Bisexual singer Lady Gaga led the half time show at tonight’s Super Bowl LI with a medley of some of her biggest hits. Her set kicked off with a mashup of “God Bless America” and “This Land Is Your Land” with red and blue drones transforming into a visual of the American flag behind Gaga as she said, “One national under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” The medley lineup also included Gaga’s hit song “Born This Way” as she sung to the largest sports audience of the year, “no matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgender life, I’m on the right track baby.” Gaga, who last week was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award, was also featured in jewelry brand Tiffany’s advertisement. One of the first ads of Super Bowl LI was Coca-Cola’s “America is Beautiful” spot, which actually premiered at Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. The piece features families from all over the country, including two gay fathers roller-skating with their daughter. When the ad premiered, it was the first Super Bowl commercial to feature a gay family. “Including a gay family in this ad is not only a step forward for the advertising industry, but a reflection of the growing majority of Americans from all walks of life who proudly support their LGBTQ friends, family and neighbors as integral parts of ‘America the Beautiful,’” said GLAAD CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis at the time. Coca-Cola’s decision to re-air the ad this year is a timely reminder that all communities must stand together and resist powers which seek to divide us. Join GLAAD’s Together campaign now.

I find it profound that the leadership of this country has not been able to unify the people, so corporate America has taken it on. Hmmm…

Airbnb debuted their new ad campaign, “#WeAccept.” The ad shows a diverse group of people with text reading “We believe no matter who you are, where you’re from, who you love or who you worship, we all belong. The world is more beautiful the more you accept.”

Anheuser-Busch and 84 Lumber ran advertisements about immigrant stories. Busch’s ad focuses on the brand’s co-founder Adolphus Busch and his journey from Germany to St. Louis in 1857.  In 84 Lumber’s spot, a mother and daughter leave their home in Mexico and head for the U.S. border only to be blocked by a wall after the long journey. The daughter pulls out a handmade American flag, just as the two find a large door in the wall and walk through. The screen displays the text “The will to succeed is always welcome here.”

It’s a 10 Hair Care aired a spot highlighting a diverse group of people including those of color and with disabilities. Audi’s advertisement focused on equal pay for women. The Google Home ad included a shot of a home with a rainbow flag. Hamilton’s original Schuyler Sisters (Jasmine Cephas Jones, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Phillipa Soo) performed “America The Beautiful” prior to kick off, and updated the lyrics to include brotherhood “and sisterhood.”

Get acquainted with “Female Mimics,” the premiere drag queen glossy magazine from 1963

Dangerous Minds always finds intriguing pop-cultural artifacts, and this cachet of drag-themed magazines from the 1960s are no exception.

In fact, Female Mimics magazine was the first-ever glossy publication to focus on cross-dressers. Launched in ’63, the premiere issue profiled Kim August, a popular drag entertainer at the East Village’s 82 Club who was renowned for her impersonations of Bette Davis and Judy Garland. (The publication would continue to run its campy content under different names until 1979.)

The writing here is particularly curious, as it works overtime to present the subject matter through a supposedly “heterosexual” lens. For example, “Joi Fulnesse” was allegedly an autoworker from Detroit who would remove his work overalls to slip into gorgeous Dior creations after hours… or so the copywriter valiantly attempts to convince us:

Recently Joi Fulnesee’s wife gave him a Dior gown for a birthday gift. Joi spends his evenings gloriously gowned female attire. Can you imagine how surprised his co-workers at the auto plant would be?

Here’s a collection of highly vivid Female Mimics covers that span sixteen decades:
