National Geographic Features Young Transgender Girl on Cover

Avery Jackson, a young transgender girl featured in HRC’s Moms for Transgender Equality video series, is on the cover of National Geographic’s new special issue on the “Gender Revolution.”

“The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy,” Avery says, in a quoted on the cover.

Avery’s mother, Debi Jackson, was the subject of one of HRC’s Moms for Transgender Equality videos and is a member of HRC’s groundbreaking Parents for Transgender Equality Council.

The issue shares stories of transgender and gender-expansive youth, as well as the impact their families, friends and communities have had on their transition. National Geographic visited 80 homes on more than four continents to collect these vital stories.

The issue also features Trinity Neal, whose mother, DeShanna Neal, is another member of HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. The Council is a coalition of the nation’s leading parent-advocates working for equality and fairness for transgender people. Click here to join.

As it is customary with many subscription magazines, there are two covers of the special issue. The issue that is being mailed to subscribers features Avery on the cover and the one on newsstands features a group photo. Both contain the same content inside the magazine.

The digital copy of the magazine will be available on January 3.

In September, HRC partnered with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians to release Supporting and Caring for Transgender Children, a guide explaining what experts know about supporting our youngest transgender and gender-expansive kids, especially those in elementary school.

Last year, HRC partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Gender Spectrum, the ACLU and the National Education Association on Schools in Transition, a groundbreaking guide for K-12 administrators, teachers and parents. The guide describes the legal landscape for transgender students, discusses crucial policies that affect students’ daily experiences, and offers advice for working with families who aren’t yet supportive of their child’s identity.

Louisiana AG Opposed to LGBT Rights: I Love My Gay Brother But ‘The Law’ Matters More – WATCH

jeff landry

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) is speaking out about his fight against LGBT rights and how that impacts his relationship with his gay brother.

Earlier this week, Landry won a victory against Governor John Bel Edwards (D) when a federal judge struck down Bel Edwards’ executive order granting non-discrimination protections to LGBT state workers. Landry praised the decision.

Meanwhile Landry’s brother, Nicholas Landry, has been a vocal LGBT rights activist and said in November that he has essentially become estranged from his family over his brother’s battle against equality.

In a video posted on YouTube, Landry says, “My coming out process was not the easiest time, and now that I’m standing on my own, I know I can’t sit silent anymore.”

He added, “I’m not really into politics (but) Jeffrey is suing…to block the right for equal marriage and equal rights in the state of Louisiana… It’s that kind of hatred and that kind of bigotry and that type kind of discrimination that is, just, uncalled for.”

When asked by WGNO’s Susan Roesgen about how he would feel if his brother were discriminated against for being gay, Landry said, “I love my brother, that’s unquestionable… (but) what I tell him is that we have to respect the law.  We have to respect the Constitution.”

Several parents are pissed after their children’s school bus drivers handed out antigay pamphlets opposing marriage equality disguised as Christmas cards.

The incident happened just outside of Melbourne earlier this week. Up to ten–yes, ten–drivers may have been involved in the scheme. The drivers distributed the gold envelopes to the children, then instructed them to give them to their parents.

“Somebody got [on] the school bus yesterday at the school with gift-wrapped packages with these Marriage Alliance flyers in them,” Natalie, the older sister of a 13-year-old student, tells Buzzfeed.

The man entered the bus and handed the gold envelopes to the driver, who then gave them to students. The outside of the cheery envelopes read ‘To the wonderful people who care for me every day – Merry Christmas!” So the 13-year-old brought it home to his parents.

“They thought, ‘oh it’s wrapped, it must be a Christmas card or something’, and it wasn’t.”

Instead, it was a Marriage Alliance flyer warning parents that their children could be taught about gender and sexual diversity without parental consent or knowledge if same-sex marriage is legalized in Australia and that anti-bullying programs in schools were simply covers to “promote gender ideology.”

“If you’re going to hand out something like that, hand it out in the school newsletter or something,” Natalie says. “Don’t gift wrap it!”

School officials were quick to distance themselves from the incident, saying the pamphlet “does not represent the school’s position on marriage equality” and that they are “working with families to say that won’t happen again.”

As for Marriage Alliance, the hate group that printed the pamphlets, it too claims to have had absolutely, positively nothing to do with the incident.

“Marriage Alliance has been made aware that a volunteer was recently handing out flyers on buses in Victoria,” a spokesperson said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. “This was not an action that was part of a campaign from Marriage Alliance and is not condoned or endorsed by Marriage Alliance. This action was taken by an individual who has since been contacted regarding this matter.”

190-Strong Business Coalition Warns Tennessee Lawmakers Against Anti-Gay Legislation

tennessee-thrives

A group of more than 190 businesses in Tennessee have joined together to warn lawmakers against enacting anti-gay laws that could harm the state’s economy.

Businesses who have signed on to the Tennessee Thrives coalition include the Methodist Le Bonheur hospital in Memphis, the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, HCA, Bridgestone Arena, the Tennessee Aquarium, The Tennessean, the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the Knoxville News Sentinel. The coalition has raised $100,000 for marketing tied to the initiative.

According to Butch Spyridon, CEO of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp., no businesses that have been approached have declined to become involved.

The Tennessean reports that CMT President Brian Philips said: “When everything is going so well, when there is so much opportunity and potential for prosperity, why would we throw a wrench into the works by sending out a message of exclusion?”

— Tennessee Thrives (@TNThrives) December 14, 2016

The coalition’s concerns stem from attempts to pass an anti-trans “bathroom bill” and a successful bill that allows therapists to not serve clients whose cases conflict with their principles.

Signed by Governor Bill Haslam, that law’s passage led to the cancellation of meetings in Tennessee by three groups, including the American Counseling Association’s conference.

During the 2016 legislative session, executives from 60 businesses signed a letter sent to Republican leaders, sharing their concerns with the “bathroom bill.”

However, Dale Walker, president of the Tennessee Pastors Network, has said he is disappointed that Republican lawmakers have decided to drop the anti-trans bill.

Walker said:

“We don’t feel like a child from a Christian family that goes to school should have to be faced with a situation of that nature, somebody who is transgender wanting to come in and use that bathroom.”

He added that the corporate sector should consider the revenue that evangelical groups and church-goers bring to states’ economies.

“Churches and Christians can play this game too,” he said. “Churches can pull conventions. They don’t have to come to Nashville to spend their money, or any big city for that matter, that is not family friendly.”

Bianca Del Rio on Hollywood, the election, and her new Logo specials

Bianca Del Rio on Hollywood, the election, and her new Logo specials

_mg_2050

Bianca Del Rio may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of holiday TV, but on Dec. 15th Logo premieres Not Today, Bianca, a pair of back-to-back specials starring the RuPaul’s Drag Race champ. The half-hour comedies follow the New York transplant as she tries to take over Hollywood, spreading a little Christmas shade along the way. Ms. Del Rio busted out her rolodex of hate to recruit a who’s-who of fabulous guest stars, including Kristen Johnston, Coco Peru, Tori Spelling and Charo. Queerty caught up with Del Rio to chat about her new hybrid reality-sitcom, doing stand-up post-election, and how many times a queen can get away with grabbing Tori Spelling’s tits.

How is Hollywood treating you?
When I’m there it’s great. It was one of those things where it wasn’t a conscious choice. It wasn’t like, Well, let me take over Hollywood! I was living in New York, living in a studio apartment, and then Drag Race kind of threw my life into a frenzy. And traveling in and out of New York was pretty intense and my lease was up, so I just went, Ok, you know what? I’ve been to Los Angeles, it’s been fun. There’s space there. I can breathe there. My dogs will be happier there, and I’ll try it for a year. And now it’s been a year and a half. It’s been quite lovely. When you’re traveling the world, you come home and it’s always sunny!

When I heard that you had a couple of comedy specials coming up, I was expecting stand-up.
Well, the reason why it’s called a “special” is because we didn’t want to call them episodes. I was concerned initially about people assuming [it would be stand-up]. I’m currently traveling with my show, Not Today, Satan, which I’m gonna film in Canada next year. But it wasn’t a conscious choice not to do stand-up. We were like, Let’s create a new situation for me to be in. Also, this was something that’s a little more PG, as opposed to my regular stand-up which is a little more racy.

These “specials” kind of play like back-to-back pilots.
Yes. You know, Logo has been amazing to me, they’re very kind, and they’re the ones who were interested in doing something with me. We spoke several times about what we thought we could do. I didn’t want to do a talk show, because I think that’s been done to death. And also it’s too censoring. You have a guest and you have to be nice to them, so that’s kind of awkward. But here was this creative idea that came up once World of Wonder got involved. They said, “Why don’t we just do a play on your life?” You know, my life heightened to an extent. We never make reference to me out of drag, we never deal with me out of drag, so it’s not autobiographical. It’s a lot of poking fun at myself and everyone that’s around me. If it works there’s the possibility of more to come.

I’m surprised you didn’t want to do a talk show.
Well, first of all when you’re dealing with something like Logo, when you’re creating a show like that, to do something live, to do something every day obviously is a lot more money and a lot more time consuming. If it were HBO or Comedy Central maybe it would be different. But with Logo I was interested in doing something that I thought would be totally fun and once World of Wonder came on it just made everything a lot easier. I think with their programming, it’s something they can air more than once. And a live talk show is pretty intense.

The format is interesting. It’s like a mock-reality show and there are some interviews as well. What were your models for the kind of show you wanted to make?
Well, none of it was really scripted. It was all outlined—they call it “hybrid reality.” And for us it was just being thrown into a room with this idea. Which is one of the things that I enjoy most, just pulling things out of my ass. It’s fascinating for me to watch it now and see how much of what was not scripted became part of the show. There were pivotal things that I had to say to keep things moving, but it was fascinating how much of that was cut and yet it just kept the stupidity that I brought to it. But really there was no model. I was in very good hands with the brilliant John Hill and Tom Campbell, who’s one of the main creators of Drag Race and a voice within. I met him many years ago and he gets me. So we were just in a room and all of this madness just evolved. There were no rules. We knew we wanted it to move quickly and just wanted it to be as random as possible.

So it sounds like improv played a big part in the show.
Yes, that was the whole point of it for me. It’s pressure and time and being in the moment. We knew what we had to get across. We knew we had to get from point A to point B, but that was the freedom of it. Also, working with very funny people, you’re in the moment with Marissa and with Ryder, who are both brilliant actors. Things would happen and that became part of the story. We would just shoot all of this madness within four days and it became what it became.

How many takes does it take to get what you need when you have that kind of freedom?
Well, when they’re laughing, and you can see everyone behind you [on set] laughing, that’s what I enjoy most. It’s also just a group effort. Everybody’s brainstorming, and that’s the magic of it.

Do you ever just want someone to tell you exactly what to do?
Yes and no. You’re dealing with time, you’re dealing with lighting. How can we make this happen quickly? But I try to be the least problematic. That was one of the funny things about doing this. On set they were like, “Can you be ready, in drag by 7am?” And I go, “Yeah, you’re doing a TV show for me. I can be ready anytime. Whatever you want.” You try to be as prepared as possible, but you never know what’s to come and that makes it magical.

Besides Drag Race, what you’re most known for is your stand-up, but have you had a lot of improv experience?
Well, 90 percent of my show is improv. You have an outline and you go with it. But I enjoy and audience. This January is 21 years of doing drag, so I’ve dealt with four people in the audience or I’ve had 2,000. It’s been a crazy opportunity for me, but it’s where I’m most comfortable. Most queens do an album, they want to sing (and they shouldn’t). Whereas for me, it was always interacting with people. That’s what I love most and that’s why I’ve been traveling with my stand-up show as much as I have.

Well, what has it been like transitioning from performing for a live audience to performing for the camera?
It’s interesting because you don’t get that immediate reaction when you’re filming, obviously. You don’t get the immediate laugh from people, but it’s also fun. It’s like walking a tightrope. Here we go! Let’s do it!

So, do you consider the version of “yourself” that you’re playing on the show a character?
Well, yes and no. We chose for the show not to be my real life, so it wouldn’t be me as myself—as far as me getting into drag and all that madness. We didn’t want any of that. We just wanted to establish the character: this is Bianca, and this is Bianca’s life. It’s what I deal with, but it’s also ridiculous and campy and fun—which is what I think is probably what people think my life is. But, you know, when I have the opportunity to be in a wig, comedy happens. That was the appealing part of it.

I guess that’s a weird thing that’s particular to drag. When you’re in drag you’re in this persona that is partially you, but you’re not really yourself.
I mean, what I’ve always said is that if I don’t wear a wig, I’m called a nasty fag. I wear a wig and I’m called hysterical. It’s just the packaging.

How did you get so many boldfaced names to make cameos?
This is one of those things, when you live in a bubble you don’t really realize how many people watch Drag Race. I was most impressed by the roster of people that came in, but also how many people are fans of [Drag Race] and were very happy to be a part of it. The fact that they even knew who I was was a huge compliment! That’s the magic of World of Wonder.

Also, because a lot of [the guest stars] live in a world where they deal with a script and they deal with structured material, they could play and have fun, which was a total hoot! Kristen Johnson was one of my favorites because she is all over the place and wild and so much fun in the moment. So her part just kept getting bigger and bigger.

Who were you most surprised to find out was a fan of yours?
Charo! I remember being a child, because I’m old enough to remember watching The Love Boat and seeing Charo play her guitar on the show. It was fascinating to be in the company of Charo. She is such a fuckin’ hoot! The outtakes of what took place are even funnier than what’s actually in the show. It’s one of those things where, it’s someone that I’ve seen on TV for many, many years and to see her in person, it was just insane to me to actually be in the moment with Charo.

bianca-tori-spelling-8

How many times did you have to grab Tori Spelling’s tit to get that scene in the car right?
[Laughs] I think we only did it once! It was like, get in the car and roll! But she was quite fun. I have to say, I had preconceived thoughts about what she would be like, but she totally made fun of herself and was a riot. I think it’s a side of her that people don’t normally get to see.

You mentioned earlier that you’re touring with your stand-up show. Has it changed much since the election?
Oh! Well, I was traveling before the election, and I had one date after the election, so I was flying to Texas when the actual day was happening. I had no Internet on the flight and I was losing my mind and then people behind me just started screaming. And you don’t want to hear people screaming on a plane! And that’s how I found out.

So I went and did the show, and it was awkward because I did have a few political jokes. But it was interesting to see what a different world it was literally in a matter of hours. But I try to stay away from politics in general because you never know who you’re offending. There have been moments lately with Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes which I thought were pretty fascinating, to see people turn on them because of their views. I’m kind of in a separate category: You know I’m a drag queen, you know I’m gay, you know what you’re getting into. I don’t like to alienate anybody, but there are a couple of jokes about [the election], a few that I’ve added since.

Have you noticed a shift in the way audiences react to you?
Not necessarily. I’m an acquired taste, so they know what they’re getting into, I think. If you watch Drag Race, you get it. If you follow me, you know what I’m doing. But it’s been great to get to work and be funny in this world that’s so fucked up!

AIDS Activist Peter Staley Is Ready to Get Arrested Fighting Trump: INTERVIEW

AIDS Activist Peter Staley Is Ready to Get Arrested Fighting Trump: INTERVIEW

Peter Staley was one of the driving forces in ACT UP, the pioneering 1980s-90s AIDS street activist group that did outrageous things like covering the home of right-wing Senator Jesse Helms in a giant condom to push for better HIV/AIDS research, services and laws.

Daily ResistThese days, in addition to being a major figure in How to Survive a PlagueDavid France’s epic new account of the raging ACT UP years, he’s been teaching activism 101 to Harvard undergrads.

Here, he gets super-specific about what activists will have to do to gain traction against Trump in the years ahead, especially to protect health care. (For one thing, he says, stop wasting your energy on turning the Electoral College!)

“The necessity of large demos is going to be a key component of anti-Trumpism,” he says. To those ends, he urges everyone who can — woman, man or otherwise — to join him at the Women’s March on D.C. on Jan. 21. And he stresses that public protest usually doesn’t entail getting arrested — though if you plan to, work in a coalition to do it the smart way and make it count. Staley certainly plans to.

If you really wanna change something, you better know the subject backwards and forwards.

Some highlights from the interview:

“ACT UP was known for doing its homework and becoming experts in the issues that we were fighting for. If you really wanna change something, you better know the subject backwards and forwards.”

“We need to pick the right targets. In a sense, ACT UP had it easy because we were largely just fighting the AIDS epidemic and our issues were pretty obvious and our targets were within a narrow range. What we’re facing now is an overwhelming number of possible targets and it’s confusing, it feels overwhelming, it boggles the mind, it makes you feel almost defeated before you start. So that’s gonna be a real challenge. We have to look at what’s in the range of the possible. A lot of the early targeting since the election, demanding recounts or an Electoral College revolt, is pretty much doomed to fail.”

“I plan on going to the Women’s March in D.C. I think everyone who can go should go. What a statement it will be if we can get enough people down there that it instantly becomes known as the largest gathering in D.C.’s history. To have that happen on the first day of a presidency, Americans coming together to say, ‘This president does not represent us, we will not stand silently by for this scam artist.’ It will be a sign to the rest of the world that this is a very, very different game we’re facing.”

Everyone has to add a little bit of activism to their life. I’m not saying you have to get arrested — I’m talking about legal demonstrations.

“Republicans are saying that they want to ‘repeal and replace’ Obamacare, but the ‘replace’ stuff is bullshit. Medicare and Medicaid have huge constituencies relying on them and we can use those bodies at protests. We need some sort of Standing Rock action on health care that’s persistent and can grow over time. I don’t know whether the best target is Paul Ryan’s house outside D.C. with hundreds of people legally protesting and some kind of legal encampment where they can stay every night. That’s something I’m thinking about.”

“We’re in this mess today because too many of us sat on the sidelines. Everyone has to add a little bit of activism to their life. I’m not saying you have to get arrested — I’m talking about legal demonstrations. We just need you to show up at one or two huge anti-Trump rallies every year. We’re gonna needs tens of thousands of bodies in the street for this fight. Follow what’s happening online by reading quality sources like the Atlantic, the New York Times, Democracy Now. Get over your bitching about the Times. They are still doing the most hard-hitting journalism in the country and you should be paying for your subscription.”

“Give a small monthly donation to the ACLU and also to a smaller direct-action group like Health GAP. Local civil-disobedience groups really need your help to pull of their actions.”

LOUISIANA JUDGE STRIKES DOWN GOVERNOR’S EXECUTIVE ORDER PROTECTING LGBTQ STATE WORKERS: HRC and Forum for Equality issued the following statements in response to a ruling yesterday by the 19th Judicial District Court striking down Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards’ executive order protecting LGBTQ state workers and contractors from discrimination: “This is a setback with serious consequences for LGBTQ state employees and contractors throughout Louisiana,” said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. “No one should face unfair and unjust discrimination simply because of who they are or whom they love. Upon appeal, we are hopeful that justice will ultimately prevail and these important non-discrimination protections will be restored.” Forum for Equality Executive Director Sarah Jane Brady added, “Forum for Equality is confident that the Governor will continue to fight for the rights of the LGBT community in this state.  It is important at this time to be able to send a message to all people and businesses that Louisiana is moving forward and standing on the right side of history.” More from HRC and The Times-Picayune.

Meanwhile, many states taking steps to protect LGBTQ people: Will Greenberg (@WRGree) of Mother Jones reports on HRC’s new State Equality Index showing that despite a slew anti-LGBTQ bills raised in 2016, the community also saw a number of wins. “There has definitely been some good to come out of the last 12 months,” HRC Regional Field Director Lynne Bowman tells Greenberg. ROY MOORE’S DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO UNDO HIS SUSPENSION FROM THE ALABAMA SUPREME COURT: Yesterday, HRC slammed suspended Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore for his last-ditch appeal to the Alabama Court of the Judiciary to restore his salary and ability to participate in legal decisions. “This is the desperate final act of Roy Moore’s failed campaign to restore his position on the Alabama Supreme Court after flagrantly and willfully attempting to block marriage equality at every turn,” said Eva Kendrick, state manager for the Human Rights Campaign Alabama. “Roy Moore is wasting the court’s time and Alabama taxpayer money, and we urge members of the Court of the Judiciary to stand by their decision.” In September, the Alabama Court of the Judiciary suspended Moore from the bench for the remainder of his term, due to his unethical and extralegal actions surrounding marriage equality. Moore’s term is up in 2018, and he will be unable to run for the office of Supreme Court justice again in Alabama as he will be past the office’s age restriction. The nine-member Court of the Judiciary found Moore unanimously guilty of all six charges brought against him. Earlier this year, HRC Alabama initiated the #NoMoore campaign to remove Moore from the Alabama Supreme Court for his blatant legal and ethical failings.
