Erin Moran

RIP. Erin Moran, Joanie from Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi. Died of stage 4 cancer.

POSITIVE INFO. Trump praises “fake news” polls for containing positive info: “On Sunday, Trump touted the new polls, saying they were ‘very good considering that much of the media is FAKE and almost always negative.’ An ABC News/Washington Post poll released Sunday found just 42 percent of Americans say they approve of the job Trump is doing as president. But the poll found 96 percent of those who voted for Trump in November say it was the right decision and just 2 percent say they regret their choice.”

The two fake news polls released yesterday, ABC & NBC, while containing some very positive info, were totally wrong in General E. Watch!

NATIONAL MONUMENTS. Trump to order review: “On Wednesday, Trump will sign an executive order to demand that the Interior Department secretary examine all national monument designations in the past 21 years to discern whether their size and scope are within the law’s intent, a move that tracks clearly with concerns of members of Utah’s federal delegation about the use of the unilateral presidential power in designating monuments.”

RACHEL MADDOW. Matt Drudge pipes up.

Macron. Flying cars. Maddow #1 in TV news. Welcome to hell.

TIM FARRON. UK Lib Dem leader under fire to clarify views on homosexuality: “Farron, a Christian, was asked four times in two separate interviews on Sunday whether he believes gay sex is a sin. On all four occasions, he refused to give a clear answer.”

THE GOOD NEWS? John Waters announced an adult summer camp. THE BAD NEWS? It’s sold out already.

Andrew ScottGAY BRITANNIA. Sherlock’s Andrew Scott to star in series about the history of gay Britain: “The details of the 40-year-old Dublin-born actor’s role have not yet been revealed. Great British Bake Off host Sandi Toksvig and Simon Callow have also been confirmed for roles in the season of programming which marks the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act 1967, which partially decriminalised homosexual acts in private between two men over the age of 21.”

BLUEBALLS. It’s what Orlando Bloom got for Earth Day.

MALE MODEL MONDAY. Tyler James. More here.

DO WE KNOW. What is Bernie Sanders’ endgame?

KITTY HAWK FLYER. “Flying car” will make those weekends at the lake a bit different. “Kitty Hawk’s flying car, if you insisted on calling it a “car,” looked like something Luke Skywalker would have built out of spare parts. It was an open-seated, 220-pound contraption with room for one person, powered by eight battery-powered propellers that howled as loudly as a speedboat.”

Trump Administration Relieves U.S. Surgeon General of Duties

Trump Administration Relieves U.S. Surgeon General of Duties

The Trump Administration asked Vice Admiral Vivek Murthy to resign from his post as U.S. Surgeon General after “assisting with a smooth transition,” according to a statement from the Department of Health and Human Services. Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, Dr. Murthy’s deputy, is now serving as acting Surgeon General.

Dr. Murthy, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, had been in his position for more than two years before President Trump relieved him of his duties last Friday. A graduate of Yale University and Harvard College, Dr. Murthy was the first Indian-American to become “America’s Doctor,” a position he called “the privilege of a lifetime” in a Facebook post. During his tenure, Dr. Murthy used his platform to address several pressing public health issues, including e-cigarettes as well as food insecurity. The Surgeon General’s office also issued a landmark report on opioid addiction.

Last year, on World AIDS Day, Dr. Murthy joined HRC President Chad Griffin to call attention to the domestic HIV and AIDS epidemic, which continues to take a heavy toll on young, gay and bisexual men as well as transgender women. Dr. Murthy has long been an advocate for HIV prevention, treatment, and care. In 1995, the former Surgeon General co-founded VISIONS Worldwide, an organization focused on HIV and AIDS education in the U.S. and India.

HRC thanks Dr. Murthy for his tireless advocacy on behalf of all Americans, including LGBTQ people, and congratulates Trent-Adams on becoming the first nurse to serve as Surgeon General.

HRC Mourns Chay Reed, the Ninth Black Trans Woman Murdered This Year

HRC Mourns Chay Reed, the Ninth Black Trans Woman Murdered This Year

HRC mourns the tragic death of Chay Reed, a transgender woman of color, who was shot and killed on Friday in Miami. Reed was 28.

WPLG reported that Reed was shot in the stomach while running across the street. Her attacker fled the scene and is still at large. Media coverage had initially misreported her gender because police had misidentified Reed’s gender, according to WPLG.

Patina Peterson, Reed’s longtime friend, spoke to Mic about their longtime friendship — describing her as someone who was full of life and beloved by many.

“She was a light, always trying to make everyone around her happy,” said Peterson. “I don’t even remember her getting into anything. I don’t remember seeing her in an altercation out there with anybody in a bad way. I’ve never seen that.”

Across the United States, Reed is at least the ninth transgender woman of color killed this year. Her death marks yet another dark moment for the transgender community, which is plagued by disproportionately higher rates of violence.

HRC extends its sincere condolences to Ms. Reed’s family and friends.
