The Coming Republican Healthcare Nightmare–And How to Fight It

Republican Healthcare

Trump-empowered Republicans are planning to shut down Obamacare first thing next year, even though they say that people won’t lose their actual plans for two to four years. They’re also looking to change or cut Medicaid and Medicare. More than 100 million Americans are covered under one of these three plans, including the better part of the 1 million-plus people living with HIV/AIDS. What will happen now?

Here, Towleroad’s new counter-Trump channel Daily Resist talks with queer health activist Matt Kavanagh of Health GAP and of UPenn’s Center for Public Health Initiatives. He was among 11 activists who got arrested on Dec 1, World AIDS Day, for refusing to leave the premises outside House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office, bearing signs reading “Ryan’s Healthcare Dream is a Nightmare for People with HIV.” Here, he talks about how Republicans are planning to slice and dice health programs, what you can do to stop (or at least to slow) them, and how the changes might affect LGBTQ people.daily resist

What are your top worries?

MK: The 2017 House budget pretty much tells you what Speaker Paul Ryan and [anti-LGBT, anti-abortion] incoming health secretary Tom Price are planning–and it’s terrifying. They’re looking to block-grant Medicaid, turning it over to states so they can do what they want with it, reducing eligibility and coverage. It’s highly like that over time federal funding for Medicaid will decrease substantially. The plan is to get the federal government out of the business of providing health care altogether.

And if I were to play devil’s advocate and ask what’s wrong with that?

If you live in a state with a progressive government like New York, Massachusetts, California, Washington or Colorado, then you’re probably fine. They’ve already expanded Medicaid eligibility under Obamacare funding and they’ll likely want to maintain Medicaid as it is, putting in their own state money. They’ll also continue to prohibit discrimination based on LGBT or HIV status, which Obamacare now does across the board.

But if you’re in the 19 states that didn’t expand Medicaid under Obamacare, they’ve already signaled they’re not interested in serving poor or LGBT people or those living with HIV and they’re certainly not going to put up state funding. In those states, we’ll likely see the eligibility criterial for Medicaid going way up to exclude all but the poorest of the poor who also have disabilities or are pregnant. We’ll see the income cap on Medicaid plunge from somewhere around $30-40,000 currently back down to $10-20,000. That’s really scary. The federal government will no longer tell these states they have to provide a bare minimum of care.

All this likely would start happening in October 2017, which is the beginning of Fiscal Year 2018. And in those states, this means that if you lose your private Obamacare plan, you’ll also lose access to that expanded Medicaid funding.

republican healthcare

States in red only give Medicaid to the very poorest with disabilities or a pregnancy.

Republicans are saying they’ll dismantle Obamacare immediately but let people stay on their plans for another two to four years while solutions are developed. What solutions?

Trump and his ilk have proposed allowing people to buy plans across state lines. But there is too much market failure in a totally privatized system. They’ll also repeal Obamacare’s minimum standards of care, states will regulate their plans differently, and it’ll be even harder than it is now for consumers to make heads or tails of different plans.

Obamacare also mandates that employers with more than 50 workers give them insurance, so we’ll be losing that piece of it, too.

And what about Medicare, which serves people ages 65 and up?

The Republican plan is basically to turn it into Obamacare, making it more privatized, where people over 65 get vouchers, kind of like the current Obamacare subsidies, and are left to the mercy of the open market. But older and sicker people haven’t done well on the open Obamacare markets. So many insurance companies have left the market because there are too many expensive sick people.

What are the specific worries for LGBT people?

Obamacare (formally known as the Affordable Care Act) outlaws discrimination based on many factors including sex discrimination, which the Obama administration has interpreted to include sexual orientation and gender identity. It’s the first time queer people have had national protection. Plans can’t block you because they suspect you’re at higher risk for HIV or for transgender-related services. That goes away when Obamacare is repealed.

This is a nightmare for people living with HIV, going back to relying solely on the Ryan White Act’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which was so underfunded in the 2000s under Bush that hundreds of people were on waiting lists for lifesaving drugs in several states. Obamacare fixed that because it offered people with HIV total health plans, not just HIV drugs and care, and it used ADAP to pay their premiums. That won’t be possible anymore.

Is ADAP funding imperiled?

Yes. It’s part of Ryan White, which is discretionary spending, and the House Budget has said it wants to cut $100 billion from these kinds of programs that help poor people over the next ten years.

So other than people in progressive states and those with HIV hopefully still getting bare-bones meds and care…where will everyone else’s health care come from? The federally funded community health centers?

It’ll likely be more like the current situation is right now in Kansas with various publicly or privately funded organizations providing minimal care, which is great if you have the flu, but if you have cancer or a chronic condition, you’re fucked.

Is there any way to fight this pre-inauguration?

The Republicans are planning to use the budget reconciliation process to push these cuts through first thing next year, then again later in the year. They can’t be filibustered. We don’t have a lot of time. Right now we have to start making our electeds understand that it’s going to be incredibly painful for millions of people if they take these actions. Whether Obamacare stays or goes comes down to only about three Republican senators–likely the most moderate, Susan Collins in Maine, Rob Portman in Ohio and Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania.

republican healthcare

Maine Senator Susan Collins (right) is among the few Republicans who can stop major harm to health programs.

How do we reach them right away?

On one hand, we need an outpouring of smart strategic citizen advocacy that lobbies them, writes letters to them, thinks about their motivations like being reelected and shows them we won’t stand by.

The other thing is direct action: These politicians are people and we can get to them and hold them personally responsible through creative actions. I loved when ACT UP covered Jesse Helms’ house in a giant condom. It calls out the bad actors.

How do you reach moderates and potential allies like Collins, though?

You appeal to them to do what’s right. LGBT people need to be standing right now with teachers, farmers, and small business owners, because a broad show of support for reps like Collins doing the right thing could be really powerful. They’ll likely be in their home districts over the holiday break, so just call to find when they’re in and go in and talk to them. That’s what they’re there for.

What should we be asking of Democrats right now?

They need to use every procedural process they have to stop or slow Republican movement. You can’t filibuster the budget reconciliation bill, but you can use it on everything else. As for budget stuff, Democrats showed rare backbone earlier this year when they conducted a day-long sit-in to freeze floor motion until there was action on gun control. Hopefully we’ll see more of that.

Republicans have ruthlessly obstructed Obama’s agenda the past eight years. Do you think Dems are capable of being that ruthless?

I certainly hope so. They’ve been far too accommodating. They need to finally stand up and fight, and if they don’t, we have to vote them out.

What do you read daily to keep up on health stuff?

The Kaiser Health News Morning Update. I also follow Kaiser’s Jen Kates. She’s great.

Sexy anti-Trump underwear is officially a thing

Sexy anti-Trump underwear is officially a thing

donald-underwear

Soon, you’ll be able to buy some skimpy boxer-briefs featuring an unflattering caricature of Donald Trump. While it’s not altogether certain what wearing them says about you or will accomplish in the grand scheme of things… hooray?

We’ll admit: It’s difficult to imagine wearing these will win you big points with your sexual partner or — awkward — your primary-care physician. And honestly, we’re not altogether sure how we’d feel about an image of Trump rubbing up against our crotch all day. But probably not great?

vveqmz

The masterminds behind the underwear have unveiled a Kickstarter campaign, and a pair can be yours for $25. (For $1,875, you can purchase 100 pairs and they’ll “send a tweet to @realDonaldTrump.”)

They describe the product as featuring “a fat buffoon yelling into the abyss, holding a megaphone in his teeny-tiny hands. ‘Blah blah blah blah blah’ is written all over.”

Related: Donald Trump erupts on Twitter after scathing review of namesake restaurant

They also note that the horizontal fly allows you to slide your member out of the area shaped like Trump’s mouth, which is faintly terrifying and we need to sit down. But if you’ve ever imagined Donald Trump opening his mouth only to have your penis flop out, well, you’re in luck. You’re also pretty gross.

Related: Is There A Shady Secret Message On TIME’s Donald Trump Cover?

Here’s why they decided the world needed a pair of Trump-flavored boxer-briefs:

The election left us stunned, like most Americans, and the horror of reality set in shortly thereafter. We are still in shock. Presumably, so are many others who care about equal rights and justice for all, whether they are Black, White, Asian, Muslim, Mexican, part of the LGBTQ+ community or other. With our moods mired knowing the positive progress has been halted, we wanted to create a pair….

Throughout the campaign, the founders will make personal donations to the causes listed below — the causes that the incoming administration should be for, but is against. You are welcome to let us know which projects you care about the most. Please note that no funds raised on Kickstarter will go towards charitable organizations as per Kickstarter policy (disclaimer). The founders however will make personal donations to these causes on behalf of Mr. Donald Trump, Mike Pence and Paul Ryan, and send donation certificates to their respective offices. Plus, we’ll tweet @realDonaldTrump with each $5 and above pledge.

The men behind the campaign will be donating to Planned Parenthood, the Trevor Project for LGBTQ Youth, Refugee Assistance Project, NAACP Legal Defense and Education, and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Okay, so maybe we’ll buy a few pairs after all.

NEW MUSIC: Laura Palmer, Joan of Arc, Sun Airway, Vaults

NEW MUSIC: Laura Palmer, Joan of Arc, Sun Airway, Vaults

joan-of-arc

This week in New Music: Dutch act Laura Palmer making shoegaze indie rock, a hypnotic return from Joan of ArcSun Airway‘s new track “Foam” is a electro-wizardry with a heavy dose of indie fuzz and London trio Vaults capitalize on their John Lewis Christmas ad soundtrack.

Laura Palmer – “Event Horizon”

laura-palmerYou hear of a new band called Laura Palmer and you immediately think someone is trying to cash in on the Twin Peaks revival.

However, Netherlands nugaze outfit Laura Palmer have been around since 2012 and really, who cares one way or the other when the music is this good.

Shoegaze / nugaze bands are two-a-penny but Laura Plamer are the real deal.

In their own words:

Laura Palmer’s music can be characterized as Nugaze. Laura combines layered guitars, drum machines and electronics into well structured melodic songs…anyway she tries. Influenced by Joy Division and new wave bands like The Cure, The Sound and Echo & The Bunnymen, Laura produces a wall of sound in a dynamic and melodic kind of way. In addition to this Laura mixes more or less early nineties shoegaze and modern post rock influences. The outcome is surprisingly authentic and real!

Have a listen to latest track “Event Horizon” below.

Joan of Arc – “Full Moon and Rainbo Repair”

joan-of-arcJoan of Arc (above and right) is a band that you can always count on to do something different. In that respect they are comparable to the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Xiu Xiu.

With their first album in five years due out in January 2017, Joan of Arc have issued lead track “Full Moon And Rainbo Repair.” Always evolving and experimenting with new sounds and techniques, the track is a tribute to Chicago, the city where Joan of Arc members are based.

For Joan of Arc, ‘Full Moon And Rainbo Repair’ is a somewhat subdued affair as Tim Kinsella riffs on the idea that “you don’t get to know things I don’t know.”

In Kinsella’s words:

Everyone that’s ever been in a band knows how funny the first, thrown-off, working title of a song can be compared to what that song evolves into. This song is forever known between us as “Jay Z.” The seed of the song was Melina’s first ever guitar riff. And we wanted to make a sort of love song to Chicago, anthem kind of thing. But it ended up tilting toward being a love song about Chicago. I imagine the man singing it somewhere between Steve Buscemi’s character on Boardwalk Empire and Van Morrison’s “Linden Arden.”

You can preorder album He’s Got The Whole This Land Is Your Land In His Hands now through Joyful Noise.

Have a listen to the track below.

Sun Airway – “Foam”

sun-airwaySun Airway is the project of Philadelphia native Jon Barthmus.

Last heard from in 2012 with the dreamy, hypnotic electronic crossover album Soft Fall, Barthmus has announced new single “Foam” which is taken from forthcoming album Heraldic Black Cherry.

While Barthmus’s first album as Sun Airway, 2010’s Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier was favourably comparable to Sin Fang Bous’ playful electronic wizardry, as was Soft Fall, there’s always been an indie fuzz hum to his sound and that takes precedence on “Foam.”

It’s essentially indie fuzz with electronic flourishes, it’s immediately accessible and it’s gorgeous.

Vaults – Caught In Still Life

vaultsIn the UK, the Christmas ad for retailer John Lewis is quite the big thing and almost guarantees success for whomever is chosen for that year’s soundtrack. Previous years have seen Tom Odell (2014), Aurora (2015) and Lily Allen (2013).

Each year, an artist takes a well-known song and provides a usually schmaltzy but kinda lovely cover for the Christmas ad.

This year that honor goes to Vaults with their cover of “One Day I’ll Fly Away” which is also included on their debut album Caught In Still Life.

The London-based trio have been on the go for quite a few years now. There is the chance that the John Lewis cover could overshadow everything else but let’s hope that people are moved enough by the ad to go out and buy the album.

Caught In Still Life is decidedly commercial electropop with a depth provided by the massive vocals of Blythe Pepino.

There are shirtless moments, and then there are the best shirtless moments. A list assembled this week by PEOPLE magazine is certanily the latter.

Hopefully, emotions ran high and someone got slapped by the water cooler.

The magazine has just published what they’re calling “A Definitive Ranking Of Nick Jonas’ Best Shirtless Moments,” and we’ve taken it upon ourselves to peruse the images, discuss them amongst ourselves, and give each photo or GIF our own grade.

You can see for yourself that all the images are shirtless

But are they shirtless enough?

Let’s decide together.

Watch LIVE: NC Lawmakers Convene for Possible Repeal of HB2

Watch LIVE: NC Lawmakers Convene for Possible Repeal of HB2

The North Carolina General Assembly is meeting this morning in a special session for a possible repeal of the anti-LGBT ‘bathroom bill’ HB2.

UPDATE: The House is now in recess until 11:45 am. Senate out until 11:30. GOP caucusing.

In related developments, the Charlotte City Council met early Wednesday morning after the NC GOP complained that it hadn’t repealed every provision of the LGBT non-discrimination ordinance demanded by them to repeal HB2, the Charlotte Observer reports:

The city council, meeting early Wednesday, voted 7-2 to redo its Monday vote following reports that some legislators were unwilling to vote for a repeal of HB2 because the council did not repeal the entirety of its ordinance.

City officials insisted that Monday’s action had removed all provisions that legislators had objected to. “The City Council acted in good faith to do everything that it understood was necessary to facilitate the repeal of HB2,” the city said in a statement after the vote.

But the vote Wednesday fully repealed the changes made in the February ordinance.

It remains uncertain whether GOP lawmakers will follow through with their promise.

HRC Holds Mississippi LGBTQ Workplace Inclusion Business Summit in Jackson

Earlier this month, HRC held its first ever business summit focused on LGTBQ workplace inclusion in Jackson, Mississippi. The event, The Future of Workplace Inclusion, provided an opportunity for corporate leaders to learn about the business and economic development case for equality. Participants also learned best practices for making their business or organization fully inclusive of LGBTQ people.

Baker Donelson Law Firm sponsored and hosted the event, and the participants included businesses and organizations from across the state. Other sponsors included Chevron, Mississippi Power, Sanderson Farms, Wells Fargo Advisors, Ingalls Shipbuilding, Entergy, Hope Credit Union, the Else School of Management at Millsaps, Pritchett Engineering and Bradley Arant Law Firm.

Representatives from Baker Donelson kicked off the event with a presentation on the legal landscape for LGBTQ workplace inclusion. During this session, participants were briefed on the current trends and legal standards related to sexual orientation, gender stereotypes and gender identity in the workplace.

Beck Bailey, Deputy Director of Employee Engagement at HRC Foundation, then presented HRC’s climate research and the importance of LGBTQ workplace inclusion. The event took place just days after HRC released the 2017 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), the premier national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to LGBTQ employees. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn more about the CEI and how to improve their organizations’ ratings.

After presenting, Bailey moderated a panel of experts from Entergy and Ingalls Shipbuilding. The panel included Amanda Vallejo, Diversity & Inclusion Manager and EEO Compliance, Huntington Ingalls and Dakin Dubroc, Director of Organizational Health & Diversity, Entergy. These industry leaders shared their perspectives and lessons they have learned from diversity and inclusion efforts at their respective companies and their successes implementing LGBTQ initiatives.

If you like seeing how rich people live/you will never live, Neil has invited Vogue to wander his estate.

“I wanted it to be like an adventurer’s club with a genius bar inside,” he said. He also gets in a plug for A Series of Important Events, while standing amidst various trophies he’s won. Across from that, he has the actual booth from How I Met Your Mother, surrounded by toys.

There’s a picture of Elton John hanging over the staircase, and upstairs there’s a living room with a bar and a lot of dark wood paneling. There is also a robot parrot, and some Teleflora-looking arrangement on a coffee table. And then — oh no — he raps a bit from Hamilton, complete with hand gestures.

Their Christmas tree is wrapped in gold — real gold? Who knows.

Eerie Jill Greenberg portraits of their kids loom over the stairs to the next floor. He has a guest book next to the door, and when you sign it, you get to pick something out of what looks like a card catalogue. The Vogue rep gets a book of pumpkins that look like penises.

A 56-year-old gay man in England has opened up about a vicious homophobic attack that left him unconscious.

David Ryan was walking home from a pub in Henstridge, Somerset last New Year’s Eve when he was attacked by boxer and cage fighter Keith Moult (above), who was sentenced to prison after a three day trial.

Moult shouted homophobic slurs at Ryan before punching and kicking him until he fell to the ground. The brutal assault continued as Moult beat Ryan until his victim lost consciousness.

Ryan was left on the ground in freezing temperatures but was rescued by a navy pilot who called emergency services.

henstridgeSWNS reports that following Moult’s sentencing, Ryan said:

“I’d moved to Henstridge from London. I wanted to retire here eventually. I had a job in Yeovil hospital, I’d made some friends and I wanted to spend the rest of my life here. But after he was jailed, people told me I’d need to watch my back. It made me very anxious. I was so afraid that I was going home after work, running to my front door and bolting myself in my own home. It was like being a prisoner. It destroyed me. I gave up my job, my home and I went back to London. Nobody should be attacked like that – gay, straight, lesbian – if you are attacked or abused, it needs to be reported. I thought – I’m a gay man. No-one is going to care about this. But I was wrong. Everyone took it very seriously. And I hope by speaking out like this, people in the LGBT community who might have been afraid to come forward will know that it is safe for them to do so. That they’ll be taken seriously. And people like him will know that they can’t get away with doing things like this to people.”

According to The Sun, Moult was sentenced to 18 months in prison for assault after a three day trial at Taunton Crown Court.

Ryan has asked that well-wishers make a small donation to the Terrence Higgins Trust, The Samaritans or St John Ambulance.
