DOJ Files Brief Undermining Protections of Transgender Students
The brief signals that the department, now led Jeff Sessions, could be changing its stance on the trans-affirming education guidelines issued by the Obama administration.
Los Angeles LGBT Center Vandalized with Anti-LGBT Slurs
The Los Angeles LGBT Center was defaced with anti-LGBT graffiti that read sometime on Thursday night, the organization reports:
The slurs painted on The Village at Ed Gould Plaza, near Santa Monica Blvd. and Highland Ave., included “F**k trannies” and “F**k all yall.”
“It happened sometime between 9 and 10 pm last night,” said Jackie DeFede, Director of Facilities at the Center. “We had a security officer on duty, but he was patrolling other areas of the building. Fortunately, we have cameras that should have recorded the perpetrators.” DeFede will be filing a police report and sharing video footage with the investigators.
Although this is not the first time the Center has been vandalized, it is the worst case of vandalism targeting a Center facility in recent history. By 11:30 am Center staff had painted over the slurs.
“He flips on pretty much everything he says,” he said. “Saying it’s settled law — that doesn’t mean anything.”
It seems Obergefell’s distrust was well founded, as we begin to see how LGBTQ rights are likely to wind up on the chopping block in the not too distant future.
Congress could also pass the First Amendment Defense Act, which would also allow for discrimination against the LGBTQ community, by protecting those who would refuse goods and services based on the beliefs that: “(1) marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or (2) sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.”
Providing a religious carve out to equal protections under the law could mean that while you get to stay married, you may find your rights in areas like employment, healthcare, housing, and private business quickly disappearing.
The star of the whimsical USA reality television show Chrisley Knows Besthas said in an interview that he is comfortable with rumors about his sexuality.
Speaking with radio host Domenick Nati this week, the 47-year-old Atlanta millionaire realtor and fashion enthusiast asserted that he and his wife of 21 years, Julie, are “flattered” by the speculation.
“In order for it to disappoint me, it would mean that I don’t agree with someone being gay,” Chrisley, 47, said on the radio program, “I don’t believe that’s a choice that you make. I believe that you are the way that God has made you.”
Along with their five children, the couple are featured in what Variety has dubbed a cross between The Beverly Hillbillies and The Brady Brunch with a “brightly dressed elephant in the room,”now in its fifth season. Chrisley has previously declared that “I don’t live in a closet.”
While Chrisley laid it on a little thick by claiming that the ambiguity in how his sexuality is perceived means “people think I can get laid on both ends,” not responding with defensiveness to the stereotypes is refreshing.
Tennessee ‘Marriage Defense Act’ Filed, Defines Marriage as Man and Woman
Tennessee lawmakers have reintroduced a “Natural Marriage Defense Act” that aims to define marriage as between one man and woman in spite of judicial decisions to the contrary. It claims that same-sex marriage is unlawful and all efforts to implement it in Tennessee “remain unlawful and should be resisted.”
A similar attempt was defeated last year due to its being unenforceable in light of current federal law, and its same sponsors, Rep. Mark Pody and Sen. Mae Beavers, are also behind this new bill. Despite leading a joint town hall this week, each dismissed attempts to question them about the bill in favor of discussing an unrelated gas tax issue.
