Anchorage Residents Must Vote NO on Dangerous Prop 1

Anchorage Residents Must Vote NO on Dangerous Prop 1

Post submitted by Christopher Cooke, HRC Western Regional Field Organizer

On Tuesday, HRC President Chad Griffin and HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse visited Anchorage, Alaska, to support local coalition efforts to defeat Proposition 1. The dangerous and discriminatory ballot measure would rip away crucially important non-discrimination protections and enshrine discrimination into law by forcing transgender people to use facilities that are inconsistent with their gender identity.

Griffin and Rouse were able to meet with local transgender residents and HRC members whose lives would be negatively impacted by the dangerous  proposition, including David and Col Lockard, a father and his transgender teenage son that have spoken out in campaign ads to show the real people that Proposition 1 would harm. Griffin and Rouse also met with Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz, who signed the city’s LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance into law in 2015, and with other Anchorage residents

With just a few days remaining in the campaign, a growing list of bipartisan Anchorage community leaders and businesses have come out against the discriminatory proposition including leaders from faith communities, the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the superintendent of public education and both mayoral candidates.

Christopher Cooke, HRC Western Regional Field Organizer, will continue to work on the ground in Anchorage with coalition partners until the final ballots are cast on Tuesday, April 3. Anchorage residents can sign up to volunteer here and find information on voting here.

This communication was paid for by the Human Rights Campaign, Washington, D.C. Chad Griffin, President, approves this message.

Country pop crossover Kacey Musgraves, who is on the verge of a massive breakout with her new album Golden Hour, spoke to Billboard about her changing career, and how she’s changed as well.

Musgraves told Billboard that getting out in the world transformed a homophobic upbringing and allowed her a different perspective on how people should be treated.

She said she regrets that once she was a party to bullying.

Said Musgraves: “At 18, I was a lot more redneck than I am now. I think back to who I was then: being in a small-town high school and seeing a gay guy get made fun of, I’d like, laugh along and not really think much about it. A best friend came out to me right after high school, and that’s when I started getting it — my perspective completely changed. Moving to Nashville, I started hanging out at this gay club called Play all the time, and I made so many friends. It really hurt my heart that I had ever even been close to being the opposite of that.”

Earlier this month she told HuffPost that she’d love to see a gay country music icon.

Said Musgraves: “I keep dreaming of the day when we have a gay country music icon, that is loud and proud and really, like, a hero for country music fans, especially in these small towns where [LGBTQ people] are terrified of being themselves and feel like they have to hide….If we had someone who could be that voice, a first-person account of that voice in our genre…I think it could be a really powerful thing.”

Why not her? Vulture offers a good argument.

¿Me atrevo a esperar pertenecer aquí?

Abre tus ojos, tus brazos.

Alec Ross

Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alec Ross has come under fire for saying his opponent, gay longtime lawmaker Rich Madaleno, “prances around Annapolis.”

— Victory Fund (@VictoryFund) March 28, 2018

The Washington Post reports:

Madaleno’s campaign put out a statement that called Ross’s choice of words “poor and insensitive.” In an interview, Madaleno said he was proud of his legislative record and thought Ross’s word choice was “interesting.”

“Alec Ross certainly wouldn’t say Rushern Baker is ‘prancing around’ Prince George’s County, or that Krish Vignarajah was ‘prancing around’ while serving on first lady [Michelle] Obama’s staff,” the campaign’s statement read, referring to two of the other Democratic candidates in the gubernatorial race.

Ross said he wasn’t talking about Madaleno’s sexuality. Julie Verratti, Ross’s openly gay running mate, called Ross a “good + decent person who made a poor language choice.”

Said Madaleno on Facebook: “I’m proud of my extensive record of accomplishment in Annapolis. As an elected official I have pranced my way to victory with: the assault rifle ban; marriage equality; the fracking ban; free community college tuition… And I will keep delivering results by fighting in the Senate for all Marylanders. Trust me to prance my way to the Governor’s mansion this November.”

HRC PRESIDENT TO TRUMP — SPEAK UP ABOUT THE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY TARGETING MEN SUSPECTED OF BEING GAY OR BISEXUAL IN CHECHNYA: HRC released a letter from HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin) to Donald Trump calling on him to end his deafening silence on the ongoing crimes targeting men suspected of being gay or bisexual in the Russian republic of Chechnya. Griffin’s letter comes as HRC is also urging its members and supporters to contact the White House and demand Trump condemn the atrocities as “crimes against humanity.” “Over the past year, this White House has remained unconscionably silent as men suspected of being gay or bisexual have been rounded up, tortured, imprisoned, and even killed in the Russian republic of Chechnya,” Griffin said. “Enough is enough. Donald Trump must end his shameful silence and unequivocally condemn these horrific atrocities for what they are — crimes against humanity.” More from HRC, Metro Weekly and Washington Blade.

Alisyn Camerota David Hogg

Alisyn Camerota David Hogg

Parkland survivor and anti-gun violence activist David Hogg joined Alysyn Camerota on CNN’s New Day this morning to react to Laura Ingraham’s apology. At least 8 advertisers have dumped Ingraham after the FOX News host mocked Hogg’s rejection from colleges.

Said Hogg: “I would say that she needs to be more objective and stand down because I am not the issue here, the issue needs to be gun violence in America but what she’s trying to do is to distract from that and I hate it.”

He added: “She’s only apologizing after a third of her advertisers pulled out and I think it’s really disgusting the fact that she basically tried promoting her show after ‘apologizing’ to me. I think it’s wrong and if she really wanted to do something she could cover things like inner city violence and the real issues that we have in America.”

Asked Camerota: “How are you coping through all this?”

Replied Hogg: “When I see things on Twitter of people comparing me to Hitler or calling us Communists…It’s literally only been five and a half weeks and the fact that they’re going after us personally shows that what we’re doing is working. We have them scared and now we have to go even harder because this is when it really starts to matter.”

Camerota then asked if Hogg would ever sit down with Ingraham to have a face-to-face.

Replied Hogg: “I would like to do that but first I would need her to be more objective in the way that she talks about us…what she does most of the time is, she’s like ‘this leftist group is trying to take all your’…. She gets this really threatening tone about us that we don’t have. We’re people that just want everybody to come together as Americans and solve this issue.”

Finally, Camerota asked, “What kind of dumb-ass colleges don’t want you?”

Said Hogg with a smile: “We have a heavily impacted university system in America. I think there’s a lot of really good candidates that don’t get into college. I think it goes to show that regardless of whether or not you get into college, you can still change the world. The hardest part is just believing that you can and continuing that effort to change the world because you eventually will.”
