Mit der Änderung des Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuchs werden Homosexuelle Ehen den heterosexuellen Ehen rechtlich gleichgestellt.
Am Morgen des 30. Juni, dem letzten Sitzungstag der laufenden Legislaturperiode, gab es eine historische Entscheidung: Der Bundestag stimmte mehrheitlich dafür, die Ehe für homosexuelle Paare zu öffnen. Bei 623 abgegebenen Stimmen sprach sich eine Mehrheit von 393 Abgeordneten für eine völlige rechtliche Gleichstellung homosexueller Paare aus. 226 Parlamentarier waren dagegen, vier enthielten sich. Die Fraktionen von SPD, Bündnis90/Die Grünen und Die Linke sowie 75 Abgeordnete von CDU/CSU stimmten für das Gesetz. Die überraschende Abstimmung war möglich geworden, weil Kanzlerin Merkel den Fraktionszwang aufgehoben und die Gewissensentscheidung für die Abgeordneten der CDU zugelassen hatte.
Nach der Entscheidung feierte die LGBT-Gemeinde die Ehe für alle vor dem Bundeskanzleramt. Die Große Regenbogen-Torte wurde von Volker Beck, dem Initiator des Gesetzes, angeschnitten.
