A recent video featuring queer-identified professional cuddler Christopher Ammon takes a look at the world of cuddling service Cuddlist.

Ammon calls the service, established in 2016, “the most accessible, reliable source of connection” and is enthusiastic about his work:

“A year ago I both came out of the closet and left the Mormon Church while appearing on MTV’s ‘The Real World,” Ammon told The Huffington Post. “I lost my family, my community… everything. It was devastating.”

He says that a friend introduced him to Cuddlist and paid for his cuddling training, which includes an in-person or online orientation training course and attending at least one Cuddle Party workshop, and subsequently, his life has changed.

“I now consider my clients to be some of my dearest friends,” he said. “Learning about their lives, their heartaches, their dreams… it helps me to better understand my own.”

According to a press release sent to HuffPost, Cuddlist’s mission is to “address touch deprivation in a safe, professional environment” by using “touch and non-sexual intimacy.” Sessions cost $80 an hour and the company has 80 professional cuddlers working in major cities across the United States. A clear set of guidelines provided by Cuddlist to clients makes sure “the cuddle session remains comfortable for both people.”

While the notion—and the name itself—of cuddling can seem lighthearted, the service’s benefits are billed as quite serious. Its proprietors view it a bulwark against depression and social isolation. Ammon frames it as a tool against the struggles that members of his community can often face:

“I want to be a part of the fight against LGBTQIA suicide,” he said. “What this does is that it actively fights against loneliness.”

HRC Mississippi Holds Legislative Hearing at the Capitol

HRC Mississippi Holds Legislative Hearing at the Capitol

Post submitted by HRC Faith Organizer Daniel Ball

HRC Mississippi, along with the ACLU of Mississippi, held a legislative hearing at the Capitol in support of comprehensive, non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. HRC Faith Organizer Daniel Ball was among the six representatives who argued their case in support of LGBTQ protections.

“The lack of explicit federal protections and the patchwork of state protections are inadequate, leaving LGBTQ people across our state vulnerable to discrimination,” Ball said. “In too many places, LGBTQ people are treated like second class citizens. We need comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people in core civil rights categories, including employment, housing, public spaces and services, education and federally funded programs.”

Thirty-one states, including Mississippi, still lack clear, fully inclusive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. Additionally, since there is no federal law that consistently protects LGBTQ people, LGBTQ people can still be denied a mortgage, credit card, student loan or other type of lending simply because of who they are. That’s why HRC endorsed the Equality Act.

HRC Mississippi was very pleased to see the level of support from our legislators and leaders. We, along with our coalition partners, are committed and driven to help develop comprehensive protections for LGBTQ Mississippians.

Tell Trump Administration: LGBTQ Seniors Matter!

Tell Trump Administration: LGBTQ Seniors Matter!

LGBTQ seniors urgently need your help to ensure that they are not erased from federal data collection.

Recently, in a major survey of older Americans, the Trump Administration struck a question that tracks LGBTQ seniors to ensure they are not excluded from critical taxpayer funded services, such as nutrition programs like meals-on-wheels, transportation services, family caregiver support, and other community and home-based programs.

The survey, called the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants, has included a question about sexual orientation for the past three years, but when the Department of Health and Human Services posted the upcoming 2017 survey, they inexplicably removed the question.

The survey has not yet been finalized, and the agency is required to solicit public comments on any changes.

We know that LGBTQ seniors face unique vulnerabilities, but if we do not collect data, policymakers and advocates can not know the extent of the problems they face to quantify their needs. Fill out this form and tell the Trump Administration to not erase LGBTQ seniors from this vital survey!

Chechnya President Fires Back at Reports That a ‘Purge’ of Gay Men is Underway

Chechnya President Fires Back at Reports That a ‘Purge’ of Gay Men is Underway

Ramzan Kadyrov

The leader of the southern Russian republic of Chechnya attacked international human rights organizations over the weekend, accusing them of spreading falsehoods regarding the detention, torture, and possible murder of hundreds of gay men in the country.

The AP reports:

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov said on his social media account Sunday that he had met with the region’s human rights council and proclaimed that rights have undergone a “grandiose” improvement in Muslim-majority Chechnya.

Kadyrov says international organizations are conducting a “massive information attack … using the most unworthy methods, reality is distorted, attempts are being made to blacken our society, lifestyle, traditions and customs.”

Meanwhile, crime Russia reports on a meeting between “Chechen clergy leaders and public figures” in the country over the situation (a bit of a tough translation, but quite a bit to read here – Novaya Gazeta was the paper that first broke the gay detention story):

At the conclusion of the meeting, a resolution was adopted declaring information about ‘cleansing’ gays in Chechnya “absolute lies and slander”. And its second point, according to the editors of Novaya Gazeta, states open calls for violence. The CrimeRussia quotes it unchanged.

“In view of the insult to the centuries-old foundations of Chechen society and the dignity of Chechen men, as well as our faith, we promise that the retribution will overtake true instigators, wherever and whomever they are, without a statute of limitations.”

In the fourth paragraph of the resolution, the meeting calls on “every sensible person to fight the spread of such baseness and provocation in all possible ways,” but it is noted in brackets that “possible ways” should be “lawful”.

Novaya Gazeta stresses that the main idea of the resolution “pushes religious fanatics towards massacre of journalists”.+

In its statement, the editorial staff urges the Russian authorities to give a legal assessment of the High Assembly of Islamic theologians and leaders of public opinion in Chechnya resolution and “do everything possible to stop actions aimed at inciting hatred and enmity towards journalists fulfilling their professional duties.”

Also in its statement the editors of Novaya Gazeta draw the attention of the authorities to the inaction of the Investigative Committee (ICR). 10 days since the publication of the facts on mass persecution of Chechen inhabitants because of their homosexual orientation expired on April 10, the newspaper notes.

According to the law, the ICR must respond to a report of a crime within ten days. In addition, on April 8, Novaya Gazeta editor in chief Dmitry Muratov appealed to Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika with a demand to oblige the ICR of the Russian Federation to verify the facts testifying to the commission of serious crimes.

But as by April 11, there was no any Investigative Committee’s reaction; lawyer of the Agora international human rights organization Andrey Sabinin filed a complaint with the Moscow Basmanny Court. The human rights activist demanded to recognize the inaction of ICR Chairman Alexander Bastrykin unreasonable and illegal and oblige him to eliminate the violation.

Where does Senator Dean Heller stand on Nevada's proposed bill banning “conversion therapy”?

Where does Senator Dean Heller stand on Nevada's proposed bill banning “conversion therapy”?

In the Nevada Assembly this year, a powerful bill is up for a vote which could ban the fraudulent practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” While Nevada could be the eighth state (plus Washington D.C) to ban this outdated and dangerous practice, Nevadans have the right to know where their U.S. Senator, Dean Heller, stands on this measure. Would Senator Heller support the idea of banning “conversion therapy” practices nationwide? Would he author or co-sponsor a similar bill in Washington, D.C.?

We could look at how he falls in line with the priorities of the Trump Administration. If this is the case, Senator Heller is 100 percent in line with all of President Trump’s wishes. He hasn’t weighed in on the Trump Administration’s choice to rescind rights for transgender students at schools nor responded to the possible executive order that would use “religious freedom” as a license to discriminate LGBTQ Nevadans.

Today could be his chance to shed light on the subject as Senator Dean Heller goes into his first public town hall in three months. And today could be his chance to distance himself from the Trump Administration and their history of erasing LGBTQ people from the fabric of our nation.

The horrific “conversation therapy” practice has been rebuked by every major mental health and medical organization in the United States. Senator Heller is in the position to lead on an issue that continues to put the lives of LGBTQ youth in jeopardy. He could send a powerful message to his assembly colleagues by supporting the rights of all Americans. Or, Senator Heller can continue to align himself with an administration that now has a history of erasing the LGBTQ community from our society.

Right now, these are the only seven states (plus Washington D.C.) in the nation that have implemented laws to prevent the horrific and discredited practice of conversion therapy:

  • New Jersey
  • California
  • Oregon
  • Illinois
  • New York
  • Vermont
  • New Mexico

At a time when federal officials and elected officials around the county are staying silent on LGBTQ issues, GLAAD will continue to advocate for expanded visibility in media interviews and public discussions like today’s town hall.
