Transgender and people from nearby villages throng to the village of Koovagam every year on the eve of chitra pornami in the mouth of May to tie the mangalsutra from the temple priest of Koothandevar Temple who act as Incarnation of Lord Aravan.The very next day they take out the mangalsutra and bangles as a mark of widowship. It is said that Sri Krishna took the female form of Mohini to marry Aravan for fullfilling Aravan’s last wish who was to be sacrificed before the Mahabharata war for the victory of Pandavas.The small hamlet of Koovagam is present in the Vizhuppuram district of Tamil Nadu, making it virtually just another point on the map. However, once a year this tiny village turns into the biggest camp for transgenders from all over the country. They gather in flocks to take part in the rituals of a festival which lasts for 18 days, culminating on Chithira Pournami (April-May). A festival which has its traditions rooted in the very depths of the Mahabharatha war, Krishna’s cunningness and the noble nature of a very valiant young man.

Trump May Reward Russia with Return of Seized Diplomatic Compounds
Donald Trump is moving toward returning two diplomatic compounds seized by the Obama administration as punishment for interference in the U.S. elections, the Washington Post reports:
President Barack Obama said Dec. 29 that the compounds were being “used by Russian personnel for intelligence-related purposes” and gave Russia 24 hours to vacate them. Separately, Obama expelled from the United States what he said were 35 Russian “intelligence operatives.”
Early last month, the Trump administration told the Russians that it would consider turning the properties back over to them if Moscow would lift its freeze, imposed in 2014 in retaliation for U.S. sanctions related to Ukraine, on construction of a new U.S. consulate on a certain parcel of land in St. Petersburg.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez said on Thursday that it shows Trump’s allegiance to Putin over the U.S.
Rep. Adam Schiff asked, “Why reward them?”

Gay Manchester bombing victim Martyn Hett was supposed to be in Wendy Williams’s audience this week. He had saved for two years to travel to the U.S. for the “trip of a lifetime,” part of which included sitting in Wendy’s studio audience.
Williams kept a chair empty in honor of Martyn and paid tribute to the young fan:
“He was really popular on Twitter, he had his own pop culture website, and he’s remembered as a man who loved life…with passion, courage, and laughter. I spoke to his best girlfriend over in London and told her that I was doing this and she was floored, like, ‘oh my gosh he would love this.’ So Martyn, in honor of you, we’re keeping that chair open and our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.”
