Österreich verpasste seinen Start in das Turnier am Freitag. Die Mannschaft unterlag Weißrussland in Porec mit 26:27 (12:14). Überragender Akteur der Österreicher war Nikola Bylik vom THW Kiel, dessen acht Treffer aber nicht zum Sieg reichten.
Frankreich wendete eine Auftaktpleite gerade noch ab. Gegen Mitfavorit Norwegen gewann die Mannschaft von Trainer Didier Dinart dank eines späten Tores von Michael Guigou mit 32:31 (15:17). Bester Schütze seiner Mannschaft war Kentin Mahe von der SG Flensburg-Handewitt mit acht Toren.
Nun müssen die Mannschaften gegeneinander antreten.

Cassie Hayes Named As TUI Travel Agent Killed In In-Store Attack
A fundraiser for the family of a travel agent who died after she was attacked while at work has raised thousands of pounds.
Cassie Hayes was attacked at the TUI store in Chapel Street, Southport, on Saturday afternoon.
The 28-year-old was taken to hospital where she subsequently died from her injuries.
At the time of writing, an online fund for her family had reached almost £4,000.
The fundraiser was set up by Bruce Martin, managing director of travel trade website Travel Gossip.
He said: “Everyone who works in travel has been deeply upset about what has happened to a fellow travel colleague, Cassie Hayes, in Southport on Saturday 13th January.
“Cassie was the assistant manager at the TUI store and was well-known to many in travel.
“Many of us never met Cassie but we *know* that if we did, we would have thought she was great. We know, because we are travel.
“We understand that Cassie had a daughter and so on behalf of everyone in travel I would like to propose that we come together and contribute to fund to help Cassie’s family as they see fit.
“Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this terrible incident, including all the TUI staff.”
A 30 year-old man from the St Helens area has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
He is currently being held in custody.
Merseyside Police said they believed that the incident was domestic-related.

SNL took on Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House in its Cold open. The segment opened on Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough mulling Trump’s “s—-hole countries” remarks between periods of filthy sexual banter.
Michael Wolff (Fred Armisen) joined Joe and Mika to talk about the book and the debate over its truthfulness.
”Look, you read it right? You liked it? You had fun?”, asked Armisen’s Wolff. “Then what’s the problem? You got the gist, so shut up.”
Bill Murray’s Steve Bannon then showed up to talk about the book.
”Steve my God I always thought you looked like death but this is death warmed over,” said Mika.
Bannon then backed up Wolff’s book and argued that his power still lives. “The Bannon dynasty is dawning.”
”I’m working on a web series for Crackle. It’s called pups in cars getting coffee. And I’m also coming out with a new line of wrinkled barn jackets for guys called Frumpers for guys. Springtime – skincare line – Blotch.”

Ein Passagierflugzeug der türkischen Fluglinie Pegasus ist bei der Landung in der nordtürkischen Schwarzmeerstadt Trabzon von der Piste abgekommen. Der Schlamm auf dem Abhang verhinderte eine Katastrophe.
Niemand sei bei dem Vorfall am Samstagabend verletzt worden, meldete die staatliche Nachrichtenagentur Anadolu unter Berufung auf den Provinzgouverneur.
Von Anadolu verbreitete Bilder zeigten, wie das Flugzeug im Schlamm an einem steilen Abhang neben der Landebahn nur wenige Meter vom Meer entfernt feststeckt.
Pegasus fliegt auch Ziele in Deutschland an
Die Maschine war aus der Hauptstadt Ankara gekommen. Wieso das Flugzeug von der Piste abkam, blieb zunächst unklar.
Der internationale Flughafen in Trabzon nahm nach einer Unterbrechung wieder den Flugverkehr auf. Pegasus ist eine private Fluglinie und fliegt auch Ziele in Deutschland an.

Police Hunt Suspected Crossbow Killer After Man Murdered And Woman Injured
A manhunt is under way for a suspected crossbow killer after a man was murdered and a woman was attacked at their home.
Shane Gilmer, 30, from Southburn, a village near Driffield, has been named as the man killed in the attack, which took place on Friday evening.
A crossbow was reportedly used in the attack and Humberside Police have cordoned off the rural village and have been searching local woods, according to the Press Association.

Gilmer died at Hull Royal Infirmary on Saturday, while the woman remains in a stable condition.
Police thanked the public for help in tracing Lawrence’s vehicle, a Vauxhall Meriva following an appeal.
Chief Inspector Andy Parsons said: “We are still appealing for anyone who believes they have seen Mr Lawrence to call us immediately on 999.
“While we still believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the wider public, please do not approach him yourself.”
Lawrence is white, around 5ft 10in tall, with short dark hair and large build.
Anyone who sees him is asked to call 999.
