Mike Pence is set to become the most antigay incoming Vice President in modern history, and according to WJLA, his new D.C. neighbors aren’t so keen on having a known homophobe on their block.

Ilse Heintzen lives just down the block from the house where Pence is currently staying as he waits to move into the Vice President’s mansion on the grounds of the Naval Observatory. After learning Pence was moving to the neighborhood, she and some of her neighbors decided to take a stand against his hateful views… by hanging colorful rainbow flags outside their houses.

“A respectful message showing, in my case, my disagreement with some of his thinking,” she tells WJLA.

In case you need a brief recap: Not only did Pence pass that awful law in Indiana allowing businesses to legally discriminate against LGBTQ people on religious grounds, but he also supports gay conversion therapy and, of course, is very opposed to gay marriage.

“I have no idea what [the Vice-President Elect] will think about,” Heintzen says, “but I hope he will change his mind.”

According to the news station, there are about a dozen rainbow flags flying around the block, and more are said to be coming.

“This is one way that I can show my disagreement,” said Heintzen.

Appeals Court Considers Indiana Gay Workplace Discrimination Case: VIDEO

The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday reheard oral arguments in the case of an Indiana college math instructor who was allegedly denied promotion and ultimately fired for being a lesbian.

Kimberly Hively’s case dates to 2009 when someone reported seeing her kiss her girlfriend goodbye in a car in the campus parking lot at Ivy Tech Community College in South Bend. The next day an administrator allegedly reprimanded her for “sucking face” and admonished her for being unprofessional.

In August 2014, Hively filed a lawsuit against the college claiming the school violated Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act when they denied her full-time employment and promotions on the basis of her sexual orientation. The trial court dismissed Hively’s claim, ruling that Title VII does not protect employees from anti-gay discrimination.

In July of this year, the Seventh Circuit rejected an appeal filed by Lambda Legal to reverse the lower court’s ruling and to reinstate Hively’s complaint against the school.

In that ruling, Circuit Judge Ilana Rovner said it was difficult to justify denying employment protections to LGBT people following the Supreme Court’s decision striking down state bans on gay marriage. However, Rovner said the court was bound by a “confused hodge-podge” of decisions dating back to the 1980s in which the 7th Circuit dismissed discrimination claims by gay workers.

Reuters reports that the full 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago will now consider Hively’s appeal of that decision and has the power to reverse previous decisions.

The Obama administration has submitted court briefs on Hively’s behalf. Yesterday, a lawyer from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) joined Lambda Legal’s Greg Nevins in arguing her case.

According to the Washington Blade, following the hearing EEOC Commissioner Chai Feldblum said:

“The term ‘sex,’ as it was interpreted in 1964, should have been interpreted right then to include sexual orientation, because when you discriminate against someone based on sexual orientation, you are taking sex into account. … The courts are now beginning to see that the term ‘sex’ [for example] includes treating a male who is involved with another man differently than a man who is involved with a woman. It’s a very commonsense legal argument that the EEOC set forth in an opinion in 2015.”

Nevins said that although every appeals court to consider the issue has ruled that Title VII does not protect gay employees, judges have become more receptive to revising the law in recent years.

While federal law does not explicitly bar workplace discrimination against LGBT people, 22 states prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. All efforts to pass a federal law protecting gay people from job discrimination have so far failed.

GLAAD launches Trump Accountability Project

GLAAD launches Trump Accountability Project

GLAAD

GLAAD today launched the Trump Accountability Project (TAP). This resource is geared towards journalists, editors, producers, and other news makers reporting on the Trump administration which tracks the anti-LGBTQ statements and actions of Donald Trump and those in or being considered for his administration. TAP also catalogues other discriminatory and hateful statements made by Trump and his appointees.

“Since Donald Trump’s rise to president-elect, we have seen an unprecedented amount of misinformation and blatant lies go unquestioned and unchallenged in national news media,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “The rampant misinformation promulgated by Trump and those in his circle often contributes to a climate of hostility that puts marginalized communities in harm’s way. The Trump Accountability Project will shine a spotlight of truth on the hateful records of individuals who are or may be participating in the upcoming administration.”

Based on GLAAD’s successful Commentator Accountability Project, TAP will equip journalists, as well as everyday people, to hold Trump and his administration accountable for their words and actions. It will also serve as a reminder that many in the incoming administration have blatantly pledged to dismantle the legal protections that LGBTQ people, as well as other communities, have achieved over the past several years.

TAP will include first-hand statements, video, and/or audio to document the animus displayed by people being appointed to or considered for positions of power in the Trump administration. GLAAD will update the profiles with new statements that disparage LGBTQ people, women, Muslims, immigrants, and many others.

“All too-often, journalists on deadline don’t have the time or resources to fully uncover the detestable history of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and voting records of many people in Trump’s circle,” continued Ellis. “This project will put this critical information into the hands of newsrooms, editors, hosts, and reporters so that they may better report on and challenge the hateful actions and statements of those they are covering.”

Neighbors of Vice President-Elect Mike Pence are coming out in solidarity against his anti-gay views and hanging rainbow flags on the fronts of their houses, WJLA reports:

“A respectful message showing, in my case, my disagreement with some of his thinking,” said Ilse Heintzen.

The ‘he’ Heintzen is referring to is Vice-President Elect Mike Pence. Pence moved into a house on Heintzen’s block where he will stay on-and-off until he moves into the Vice-President’s mansion on the grounds of the Naval Observatory next year.

Neighbors started hanging the pride flags after the VP-Elect moved in because the LGBTQ community has criticized Pence’s policies regarding LGBTQ rights.

Pence’s block now features at least six Pride flags with “more on the way” according to WJLA.
