Oscar Nominations Highlight LGBTQ Community and Stories in Several Categories

The highly anticipated 90th Annual Academy Awards will feature a number of groundbreaking stories about LGBTQ people and celebrate the artists who brought them to the screen.

Noteworthy this year is the Chilean drama “A Fantastic Woman,” nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. The film tells the story of a young transgender woman’s struggle after her partner suddenly dies. The film stars Daniela Vega, a transgender actor and lyrical singer. HRC was proud to co-host a screening of the film in Washington, D.C., earlier this month.

Yance Ford, an openly transgender director, is nominated for Best Documentary (Feature) for “Strong Island,” a film in which Ford investigates the 1992 murder of his brother, William Ford Jr. According to E! News, he is the third openly transgender person nominated for an Oscar.

Dee Rees received a nomination for Adapted Screenplay for “Mudbound,” becoming the first Black lesbian in Oscar history to earn the designation, according to Deadline. Rachel Morrison, the first woman to be nominated for Best Cinematography for her work in “Mudbound,” is married to Rachel Garza.

“Call Me By Your Name,” a coming-of-age story featuring a same-sex relationship, is nominated for four awards, including Best Picture.

Other nominees include openly gay songwriter Benj Pasek, who received a nomination for Best Original Song for “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.” Coco, nominated for Best Animated Feature, was co-directed by openly gay Adrian Molina.

Several allies are also nominated. Meryl Streep, honored by HRC with an Ally for Equality Award last year, is nominated for her role in “The Post,” a movie in which she plays Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major newspaper in the U.S. Allison Janney, an ally and HRC supporter, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in “I, Tonya.” Richard Jenkins received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for playing Giles, a gay man in the fantasy film “The Shape of Water.”

Last year, “Moonlight,” a coming-of-age story about a gay black man, made history when became the first Best Picture winner with an LGBTQ plotline.

HRC is proud to call so many of these nominees longtime HRC supporters and leaders in the fight for LGBTQ equality, and we wish them the best of luck. The Academy Awards will air March 4 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

FORGOT PASSWORD. Why Hawaii’s governor didn’t tweet about the incoming missile.

Arpaio Donald TrumpSTORMY DANIELS. Trump paid off Stormy Daniels after the election? “Given that the payment made from the Trump campaign to Trump Tower Commercial LLC was for roughly the same amount that Essential Consultants LLC paid to Daniels — and given the fact that the payout occurred just one month after the 2016 presidential election ended — this transaction is sure to raise questions over whether campaign funds were used to cover the costs of paying off a porn star.”

Tony PerkinsTONY PERKINS. Trump gets a “mulligan” on affair with porn star. “You get a do-over here.”

WHAT ME WORRY? Trump says he’s not at all concerned that Jeff Sessions spoke with Robert Mueller. “Trump’s comment comes after the Justice Department confirmed that Sessions was interviewed last week as part of Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Reporter: “Are you concerned about what the attorney general told the special counsel?”
Trump: “No, I’m not at all concerned.” pic.twitter.com/l7gyfzm2nf

BROMANCE OF THE WEEK. Alexander Skarsgard and Jack McBrayer.

MATT DRUDGE. Trump can’t wait to run for reelection in 2020.

Time to call out Michael Wolff and his fabricated bullshit! I had dinner with the president a few weeks ago and he was in fine form. He was optimistic, engaged, on top of the world, loving the job. And already talking about his 2020 re-election run!! t.co/zglmnMIXOf

THE WALL. Chuck Schumer withdraws offer of big spending boost on Trump’s wall:  “The Senate minority leader, through an aide, informed the White House on Monday that he was retracting the offer he made last week to give Trump well north of the $1.6 billion in wall funding Trump had asked for this year, according to two Democrats. And now they say Trump will simply not get a better deal than that on his signature campaign promise.”

TRUMP’S WAR ON THE PRESS. The consequences.

DO UR JOB DAMMIT. Rosie O’Donnell rips Chris Cuomo for Kellyanne Conway interview.

NOT TAKING OVER ANYMORE. Tabatha returns to TV: ‘Now, the 48-year-old is back with a new series, Relative Success With Tabatha. She describes it as the “2.0 version” of her old show — but this time, it isn’t about taking over. It’s about giving family businesses tools to succeed with minimal hands-on intervention from Tabatha herself. Now, she’s more of a coach. In fact, she’s actually certified to coach people in life and in business.

JAMES CORDEN. I spanked Donald Trump.

TORONTO. Police criticized for promoting fear in the community over gay murders: “They’re telling us not to be afraid of something we should be afraid of, and telling us to be afraid of something we shouldn’t be afraid of,” he said. “It ties death to gay sexuality which is very old rhetoric.”

SHROPSHIRE, UK. White supremacist planned attack on Pride event with machete, court hears: ‘A white supremacist with “a deep-seated hatred of black, Jewish, Muslim and especially gay people” was planning a “murderous attack” on a Pride event using a machete and an axe, a court has heard. Ethan Stables, 20, was planning acts of terrorism against groups he hated, prosecutors told Leeds Crown Court. In June last year, he had assembled a machete, knives, an axe, an air rifle and a ball bearing gun when he became “enraged” about a planned LGBT Pride event at the New Empire pub in his home town of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, a jury heard on Tuesday.’

FLOODWATER RESCUE OF THE DAY. Unreal rescue in Baton Rouge.

NEW TUNE OF THE DAY. Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey “The Middle”.

TRAILER OF THE DAY. A Wrinkle in Time.

NTAs 2018: Suranne Jones’ 50:50 Pin Sends The BBC, ITV And Channel 4 A Strong Message

NTAs 2018: Suranne Jones’ 50:50 Pin Sends The BBC, ITV And Channel 4 A Strong Message

Suranne Jones made a powerful fashion statement at the 2018 National Television Awards.

After the triumph of the ‘Time’s Up’ all black dress code at the Golden Globes we feared we may have seen the last of feminist fashion statements on the red carpet. But thankfully, that is not the case.

The ‘Doctor Foster’ star proudly pointed to a pin on her lapel that read: Equal representation for actresses 50:50.

ERA 50:50 is a grass roots campaign that has been active for two years and is fighting for equal representation for women on UK stage and screen by 2020.

The campaign’s website states: “Our mission is a simple one. We want to see women represented on screen, in television and theatre in equal numbers to men. Currently women are systemically under represented. This does not accurately reflect our society. It distorts our view of the real world.

Members are calling on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and all other major broadcasters to implement an equal gender balance across their drama and comedy shows by 2020.

Jones also led a trend for suits among the women on the red carpet at this year’s NTAs.

Fearne Cotton demonstrated how to rock the 2018 flare revival.

‘Line Of Duty’ star Vicky McClure kept her suit classic and offset it with a belt and statement earrings.

And Laura Whitmore went for tapered trousers.

BBC Presenter Richie Anderson Comes Out as Gay to His Football Teammates: WATCH

BBC Presenter Richie Anderson Comes Out as Gay to His Football Teammates: WATCH
Richie Anderson

Richie Anderson

BBC host Richie Anderson came out as gay to his football teammates at the Coombs Wood FC in a segment that aired on BBC’s The One Show this week.

Said Anderson: “My teammates know I’m making a film about grassroots football but have no idea what I’m about to say.”

Turned out there was no nervousness required and they received the news with open arms.

Said Anderson afterward: “So, so relieved. I can’t even tell you. I expected it as they’re a good bunch of lads. It probably helped that I scored as well, but I’m so relieved. The main thing is, I hope there’s people watching this that are in the same boat I was in, and they’re thinking, ‘You know what? I can do that as well.’”
