About Spirit Day

Each year, millions go purple for GLAAD’s Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying. Started in 2010 by high school student Brittany McMillan in response to numerous young LGBTQ lives lost to suicide, Spirit Day now draws the participation of celebrities, schools, faith institutions, national landmarks, corporations, media outlets, sports leagues, and advocates around the world, all joining together to stand against bullying and support LGBTQ youth.

As anti-LGBTQ policies, hate crimes, and harassment are on the rise, it is now especially important to let all marginalized youth know they are supported.

This year, Spirit Day is on October 19, 2017. Take the Spirit Day pledge to show LGBTQ youth you’ve got their backs at glaad.org/spiritday. Follow @GLAAD on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr to keep up to date with #SpiritDay news.

Myeshia Johnson

Donald Trump lashed out at the grieving widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, the soldier who was killed with three others in in Niger, after Myeshia Johnson sat down for an interview with ABC News, disputing her account of the condolence call made to her by the president.

NBC News reports:

The pregnant widow of Sgt. La David Johnson said Monday the phone call she received from President Donald Trump before meeting her husband’s body at Dover Air Force Base made her more upset as the president struggled to remember her spouse’s name.

“I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name, and that’s what hurt me the most because if my husband is out there fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name?” Myeshia Johnson told “Good Morning America.” “And that made me cry even more.”

…“It made me cry because I was very angry about the tone of his voice and how he said it,” Johnson said. “He couldn’t remember my husband’s name. The only way he remembered my husband’s name was because he told me he had my husband’s report in front of him, and that’s when he actually said La David.”

Johnson, of Miami Gardens, Florida, corroborated the story of Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla.

“Whatever Miss Wilson said was not fabricated. What she said was 100 percent correct,” Johnson said.

Watch Johnson’s interview with George Stephanopoulos:

Tweeted Trump shortly after the interview: “I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!”

Trump also gave an interview to Maria Bartiromo on Sunday in which he talked about the phone call to Johnson, and said “I was so nice.”

Deadline reports:

Describing John Kelly’s reaction to Congresswoman Frederica Wilson telling reporters that Trump said La David Johnson “knew what he signed up for”, Trump says to Bartiromo that the Chief of Staff “actually couldn’t believe it. Actually, he said to me ‘Sir, this is not acceptable. This is really not’ – and he knew – I was so nice.”

First ever TransTech Summit aims to empower trans community

First ever TransTech Summit aims to empower trans community

Kicking off Trans Awareness Month is the first ever TransTech Summit, taking place November 4, with workshops and talks all led by trans and gender non-conforming facilitators. Created by Angelica Ross, the TransTech Summit will provide training in four tracks:  Design Technology, Web/App Technology, Media Technology, and Business Technology.

The weekend will kick off November 3 with a game night, hosted by Columbia College and keynoted by Madison Hinton. The TransTech Summit will begin the following day at Groupon’s headquarters in Chicago.

“My purpose in launching the TransTech Summit is to inspire everyone in the LGBTQ community that is experiencing marginalization, especially trans women of color, to take inventory of their skills, discover their value and learn how to communicate that value in concrete business terms and in the job market,” said Angelica Ross, CEO of TransTech Social Enterprises.

“It is critical that we kick off Trans Awareness Month and create a momentum of motivation with more than just strategies for survival, but strategies for creating a thriving and economically empowered trans community,” she added. “We are no longer asking for equity, we are creating it.”

Programming highlights will include:

  • Special presentation from employers, armed with active job openings, and ready to interview and talk to Summit Attendees in an interactive career fair taking place immediately after
  • Closing plenary event featuring an intergenerational panel discussion in partnership with AARP

For tickets and additional information, visit www.transtechsocial.org/summit.

The TransTech Summit is presented by Angelica Ross and AARP, hosted by Groupon and Columbia College, and sponsored by Paypal.

TransTech is an incubator for LGBTQ Talent with a focus on economically empowering transgender people in our community. In 2014, CEO Angelica Ross founded TransTech Social Enterprises to follow a vision: A social enterprise that provides education, support, and jobs for trans people facing high levels of discrimination.

Earlier this year, Ross’ interview on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, in which she shed light on the discrimination and barriers to employment that transgender people face, received a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Talk Show Episode. Joined by Noah, Ross took the stage to accept the award at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City. This year, GLAAD also recognized the Emmy-nominated web series Her Story – which starred Ross as lead actress – with a Special Recognition Award.
