Human Rights Must Be At The Heart Of UK Trade Policy

Human Rights Must Be At The Heart Of UK Trade Policy

Last week, Prime Minister Theresa May left behind her warring Cabinet to travel to China on her mission to establish ‘Global Britain’ as the Brexit negotiations trudge on. Accompanied by International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and the largest-ever UK trade delegation, the Prime Minister was looking to reignite the so-called ‘golden-era’ of UK-China relations that the two countries experienced when David Cameron and George Osborne were at the helm in Downing Street.

A renewed trading relationship – though one that even Liam Fox has admitted can be improved whilst remaining in the Customs Union – is important, but the Government should also be using its dialogue with China to raise its concerns over human rights. Indeed, China’s desire to trade with us is arguably the only leverage we have. To Theresa May’s credit, she went to China pledging to raise Hong Kong and human rights concerns with her Chinese counterparts. However, come the end of her trip, the state-run Global Times newspaper praised the Prime Minister for having “sidestepped” her desire to publicly challenge China over human rights.

China’s progress in some areas, such as a new resolve to tackle climate change, should be welcomed. But the Government should not shy away from challenging Beijing over the country’s human rights record. In 2013, the UK was the first country to produce a National Action Plan to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which was launched by William Hague with a great fanfare. With echoes of Robin Cook’s “ethical foreign policy” the then Foreign Secretary said that human rights would be “at the heart of British foreign policy”. This was not, however, borne out by the Government’s behaviour. It was impossible, for example, to get David Cameron to answer straightforward questions on whether he’d raised human rights concerns during a visit to Saudi Arabia back in 2012.

We know that China uses its trade negotiations with other countries to promote its political designs. For example, when Norway re-established ties with China in 2016, after a frosty period following the Dalai Lama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, it was only possible because the Norwegian Government committed itself to the ‘One China’ policy, which precludes any support for Tibet.

The EU, with the UK as a member, has long inserted human rights clauses into its trade agreements, and, although the mechanism for enforcement is imperfect, trade sanctions were imposed on the likes of Zimbabwe and Iran when human rights violations occurred. By leaving the Customs Union the UK Government wants the freedom to carve out its own trade agreements. But after Theresa May’s acquiescence in Beijing last week, it would appear we cannot have much hope of the UK Government asserting itself in future conversations with China.

When questioned about the Business and Human Rights Action Plan in the Commons last year, the International Trade Secretary seemed to have barely heard of it. Human rights simply aren’t on his agenda. As recently as April 2017, he praised the “shared values” that he believes the UK has with Rodrigo Duterte – nicknamed “the Punisher” – the Philippine leader whose war on drugs has killed 7,000 of his own people. And we are all aware of his close links with the Sri Lankan regime during the time of President Rajapaksa and human rights violations against the Tamil population.

Of course if the UK were to remain in the Customs Union we would be in a much stronger position when it comes to raising human rights with countries of concern, as part of the world’s largest trading bloc. In the absence of this, we must ensure that Parliament has proper scrutiny of future trade deals, so that we can properly hold the Government to account.

Transgender rights targeted by multiple ballot measures across the United States

Transgender rights targeted by multiple ballot measures across the United States

Discrimination is on the ballot in Massachusetts and Anchorage, Alaska, with signatures currently being collected for a third anti-transgender ballot measure in Montana

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following statement along with Fair Anchorage and Freedom for All Massachusetts calling attention to the alarming ballot measures targeting transgender rights across the United States.

“Transgender people are part of our workplaces and our neighborhoods, and they need to be able to access public spaces just like everyone,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD. “The anti-transgender ballot initiatives showing up across the country are rooted in the insidious goal of blocking the rights of transgender people to exist in public space and they must be exposed and defeated.”

***

Most urgently, voters will consider Proposition 1 in the city of Anchorage, Alaska, which would repeal portions of the city’s 2015 nondiscrimination ordinance that protects transgender people from discrimination and would require everyone in Anchorage to use the public restrooms and locker rooms that match the sex assigned to them at birth. The vote is taking place via mail-in ballots being sent out on March 12th and due by April 3rd.

“Anchorage’s Proposition 1 would repeal basic protections for our transgender friends and neighbors, and won’t make anyone safer,” said Kati Ward, campaign manager of Fair Anchorage. “All of us value safety and privacy, but Proposition 1 is an invitation for harassment and that’s not how we treat people in our city. Voters should vote no on Proposition 1 to keep the law as it is and keep discrimination out of Anchorage.”

***

The state of Massachusetts will face the first-ever statewide ballot initiative on transgender rights, which will appear on the November 2018 ballot. The anti-transgender ballot initiative seeks to roll back nondiscrimination protections, signed into law in July 2016, which extended public accommodations protections to the Commonwealth’s transgender residents.

“Massachusetts’ transgender nondiscrimination law has been in effect for nearly two years, and it’s vocally supported by every civic and institutional leader across the Commonwealth, from law enforcement to faith leaders,” said Kasey Suffredini, campaign co-chair of Freedom for All Massachusetts. “That’s because in Massachusetts we know that families are healthier and communities are stronger when everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Transgender people are our friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and fellow worshippers, and when voters are asked whether to continue to treat them with dignity and respect they will vote yes. Yet with the stakes so high, this campaign is working every day until November 6 to ensure our laws stay intact and discrimination stays out of Massachusetts.”

***

There is also a looming ballot measure in Montana, where signatures are currently being collected to place Initiative 183 on the ballot. This ballot measure specifically targets transgender Montanans by requiring people to use the restroom that aligns with the gender on their original birth certificate and forcing people to comply with anyone demanding to see paperwork before granting them access facilities in public spaces, including schools. The Montana legislature debated a nearly identical bill during its 2017 legislative session, which failed to pass committee. Fewer than 26,000 signatures are needed by July to get the measure onto the November 2018 ballot and the ACLU of Montana is currently challenging the initiative as unconstitutional.

***

Anti-transgender advocates behind the push for all three of these ballot initiatives are promoting fearmongering and derogatory myths about the transgender community to advance their agenda. This includes focusing on restrooms despite the sweeping ramifications of revoking public accommodation protections and falsely claiming that protecting the transgender community would make it legal for criminals to enter women’s restrooms. Reporters covering these ballot initiatives must avoid reducing the complexity of these measures to “bathroom bills,” include the voices of transgender people, and reject inaccurate and ugly stereotypes used to defame or malign transgender women.

For more information, see GLAAD’s “Debunking the ‘Bathroom Bill’ Myth” guidebook as well as the MythBuster page on the Freedom for All Massachusetts website.

Malaysian Paper Publishes ‘How to Spot a Gay Person’ Checklist

Malaysian Paper Publishes ‘How to Spot a Gay Person’ Checklist
Malaysia gay list

Malaysia gay list

The Malaysian newspaper Sinar Harian published a bullet point checklist on how to spot gay people. Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia and punishable by 20 years in prison.

The Guardian reports: “The article in Sinar Harian featured bullet points of supposedly distinctive qualities that revealed LGBT people. They stated that gay men were easy to identify because of their love of beards, going to the gym – not for exercise but to check out other men – and branded clothing. Their eyes light up when they see handsome men, the article said. The stand-out attributes for lesbians were that they tend to hug each other, hold hands and belittle men, according to the newspaper.”

Just last year, an 18-year-old Malaysian man died after he was beaten, burned and sodomized with an object by a group of eight youths.

Activist Arwind Kumar posted a video to YouTube ripping the newspaper and the list.

Said Kumar: “There are much more important issues in this country which need to be addressed. If you really want to educate society then explain to them the traits of a pedophile, a molester, a murderer, a kidnapper, people who actually endanger the lives of others. How the hell does a gay person endanger your life? … I know a lot of priests, I know a lot ustads [Islamic scholars], I know a lot of of really really religious people who love keeping beards. Are you trying to say they are gay? That’s how stupid this is.”

Watch:

The Guardian adds: “The derogatory attitude towards LGBT people in the media is also symptomatic of the increasing influence of conservative Islam in mainstream politics and culture in Malaysia. The Sinar Harian article was accompanied by an interview with Hanafiah Malik, a preacher who warned homosexuality was on the increase in Malaysia and said there was an urgent need to stop the trend. Homophobic rhetoric is also evident even in government discourse. The country’s deputy interior minister attacked Walt Disney last year for refusing to cut a gay scene in Beauty and the Beast at the request of the Malaysian censorship board, and a Malaysian health ministry youth video competition called for entries discussing the prevention and consequences of being gay, lesbian or transgender.”

Snapchat’s Snap Map Is Now Viewable By Anyone On The Web

Snapchat’s Snap Map Is Now Viewable By Anyone On The Web

Snapchat’s Snap Map can now be viewed by anyone through a web browser.

The company today announced that it would be making the feature available online, regardless of whether you have a Snapchat account or not.

Unlike the app version of Snap Map which shows snaps and the locations of your friends, the web version only shows snaps that have been designated as publicly viewable.

Interestingly, Snapchat sees this not just as a means of exploring cities but also as a news source.

By using the heat map Snapchat envisages news organisations using it to grab videos straight from breaking news locations and then embedding them in their articles.

Snapchat’s Snap Map launched to some controversy back in July after it was revealed how easily its users could be sharing their location without realising it.

This effectively allows you to zoom in on ‘hot spots’ around the world where there are a lot of snaps being taken.

As you can see from the embedded map above, this has unsurprisingly centred around many of London’s tourist hotspots including parks, museums and monuments.

Adam Rippon interview

Out U.S. figure skater Adam Rippon made a thrilling Olympics debut on Sunday (unfortunately clips of the actual competition are not readily available) and gave some enlightening and hilarious post-skate interviews.

NBC’s Mike Tirico interviewed Rippon after his event and asked if the Mike Pence controversy (the skater made headlines after saying he would refuse to meet with the anti-gay  VP before his event) had distracted Rippon in any way.

Said Rippon: “You know, Ive worked my entire life for this moment. But more than that, my mom has always taught me to stand up what I believe in and that has given my skating a greater purpose. So I go out there and I’m not only representing myself, I’m representing my coaches, I’m representing my country and I’m representing my teammates. So I remember that and that’s how I stay focused.”

According to AFP, Rippon also said “yes of course” when asked if he would now meet with the vice president.

When asked if being at the Olympics was everything he thought it would be, Rippon responded with a tilt of the head: “Andrea, it’s like pretty awesome. I highly recommend it. If you ever have the option come to the Olympics. It’s like, a fun time.”

Was war geschehen?

Exactly! NBC should have hired an unbiased and culturally sensitive commentator. Not a moron like Joshua Cooper Ramo! He knows how to kill the party! @NBCOlympicst.co/nYOFAZcVd2

— hixtape (@MarkLederDNFT) February 10, 2018
