GLAAD-funded doc TransMilitary premieres at SXSW to rave reviews

On Saturday, March 10th, the GLAAD-funded documentary TransMilitary, premiered at SXSW. TransMilitary chronicles the lives of four American transgender service members defending their country’s freedom while fighting for their own, and the larger efforts to bring an end to the ban on transgender people serving openly in the U.S. military. Director Gabriel Silverman, Co-Director Fiona Dawson, and Producer Jamie Coughlin previously created the popular Emmy®-nominated 2015 New York Times Op-Doc “Transgender, at War and in Love.”

The documentary received a standing ovation from the premire audience and rave reviews from critics.

The Austin Chronicle said:

“Expertly edited, the documentary interweaves the four subjects’ lives with statistics, research, and animations to create a seamless narrative that’s both informative and visually engaging. Personal, familial, and professional hardships are explored, but it’s TransMilitary’s stories of the brave transgender military service members and veterans that ultimately elevates the documentary from mere analysis to a compelling and emotionally moving portrait.”

The Hollywood Reporter said:

“The current state of things, as in nearly every other matter where Trump has a say, is in question. But one thing TransMilitary makes clear is that individual trans people can work effectively in the armed services, and that coworkers and top brass are not necessarily an obstacle to that service. (In cases we see hear, they’re vocally grateful for it.) Perhaps if Trump had actually served in the organization he now leads, he might be less confused on the matter.”

The premiere was followed by a reception where the film’s subjects and creators spoke about the film’s impact and importance.

In attendance were Equality for HER Founder Blair Imani and NCTE National Organizer Raquel Willis.

— Blair Imani @ SXSW (@BlairImani) March 12, 2018

“As the Trump administration continues to attack trans Americans at every turn, including proposing a ban on trans service members, it is more vital than ever to elevate the experiences of trans service members,” said Zeke Stokes, Vice President of Programs at GLAAD, and an Executive Producer of TransMilitary, “SXSW provides a massive platform to share the important and powerful stories in of these brave patriots who want nothing more than to serve the country they love.”

In 2017, GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis walked the red carpet of the MTV VMAs with some of the TransMilitary cast to ensure that the real people who would be affected by Trump’s proposed military ban would be front and center to the American public. GLAAD also invited Laila Ireland to speak at the 2017 GLAAD Gala San Francisco to tell her story. Check out her speech below:

Funding for TransMilitary comes as part of GLAAD’s commitment to elevate the voices and stories of trans service members. The GLAAD Media Institute provides engagement, training and education for LGBTQ and allied community members and organizations desiring to deepen their media impact. Using the best practices perfected by GLAAD for more than 30 years of experience leveraging media to create change, GLAAD is training a new generation to accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people, as well as other marginalized communities. The GLAAD Media Institute provided a grant to the film, which includes promotion, media outreach, and visibility assistance for the project.

Betsy DeVos’s Pathetic ’60 Minutes’ Interview Shows She Has No Idea What She’s Doing: WATCH
betsy devos 60 minutes

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is being rightly pilloried for a pathetic 60 Minutes interview in which she can’t answer basic questions about public schools.

DeVos was grilled by Lesley Stahl over why Michigan’s public schools are performing poorly in the face of policies DeVos has pushed.

Sec. of Education Betsy DeVos struggles to answer fairly basic questions on school performance on 60 Minutes pic.twitter.com/lFVq3USwUW

— Axios (@axios) March 12, 2018

Here’s the transcript:

Lesley Stahl: Why take away money from that school that’s not working, to bring them up to a level where they are– that school is working?

Betsy DeVos: Well, we should be funding and investing in students, not in school– school buildings, not in institutions, not in systems.

Lesley Stahl: Okay. But what about the kids who are back at the school that’s not working? What about those kids?

Betsy DeVos: Well, in places where there have been– where there is– a lot of choice that’s been introduced– Florida, for example, the– studies show that when there’s a large number of students that opt to go to a different school or different schools, the traditional public schools actually– the results get better, as well.

Lesley Stahl: Now, has that happened in Michigan? We’re in Michigan. This is your home state.

Betsy DeVos: Michi–Yes, well, there’s lots of great options and choices for students here.

Lesley Stahl: Have the public schools in Michigan gotten better?

Betsy DeVos: I don’t know. Overall, I– I can’t say overall that they have all gotten better.

Lesley Stahl: The whole state is not doing well.

Betsy DeVos: Well, there are certainly lots of pockets where this– the students are doing well and–

Lesley Stahl: No, but your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better, is not working in Michigan where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here.

Betsy DeVos: I hesitate to talk about all schools in general because schools are made up of individual students attending them.

Lesley Stahl: The public schools here are doing worse than they did.

Betsy DeVos: Michigan schools need to do better. There is no doubt about it.

Lesley Stahl: Have you seen the really bad schools? Maybe try to figure out what they’re doing?

Betsy DeVos: I have not– I have not– I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming.

Lesley Stahl: Maybe you should.

Betsy DeVos: Maybe I should. Yes.

HRC Statement on Today’s Vote for Chief Justice to Connecticut Supreme Court

HRC Statement on Today’s Vote for Chief Justice to Connecticut Supreme Court

HRC released the following statement in response to partisan attempts to block the confirmation of Justice Andrew McDonald for Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.

“Connecticut is on the verge of making history with the potential confirmation of Andrew McDonald as Chief Justice, who would be the first openly LGBTQ chief justice of a state Supreme Court,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “Connecticut’s leading legal voices all agree that McDonald is highly qualified and should be judged on his qualifications, acumen, experience and character. At a time when partisan politics continues to stand in the way of real progress in our country, we urge the Connecticut legislature not to politicize the judicial confirmation process and make a fair choice in the Connecticut House today.”

Currently an associate justice, Andrew McDonald has served on the Connecticut Supreme Court since 2011 and was nominated to be the next Chief Justice by Governor Dannel Malloy in January. Despite his exemplary record, which has been widely praised by the Dean of the UConn Law School, both the current and incoming President of the Connecticut Bar Association, the President of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association and more, there continues to be partisan opposition to his nomination. Following a 13 hour-long hearing and a tie vote along party lines last month, McDonald’s nomination was sent to the Connecticut General Assembly. The State Senate is expected to vote later this week, if the nomination is approved by the General Assembly today. If confirmed, he would make history as the first openly LGBTQ Chief Justice on a U.S. state Supreme Court.
