The Current Debate About Whether Trans Women Are Women Scares Me

The Current Debate About Whether Trans Women Are Women Scares Me

Trans women and trans-historied women have been around for a long time. They have a long history of fighting oppression. Encouraged by my mother, I grew up in awe of Germaine Greer. Approaching womanhood and associating with others, I came to understand the roles played by Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera in the Stonewall Riots. An activist, I felt inspired by the example of these women. Now I’m grappling with the notion that some, Greer included, would consider Rivera and Johnson to have been men.

Of late I’ve been trying hard to reach out and understand the concerns of my exclusionary feminist sisters. I’ve done so as society bravely attempts to define what we mean by the terms ‘man’ and ‘woman’.  Those terms seem to be changing forever.  As a trans-historied woman it has begun to scare me a little too.

I grew up a dutiful little feminist daughter, imbibing the second wave doctrines expounded by my mother. Now I’m not so sure.  A trans-historied female, I’ve fought alongside my older feminist sisters to combat oppression and to promote an agenda in which we were united by a common experience of misogyny. In sharing my experiences I genuinely believed we were allies and friends with the same cause.

As women, our experiences are parallel. Natal born women cannot know what it was like to grow up a trans girl. Trans born women cannot know how it felt growing up a natal girl. We can however appreciate and listen to each other’s experiences. Here are mine: I was the three year old who insisted that she wasn’t a boy, the one they beat up constantly at school.  I was the awkward, shy, brown haired girl downtown buying new clothes and records in an attempt to fit in. I grew up experiencing my teens as a girl; men opened doors for me and I was flattered. By the time I was a young single mother returning to her career, the same men slammed doors in my face. As a child I was abused by a man who saw me as a sexual novelty. I’ve lived half my adult life free from a fake existence forced on me by others. Now I’m lucky to be a happily married woman, working alongside a husband who cares about me. I work as a trained counsellor in the LGBTQIA community.  As a woman I work hard to make a difference to the lives of others.

In all this, I never expected to be excluded by my sisters or told that I was actually ‘the enemy’. To divide one group of women from another appears to strike at the very foundations of feminism. Is that what we want?

I want to understand the vitriol and anger behind radical feminists’ denunciation of trans women. I’m trying hard to empathise with how they feel. This blog is my own attempt to reach out to them. I’m asking for them to listen and empathise with how trans women feel too.

In the meantime, the stand off between radical feminists and trans feminists rages on.

There are many more burning issues that still face us all like pay inequality, oppression in the workplace, sexual objectification and unequal rights. Why are we so obsessed with talking about women’s only spaces as though it is the only current issue?

I suspect that while we take our eyes off the ball and fight each other tooth and nail, we may lose everything that we have fought together so far to achieve.

BREAKING — HRC RELEASES GROUNDBREAKING SURVEY OF LGBTQ WORKERS’ ACCESS TO PAID FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE: The national survey, which comes on the 25th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), found that only 45 percent of respondents reported that their employers offer leave policies — paid or unpaid — that are inclusive of LGBTQ families and identities. And, when compared to the overall U.S. population, LGBTQ respondents reported heightened concerns about accessing leave, citing potential loss of income and adverse workplace outcomes from having to disclose their LGBTQ identities through leave requests. Said Mary Beth Maxwell, HRC’s Senior Vice President for Senior Vice President for Programs, Research, and Training. “As the only developed nation in the world without some form of guaranteed paid leave policy, American workers, including LGBTQ employees, are too often forced to either forgo their income or leave their job entirely to treat an illness, care for a loved one, or grow their family.” FMLA is a federal law guaranteeing certain employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year. RNC ATTACKS TRANSGENDER SERVICE MEMBERS, SUPPORTS TRUMP’S UNCONSTITUTIONAL BAN: Said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy: “The RNC’s statement is a disgusting attack on thousands of brave transgender service members and the armed services as a whole. It goes against the expert opinions of the medical and military communities in addition to flying in the face of supportive statements offered by at least 20 Republican lawmakers. As every federal court ruling to date has confirmed: this ban is unconstitutional.” More from HRC.

For the sake of the country, stand up and do something.”

Here’s Donald Trump In 2015 Describing The NHS As ‘Great’
Donald Trump’s claim the NHS is “broke” is in stark contrast to the view he expressed in the run up to the US presidential election, when he described it as a “great system”.

The President was speaking on the David Letterman show in 2015 and described a friend’s experience in Scotland where he has a major golf course.

He said: “I had an incident in Scotland… a friend of mine in Scotland, he got very, very sick and they took him by ambulance, he was there for four days.

“He was really in trouble. And they released him and he said ‘where do I pay?’ and they said ‘there’s no charge’.

“And not only that it was great doctors and great care.”

The Democrats are pushing for Universal HealthCare while thousands of people are marching in the UK because their U system is going broke and not working. Dems want to greatly raise taxes for really bad and non-personal medical care. No thanks!

HRC Releases First-Of-Its-Kind Survey of LGBTQ Community on Need for Paid Family and Medical Leave

HRC Releases First-Of-Its-Kind Survey of LGBTQ Community on Need for Paid Family and Medical Leave

HRC Foundation released a report detailing the results of its groundbreaking nationwide survey of LGBTQ people that reveals an urgent need for inclusive employer-paid family and medical leave. It comes on the 25th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), a federal law guaranteeing certain employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year.

More than 5.400 LGBTQ people from all 50 states responded to HRC’s 2018 U.S. LGBTQ Paid Leave Survey, the largest and most comprehensive ever of its kind, and the results are sobering: only 45 percent of respondents reported that their employers offer leave policies – paid or unpaid – that are inclusive of LGBTQ families and identities. And, when compared to the overall U.S. population surveyed in a recent Pew Research poll, LGBTQ respondents reported heightened concerns about accessing leave, citing potential loss of income and adverse workplace outcomes from having to disclose their LGBTQ identities through leave requests. They also reported higher rates of simply foregoing needed or desired leave to avoid those significant downsides.

“No one should have to choose between who they are, the people they love and the job they need,” said Mary Beth Maxwell, HRC’s Senior Vice President for Senior Vice President for Programs, Research, and Training. “As the only developed nation in the world without some form of guaranteed paid leave policy, American workers, including LGBTQ employees, are too often forced to either forgo their income or leave their job entirely to treat an illness, care for a loved one, or grow their family. Increasingly, forward-thinking employers are offering paid leave because it’s good for families and businesses both.  These survey results underscore the urgent need for paid and inclusive leave policies for LGBTQ workers of all ages and in every field.”

Among the survey’s revealing findings:

  • Fewer than half of respondents report that their employer’s policies cover new parents of all genders equally;
  • Only 49 percent say that employer policies are equally inclusive of the many ways families can welcome a child, including childbirth, adoption, or foster care;
  • One in five respondents report that they would be afraid to request time off to care for a loved one because it might disclose their LGBTQ identity, illustrating the need for explicit federal LGBTQ-inclusive non-discrimination protections;
  •  And 48 percent of respondents, reflecting the prevalence of family rejection within the LGBTQ community, indicated that they feel an increased responsibility to care for loved ones whose own families have rejected them because of their LGBTQ identities — a critical caretaking role often excluded from leave policies.

Like all U.S. workers, LGBTQ employees are signifcantly challenged by the lack of paid family and medical leave policies. That lack of access, LGBTQ respondents report, forces many to use sick days, vacation days or unpaid leave to be there for a loved one who is seriously ill. Overall, 92 percent of respondents say they believe the U.S. should guarantee paid leave for all American workers.

HRC’s detailed report also includes deeply personal stories from LGBTQ workers accessing or seeking to access family or medical leave. They include a bisexual woman living in the South who was repeatedly denied leave for the birth of her child and medical treatment by a boss who told her that he didn’t agree with the employee’s “way of life.” And a transgender woman, Olive, who recounts her experience of being told she’d be fired if she took leave for a transition-related surgery. After Olive threatened to sue, her boss walked back his threat — but laid her off shortly after the surgery citing “shrinking budgets.”

Included in recommendations outlined in the report, readers are encouraged to support inclusive paid leave legislation and policies at the federal, state, and local levels, to advocate in their workplaces for inclusive paid leave policies, and to share publicly their own experiences accessing leave as an LGBTQ worker or family-member.

The full report is available here.

Doch was folgt daraus?

Soziale Anerkennung statt Salafismus-Phantasien

Viel Wille, wenig Wissen

Und wenig Wissen, was wirklich etwas bringt.

White Supremacist Ethan Stables Convicted Of Planning Machete Terror Attack At LGBT Event

White Supremacist Ethan Stables Convicted Of Planning Machete Terror Attack At LGBT Event
Items found in Stables' flat

The court was earlier told Stables was a white supremacist and a Nazi who was trying to obtain guns and the means to make an improvised explosive device.

As the Pride event approached he became “enraged” and by June 23 had managed to accumulate an axe, machete and knives, but no firearms.

On that day, the jury was told, Stables posted a series of messages in a Facebook chat group which included: “I’m going to war tonight,” and “I’m going to walk in with a f****** machete and slaughter every single one of the gay bastards”.

The court was shown body-cam footage taken by an officer searching Stables’ flat a few hours after his arrest.

This showed a large Nazi flag on the wall, an axe and knife on a table, another table piled with matches with their heads removed and a large machete under a table.

Stables’ barrister, Patrick Upward QC, told the jury his client was a fantasist who never expected anyone to believe what he posted online.
