VIDEO: Harry Shum Jr. and Matthew Daddario accept GLAAD Media Award for ‘Shadowhunters’
Freeform’s Shadowhunters took home the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Saturday. Stars Harry Shum Jr. and Matthew Daddario accepted the award, which was presented by actor and previous Vanguard Award recipient Josh Hutcherson.
Tune in to Logo TV on Thursday, April 6 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT to watch the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles!
“On the show, I play an openly proud bisexual warlock, who’s a person of color that’s in a relationship with a recently out gay shadowhunter,” said Shum, accepting the award. “I don’t think that combination has existed on television before […] I am proud to be a part of that progress.”
Shadowhunters, which features a relationship between gay shadowhunter Alec (Matthew Daddario) and bisexual warlock Magnus (Harry Shum Jr), stands out for its inclusion of a bisexual male in a central role when so few are seen on television. The drama, an adaptation of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, tells the story of a teenage girl thrown into a world of demons, magic, and magical creatures.
Additional awards will be presented at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City at the New York Midtown on May 6. Tickets are available now at glaad.org/mediaawards. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives. They also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community that build support for equality and acceptance.
