HEALTHCARE. Senate Republicans release healthcare bill: “The bill Republicans announced today is even worse than expected and by far the most harmful piece of legislation I have seen in my lifetime,” Sanders said in a statement. “This bill has nothing to do with health care. It has everything to do with an enormous transfer of wealth from working people to the richest Americans.”

MORE: “The legislation is expected to result in millions of people losing insurance when evaluated by the CBO — an estimate the No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said he expects by Monday. The CBO said the House-passed bill would result in 23 million fewer people with insurance by 2026.”

Trump ComeyNO CONFLICTS? Trump to host re-election fundraiser at Trump hotel: “Trump can see the Trump International Hotel from the White House lawn, making it a premier and convenient location for the June 28 major-donor event, his campaign director Michael Glassner said. But the choice also raises ethics questions, according to conflict of interest attorneys who have been critical of Trump’s decision not to cut financial ties with his global business empire.”

FELIX SATER. Trump’s ties to Russian mobster: “One of Bayrock’s principals was a career criminal named Felix Sater who had ties to Russian and American organized crime groups. Before linking up with the company and with Trump, he had worked as a mob informant for the U.S. government, fled to Moscow to avoid criminal charges while boasting of his KGB and Kremlin contacts there, and had gone to prison for slashing apart another man’s face with a broken cocktail glass.”

CURTIS ARMSTRONG. Tom Cruise’s Risky Business co-star claims he was a real womanizer who loved Jesus.

NYC. Financier found dead after hookup: “Neil Rodney Smith, 57, CEO of the investment firm Infraccess, was discovered lying on his back in bed with a wet towel stuffed in his mouth and a pillow over his face inside the apartment at 1 Main St. around 1:45 p.m. Monday, police sources said.”

GOP senator’s intern fired after recording surfaces in which he calls the British “faggots”, Paul Ryan a “cuck” and more: “Additionally — though Nate has been interning in Cotton’s office for six months — he has quite a history of controversial social media posts, as he repeatedly said “fag” and “faggot” and used “gay” as a derogatory term on his public Twitter page before being hired. These Twitter rants also include the use of the slur “tranny.””

#HateWatch: Trump-Pence Endorse Agenda of Anti-LGBTQ Organization

#HateWatch: Trump-Pence Endorse Agenda of Anti-LGBTQ Organization

HRC condemned the Trump Administration’s plans to celebrate an organization dedicated to undermining LGBTQ people and families. Tomorrow, Pence — who has his own long and extensive record opposing LGBTQ equality — will speak on behalf of the Trump Administration at an anniversary celebration of Focus on the Family, a right wing organization that peddles harmful junk science like conversion therapy and lobbies for the erosion of rights for LGBTQ people and families. The Trump Administration’s ceremonial endorsement of Focus on the Family’s agenda during Pride Month is yet another clear indication of their hostility and opposition to LGBTQ equality.

“Mike Pence has spent his career attacking and undermining LGBTQ people and our families, and now, as Vice President he’s continuing the crusade,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “This is an extreme organization that promotes the dangerous and abusive practice of ‘conversion therapy,’ lobbies against allowing LGBTQ people to adopt children who need homes, and opposes anti-bullying efforts in schools. These views are not just antiquated — they are dangerous and wrong. And for the Vice President of the United States to lend credibility to them is beyond shocking.”

Focus on the Family threatened that marriage equality will bring the destruction of civilization, and it has referred to the children of same-sex couples as “human guinea pigs.” They continue to promote the junk science behind conversion therapy, advocate for discriminatory policies and engage in other actions that cause real harm to LGBTQ people and families. Mike Pence has repeatedly praised the organization’s founder, James Dobson, and even called him his mentor at a gathering of anti-LGBTQ activists in June.

Over the years, Focus on the Family has made anti-LGBTQ activism a cornerstone of its work. In 2014, HRC highlighted 10 things you should know about Focus On The Family. The organization and its leaders have continued their harmful actions by:

Trump: ‘I Did Not Make’ and ‘Do Not Have’ Recordings of James Comey

Donald Trump says he made no recordings of former FBI Director James Comey and has none in his possession, answering a question that reporters have been asking him for weeks.

Tweeted Trump: “With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea……whether there are “tapes” or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.”

The statement answers a tweet from Trump back in May.

James Comey better hope that there are no “tapes” of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!

Sen. Cardin Introduces “Lavender Scare” Bill to Apologize to LGBTQ State Department Employees

Sen. Cardin Introduces “Lavender Scare” Bill to Apologize to LGBTQ State Department Employees

Today, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and 13 cosponsors introduced legislation that would issue a formal Congressional apology to LGBTQ employees of the U.S. State Department who were targeted, harassed and fired as part of the infamous “Lavender Scare” witch hunt in the 1950s and 1960s.

During the “Lavender Scare,” which took place in the 1950s and 1960s, federal and state governments investigated and fired thousands of employees who were suspected of being LGBTQ, claiming that they were “security risks” who were vulnerable to Soviet blackmail. The so-called “Lavender Scare” was particularly cruel for employees of the U.S. State Department. Those who admitted to being LGBTQ were often harassed and pressured to reveal others, leading to a witch hunt that lasted for years.

“The Lavender Scare is a painful but little-known chapter in American history. Though times have thankfully changed in so many ways for the LGBT community, we must have the courage of our conviction to recognize wrong, apologize and move forward with common-sense and compassion whenever it is required,” Senator Cardin said in a statement. “This legislation does that retroactively by seeking to correct employment records and codifying Secretary Kerry’s apology, and proactively by bolstering services and protections for all of the Department’s employees and their spouses, as well as those individuals interested in serving their nation. I encourage all my colleagues to join us in moving forward this bill. Its passage would demonstrate that we are at our strongest as a nation when we embrace, not turn away from, our values of equality, fairness and justice.”

In January, just before leaving office, then-Secretary of State John Kerry offered an official apology, following calls from HRC, Senator Cardin and others, asking him to do so.

“On behalf of the department, I apologize to those who were impacted by the practices of the past and reaffirm the department’s steadfast commitment to diversity and inclusion for all our employees, including members of the LGBTI community,” Kerry said.

The legislation offered today goes even further than Secretary Kerry did. In addition to offering an apology, the Lavender Offense Victim Exoneration (LOVE) Act of 2017 would establish a reconciliation board to change the employment record of those who had been fired to reflect the fact that their termination was inappropriate. It would also create a permanent exhibit on the Lavender Scare at the State Department’s museum; require a State Department report about countries that are refusing to issue visas to same-sex spouses of U.S. diplomats; and create an “Advancement Board” to address any issues faced by LGBTQ State Department employees and their families.

HRC thanks Sen. Cardin for his steadfast leadership on this issue and looks forward to working with him to pass this legislation and other initiatives to protect and advance the human rights of LGBTQ people, both here in the U.S. and around the globe.

Majority of Americans oppose anti-LGBTQ religious exemption laws, a new nonpartisan study shows

Majority of Americans oppose anti-LGBTQ religious exemption laws, a new nonpartisan study shows

Study shows opposition across religions despite calls from Trump and Pence for religious exemption laws

GLAAD CEO and President: PRRI study reveals that using religion as a weapon does not line up with American values

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, hailed a study released yesterday by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) which found that over a majority of Americans oppose anti-LGBTQ discriminatory laws, also known as so-called “religious exemption” laws. This is in complete contradiction to the White House’s attempt to erase LGBTQ Americans from the fabric of this nation and the anti-LGBTQ “religious exemption” laws that the country is witnessing in statehouses across the nation. President Trump was also previously rumored to pass an Executive Order that would have brought across-the-board discrimination against LGBTQ Americans.

According to the PRRI study, close to sixty-one percent of Americans oppose allowing small business owners to refuse to provide products or services to LGBTQ people on regions grounds with only 50% of evangelical Protestants, 42% of Hispanic Protestants, and 25% of Black Protestants voicing support of these anti-LGBTQ measures.

“The PRRI study proves what Americans already know – using religion as a weapon to harm the LGBTQ community is wrong and completely out-of-touch with American values,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Instead of pushing their dangerous agenda, President Trump and other anti-LGBTQ elected officials should listen to the people of this nation who know that promoting discrimination is the wrong side of history.”

Since the landmark marriage equality cases by the United States Supreme Court, anti-LGBTQ activists have been using religion as a weapon to harm LGBTQ Americans across the nation. From Vice President Mike Pence’s “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” in Indiana, which gave businesses the right to deny LGBTQ Hoosiers housing, employment, and public accommodations, to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s an anti-LGBTQ adoption law which allowed adoption agencies to deny LGBTQ families the right to adopt a child, anti-LGBTQ lawmakers are taking their discrimination agenda in overdrive. This week’s PRRI study is a blow to the credibility of anti-LGBTQ activists’ arguments.
