Trump Sells ‘USA’ Baseball Caps for $40 After Hawking Them in Hurricane Harvey Photo Ops

In two successive Hurricane Harvey photo ops at Camp David this week, Donald Trump wore baseball caps emblazoned with ‘USA’ on the front and ‘Trump’ on the back that he’s selling for $40 on his campaign website.

As the NYT stated so succinctly: “Mr. Trump, we are reminded every day in ways we would not have imagined the day before, speaks and acts in the interests of himself and no one else.”

HRC Mourns Cassidy Karakorn, Beloved Colleague and Advocate

Today, the Human Rights Campaign released the following statement mourning the loss of Cassidy Karakorn:

“The HRC Family is mourning the loss of our beloved colleague and friend, Cassidy Karakorn. Over her 17-year career at the Human Rights Campaign, Cassidy tirelessly championed civil rights for the LGBTQ community. As Director of Consumer Marketing, Cassidy’s eye for fashion and art made a transformative impact on HRC and helped us reach more people than ever before. Her work was often deeply and profoundly moving; this past June, she worked with renowned artist Meghan Geckler to bring to life an eight story public art installation remembering the 49 lives taken in the Pulse Nightclub shooting and other victims of hate violence.

“Cassidy was a vibrant and energetic force for change in the world. Her talents were boundless. Her creative genius and passion were unmatched. She was fun, caring, and her positivity was contagious. We loved her and loved working with her.

“Our hearts go out to Cassidy’s family and many friends who are grieving her loss. In every future effort, we will seek to make Cassidy proud, and will carry her memory with us always.”

###

Other projects Karakorn spearheaded during her tenure at HRC include Equality Rocks, Sweetlife Festival,  iO Tillett Wright’s Self Evident Truths project and HRC’s Instagram presence. She organized countless collaborations with designers and artists such as Heatherette, Kelly Towles, Marc Jacobs, Alex and Chloe, Kenneth Cole and Everlane.

Trump meltdown

“Mr. Trump, we are reminded every day in ways we would not have imagined the day before, speaks and acts in the interests of himself and no one else,” writes the New York Times editorial board in a searing editorial which takes the pardon of Joe Arpaio as its centerpiece.

Writes the NYT:

To most people with any awareness of Arizona politics, Mr. Arpaio is an abomination to the rule of law, the principle of equal justice and plain decency…

…Yet to President Trump, Mr. Arpaio is a role model: a man for whom the “rule of law” means that he can do what he wants when he wants, who humiliates those weaker than him and mocks those who try to constrain him, who evades scrutiny and accountability — in short, a perfect little tyrant.

The president can pardon virtually anyone he wants, which makes it more telling that he chose to wield the power for the first time in favor of Mr. Arpaio, an officer of the law who defied a court order. It shows not only contempt for the judiciary’s sole means of enforcing the law, but suggests that Mr. Trump may be just as eager to pardon friends, family and allies caught up in the Russia investigation.

The editorial board goes through a laundry list of Trump offenses, concluding:

But this is Donald Trump’s rule of law — a display of personal dominance disconnected from concerns about law and order, equality or the Constitution. That distorted understanding of justice is cleaving the nation between the majority who support the principles of American democracy and those who support only him.

#ProtectTransTroops — HRC IS PLAINTIFF IN LAWSUIT AGAINST TRUMP’S TRANS MILITARY BAN: HRC, represented by Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN, became a plaintiff along with Gender Justice League and transgender individuals affected by the action, in a federal lawsuit challenging the White House directive that interferes in Department of Defense personnel policy by pushing forward the Trump-Pence’s transgender military ban. “Our military is stronger when any qualified American willing to defend our country is able to serve, regardless of their gender identity,” said HRC National Press Secretary Sarah McBride (@SarahEMcBride). “It is an unconscionable and unconstitutional breach of trust for the president to single out brave transgender service members and able recruits for discrimination. The harm that this administration is causing to both these courageous Americans and our national security must be stopped. We are proud to be a plaintiff on behalf of our transgender members currently serving or wishing to enlist or commission, but who find their careers and their future under attack – and we thank all of the plaintiffs, Lambda Legal and Outserve-SLDN for their leadership in challenging this dangerous directive.” More from HRC, Metro Weekly, Washington Blade, HuffPost, The Hill, NPR and Politico.

  • The named plaintiff is Ryan Karnoski, a transgender man and social worker from Seattle. More from KIRO.

A comprehensive list of national and local organizations assisting people affected by the disaster, and guidance on how to donate, is provided by The New York Times.

TUESDAY TWEET — ICYMI, HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT JOE ARPAIO: The Phoenix New Times, which has covered the racist Joe Arpaio for more than 20 years, tweeted out his long, grotesque record of violating the civil rights of Maricopa County’s Latinx population, and carrying out a hate-filled agenda through extreme racial profiling. By pardoning Arpaio, Trump is again aligning himself with his nationalist, racist, anti-LGBTQ supporters — in the wake of the violent extremism in Charlottesville. During his tenure, Arpaio has attacked nearly every marginalized community, including using anti-LGBTQ schemes to humiliate inmates at his ‘Tent City’ prison. Read more here.
