondents always use a condom during anal sex, 21% occasionally do, and 16% never use a condom.

The company found that among its respondents hygiene was a major concern before and after anal sex.

78% of those polled said they think about cleanliness always or most of the time during anal sex, while just 9% never think about it. And clean-up was important to 61%, who said they would feel more comfortable if they used some sort of anal cleanser afterwards.

As for the frequency of anal sex:

39% – a couple times a week.
24% – a couple times a month.
13% – daily

Writes Bespoke: “Put another way, 5 in 6 gay men have anal sex at least a few times each year. Only 1 in 6 partake less than once each year. This information has implications: it confirms that the topic of anal sex preparation is something that impacts many people. Plus, if it’s something that most people don’t do properly, it’s a issue about which people need to be educated.”

As far as preparation goes, those polled by Bespoke on their use of a douche before sex replied with these answers:

42% – always or frequently use an anal cleanser
38% – rarely or never
21% – sometimes

They add: “Interestingly, gay men who have anal sex daily are 1.3 – 2.1 times more likely to always use an anal cleansing product, compared to those who do it less often. We found that, generally speaking, the less frequently someone has anal sex, the more likely they are to never use an anal cleansing product.”

Bespoke also found that, among its respondents, 25% used a water-based enema to prepare for sex, 20% used a saline enema, and 18% used a shower adapter.

But should you even be douching at all? Not according to some experts.

Dr. Evan Goldstein, who founded Bespoke, told VICE that douching too often can lead to other health issues: “If you’re doing it every day, there are a lot of issues with enemas. You can lengthen your colon, and that can lead to constipation later in life. That’s what’s so dangerous about it. It’s not threatening, but it’s a real pain in the ass, so to speak, it can make you uncomfortable and miserable.”

Goldstein said that there’s little chance you’re gonna run into anything up there anyway: “Imagine if you line up ten guys, and you’re going to top them all. Even if they haven’t prepared, nine out of ten would be completely stool-free.”

And Dr. Stephen Goldstone, an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital and a specialist in anorectal disease and gay men’s health, agreed, explaining that feces stay in an upper part of the colon called the sigmoid colon until you’re ready to take a dump, so encountering them during sex isn’t going to occur most of the time.

Also, don’t use Fleet or other based saline enemas because the chemicals in them are super harsh on your rectum, causing irritation, along with dryness and mucus issues that can lead to bleeding and make transmission of STDs more likely.

If you want to make a change, try adding more dietary fiber to your diet, and consider just washing your anal area before sex. If you absolutely must douche, do it with plain water, and not too much of it.

For some further tips, check out the clips on the top and the bottom of this post.

Bespoke’s survey also asked about sex toys, and anal damage. They reported: “We found that 41% of gay men have experienced tearing or other damage from anal sex. Finally, the data tells us that 45% of gay men don’t use a sex toy for anal sex at all, while 41% use one at least to prepare. 55% use one for pleasure, to prepare, or both. It’s possible that those who use a toy to prepare may be doing so to avoid tearing or other damage.”

Bespoke’s survey found that 39% of men said they were tops, 29% identified as bottoms, and 33% described themselves as versatile.

How do you clean up for sex?

HRC Calls on Trump-Pence Administration to Withdraw Anti-LGBTQ Nominee Gordon Giampietro

HRC Calls on Trump-Pence Administration to Withdraw Anti-LGBTQ Nominee Gordon Giampietro

Today, HRC continued calls for the Trump-Pence Administration to withdraw its nomination of Gordon Giampietro, an anti-LGBTQ extremist recently nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. HRC has released a new video highlighting abhorrent comments Giampietro made during radio interviews that previously went undisclosed to Wisconsin’s judicial nominating committee.

“Gordon Giampietro’s disturbing views against the LGBTQ community, women and other marginalized groups raise serious questions about his ability as a Judge to enforce equal treatment for all people under our laws,” said HRC Wisconsin State Manager Wendy Strout. “Someone who publicly and unabashedly voices contempt for equality and diversity has no place on the bench or in public office. HRC will continue to oppose Giampietro and other anti-LGBTQ nominees that the Trump-Pence Administration scrapes from the bottom of the barrel.”

Gordon Giampietro’s disparaging comments include referring to birth control as “an assault on nature,” saying marriage equality is “against God’s plan” and LGBTQ people are “troubled” and unfit to be parents. In online writings, Giampietro attacks a woman’s right to choose and criticized the Civil Rights Act of 1964, claiming that “calls for diversity” are “code for relaxed standards.”

The Trump-Pence administration has appointed and nominated scores of extreme and unqualified anti-LGBTQ officials to crucial agencies and court benches — some of whom will serve lifetime appointments. Giampietro’s nomination is part of a larger trend of Donald Trump nominating radical, anti-LGBTQ judges to the federal bench, including Jeff Mateer, Damien Schiff, Leonard Steven Grasz, Mark Norris, and Stephen Schwartz.

Last month, TBS ordered a pilot for another series created by Waithe, Twenties. Check out a trailer for the upcoming episode of The Chi below!

2) Egyptian Filmmaker Sam Abbas is launching the first ever “Arab-based film company that will focus on movies with LGBTQ themes”. ArabQ will open with Abbas’ first film, The Wedding, which centers on a closeted man struggling with his sexuality before his upcoming marriage. The film stars The Bold Type-fan favorite Nikohl Boosheri (Adena). Abbas stated that by placing the company in Egypt, it will be a great chance to encourage “more queer cinema with Middle East ties.”

3) Out actor and comedian Tig Notaro has just been cast in Paramount’s new comedy, Instant Family. The film will center on a couple who decide to start a family by adopting three children. Notaro stars alongside Octavia Spencer as the social workers who cause more drama for the couple. Production is set to start next month.

5) Blood Orange, or Dev Hynes, released a short album earlier this month, titled Black History. The two songs on the album are “June 12th” and “Christopher and 6th.” “June 12th” specifically deals with the intersectionality of being a queer black man, and how these identities have shaped his life. Blood Orange’s next album is likely to be released sometime this year. Check out the song below!

6) Out country singer Chase Sansing has just released his new single, “Begins with You.” Sansing has said that this song is representative of his own experiences as a gay man. “I wrote this song specifically to reach out to kids that are like me and are growing up in a small town thinking they are different and that there’s something wrong with them and that it’s a bad thing,” he continues. “I hope this song shows them that it’s not and they are perfect the way they are.” Watch his music video below.

7) Kelela, the out musician and GLAAD Media Awards nominee, has just released an animated video for her song “Frontline.” Watch her music video below! In other music news, pansexual musician Russel Elliot has just released the music video for his new single “I’ll Be Damned.” His song comes off his new EP Split Ends, which is set to be released next month. Much like his first EP, Split Ends will also deal with the details of queer relationships.

8) Fischerspooner has recently released their new album after almost a decade. Sir is all about queer relationships in the digital age. Casey Spooner has stated that he thinks the album is more important now than ever as the album specifically focuses on queer stories in a climate where our voices are often sidelined. Check out one of the songs of the album, “Butterscotch Goddam,” below!

9)Jill Soloway, the creator of the award-winning Amazon show Transparent, is set to launch her own Amazon publishing imprint. Topple Books is meant to “spotlight the voices of women of color, gender non-conforming, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer writers.”

10) Recently out transgender writer Mal Ortberg is set to release her new book, The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror on March 13th. Ortberg is the founder of the now discontinued online publication, The Toast, as well as the author of the New York Time’s Best Seller Texts from Jane Eyre.  This new collection of short stories will take inspiration from classic tales such as Cinderella and Frog and Toad are Friends, and many of the stories will discuss ideas of gender and gender roles.

11) Lavender, a short film that is currently seeking funding, follows the story of a young gay Latinx man who becomes wrapped up in the relationship of an older couple. According to director Matthew Puccini, this film is “a tender, poignant look at an unconventional relationship as it blossoms and ultimately unravels.” To learn more about Lavender, click here, and watch the Kickstarter video below!
