Deadline reports:

Netflix today has decided to pull the plug on House of Cards after the upcoming sixth season next year.

Coming just over 12-hours after the Star Trek Discovery star first made public his allegations on October 29 of what happened at a party at Spacey’s NYC apartment back in the mid-1980s, the streaming service made the decision today sources tell us. Key cast and creatives were alerted this morning.

Caroline Lucas Schools Tory On What Churchill Thought Of Voting Reform

Caroline Lucas Schools Tory On What Churchill Thought Of Voting Reform
Green MP Caroline Lucas had to set a Tory MP straight after he falsely claimed Winston Churchill was against electoral reform.

Steve Double was making the case for the UK’s first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting system during a debate in Westminster Hall on Monday – but he got mixed up on the former PM’s stance.

The St Austell and Newquay MP said: “One of the strengths of our current FPTP voting system is that it is simple and it gives a quick and decisive result.

“Indeed, Churchill liked it and so did Tony Benn, men who not often agreed with one another, but on this they did.”

But the wartime Prime Minister was actually thought to be in favour of a proportional representation (PR) system.

Churchill has been quoted as saying: “The present system has clearly broken down. The results produced are not fair to any party, nor to any section of the community.

“In many cases they do not secure majority representation, nor do they secure an intelligent representation of minorities. All they secure is fluke representation, freak representation, capricious representation.”

The famous Conservative was also on record as saying PR was “the fairest, the most scientific and, on the whole, the best in the public interest”.

The debate in Westminster Hall came about after more than 100,000 people signed a petition.

Double told MPs: “Across the political spectrum, there is a broad consensus that fptp works well, is understood by all and its perceived flaws are less grievous than any of the alternatives.”

He also said FPTP stops “extremist parties” from gaining power and produced stable government.

Double admitted that two of the last three elections had not produced a government with an overall majority but said: “In the contest of our history, that is still quite rare.”

He added that FPTP made governments more accountable to the electorate.

Lucas replied: “I cannot help but say the words DUP, first of all, on the issue of coalition government. It doesn’t seem to have done to have done very well under FPTP.

“Secondly, very quickly, Churchill was actually pro-PR so let’s make sure our facts are right.”

The Brighton MP also said that PR would boost voter engagement, adding: “PR would help tackle the reasons why people don’t vote at all.”

A study of the general election by the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) found huge swathes of Labour strongholds would be held by the Conservatives if Westminster adopted a proportional representation (PR) system.

The ERS said Westminster’s “broken” FPTP elections are more like lottery than a real choice.

According to its research, 6.5 million people felt compelled to vote tactically, rather than for their first choice, and the Conservatives could have won a majority if a tiny sliver of the population – 0.0016% – had chosen differently.

A jaw-dropping 22 million votes cast had no impact on the result whatsoever.

Voting reform has support from the Lib Dems, the Greens, some Labour MPs and the SNP, but the Conservatives have remained staunch opponents to changing the FPTP system.

HRC Opposes Scott Garrett to Lead Export-Import Bank

HRC Opposes Scott Garrett to Lead Export-Import Bank

Today, HRC announced its opposition to Donald Trump’s nomination of Scott Garrett as President of the Export-Import Bank. Garrett is the second Trump-Pence nominee with a significant anti-LGBTQ record shamelessly chosen to replace an openly-LGBTQ public servant.

“Scott Garrett is not qualified to be the President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. It makes no sense to appoint someone to lead an institution he does not believe should exist,” said David Stacy, HRC Government Affairs Director. “Among many House Members with anti-LGBTQ records, Scott Garrett managed to stand out for his extreme positions on the inclusion of LGBTQ people in our country. The Trump-Pence administration continues to dispatch anti-LGBTQ officials to all levels of government and Garrett is simply another disgraceful agent in their crusade against equality. We urge the Senate to reject his nomination.”

In 2015, Garrett pushed for the exclusion of openly LGBTQ candidates and refused to support the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) because it “actively recruited gay candidates and supported homosexuals in primaries.” Garrett’s stance  hateful remarks led to HRC to call for his removal as subcommittee chair in the House Financial Services Committee.

Scott Garrett served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, most recently earning a score of zero in HRC’s Congressional Scorecard. During his time in Congress, Garrett voted against hate crimes protections for LGBTQ people, against the repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, refused to support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and he twice voted in favor of writing discrimination into the U.S. Constitution by banning marriage equality.

Who Is George Papadopoulos, Trump Aide Who Lied To FBI About Russian ‘Dirt’?

Who Is George Papadopoulos, Trump Aide Who Lied To FBI About Russian ‘Dirt’?
A foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has pleaded guilty to a charge of lying to FBI agents about “dirt” he was offered on Hillary Clinton.

George Papadopoulos, 30, pleaded guilty on October 5, but the case wasn’t unsealed until Monday, according to a statement from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

He becomes the third adviser to Trump’s campaign to face criminal charges in the FBI investigation after Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, and his associate, Rick Gates, surrendered on Monday morning.

Papadopoulos reached a plea deal with prosecutors, and has since been cooperating with Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Prosecutors’ statement of the offence alleges Papadopoulos was offered thousands of emails containing “dirt” on Clinton in April 2016 ― months before the Russian hack of the Democratic National Committee was known.

Sorry, but this is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign. But why aren’t Crooked Hillary & the Dems the focus?????
But he made no mention of the Papadopoulos guilty plea, which commentators have hailed as “significant”.

Former US Attorney Preet Bharara, who was fired by President Trump earlier this year, tweeted: “Special Counsel Mueller already has one criminal conviction. And this plea portends more charges to come.”

Special Counsel Mueller appears to have a cooperating witness, George Papadopoulos. That is significant. Time will tell how significant.

Rebecca Roiphe, a professor at New York Law School and a former assistant district attorney, noted the publication of Papadopoulos’ plea agreement online sends a certain message.

“You can tell that he’s a cooperator from that,” she told the Daily News. “My only speculation is they’re trying to get people to flip. They’re saying to people, publicly, We have more information than you think you have.”

According to the statement, Papadopoulos “made material false statements and material omissions” during a January 27 interview with the FBI and was arrested on July 27.

Under a plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to recommend between no prison time to six months.

Papadopoulos can be seen in the picture below of Trump meeting with national security advisers, third from left.

Who is George Papadopoulos?

Papadopolous is an international energy lawyer who was on Trump’s advisory team during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The Washington Post reported that Papadopoulos is a 2009 graduate of DePaul University in Chicago, before moving to London to get a master’s degree in security studies.

Previously, he was an adviser to Ben Carson’s presidential campaign and was the US representative at the Geneva International Model United Nations in 2012.

The newspaper notes, however, that Papadopoulos “has not left much of a paper trail”, pointing to handful of newspaper op-eds and articles with Israeli news outlets.

All his commentary argues Israel should use the natural gas it has found in the giant Leviathan field offshore in the eastern Mediterranean to build bridges to Greece and Cyprus, and avoid dealing with Turkey at all costs.

Who is the London connection?

Papadopoulos was living in London when he joined the Trump campaign, according to the statement.

Papadopoulos told the FBI a London-based professor had “told him about the Russians possessing ‘dirt’ on then-candidate Hillary Clinton in the form of ‘thousands of emails,’ but stated multiple times that he learned that information prior to joining the campaign”, according to court documents.

In fact, Papadopoulos was contacted after he learned he’d be joining the campaign, and the professor only mentioned the “thousands of emails” after he’d been on the Trump campaign for more than a month.

The professor, the statement indicates, had “substantial connections to Russian government officials” even though Papadopoulos claimed the professor was “a nothing”.

Papadopoulos sent a “High-Ranking Campaign Official” an email titled “New message from Russia” back in June 2016, in which he said the Russian ministry of foreign affairs wanted to meet with either Trump or a campaign official in an off-the-record capacity, according to the prosecutors’ statement.

A Trump campaign supervisor encouraged Papadopoulos to make the trip “if it is feasible” on August 15, 2016.

What does Papadopoulos say?

From his lawyers: “We look forward to telling all the details of George’s story.”

BREAKING: HRC Responds to Court Decision Blocking Trump-Pence’s Discriminatory Ban on Trans Troops

BREAKING: HRC Responds to Court Decision Blocking Trump-Pence’s Discriminatory Ban on Trans Troops

Today, HRC responded to the decision by a U.S. Federal Judge to block enforcement of the Trump-Pence Administration’s unconstitutional ban on military service by transgender troops.

“Today’s preliminary injunction is an important step in the ongoing efforts to protect transgender service members from the dangerous and discriminatory policies of Donald Trump and Mike Pence,” said Sarah Warbelow, HRC’s Legal Director. “Donald Trump’s erratic tweets and half-baked orders disrespect the bravery of the countless transgender people who have fought, and in many cases died, for their country. The immediate harm to our national defense and to the thousands of transgender people serving and wishing to serve their country must be stopped — and we are grateful that a federal judge has blocked this administration from discharging any qualified individuals because of their gender identity while these cases continue to make their way through the courts.”
