Australian Cowboy Couple Makes The Case For Marriage Equality

Australian Cowboy Couple Makes The Case For Marriage Equality

Australia still — somehow! — does not have marriage equality. This is mostly due to a lack of backbone by their politicians, since an overwhelming majority of Australian voters supports the freedom to marry but there is still enough vocal resistance to make elected officials nervous about taking a stand.

As a result, the country’s seen a humiliating series of suggested solutions, but no actual solutions. There are a few marriage bills floating around in Parliament, but the parties are too cowardly to bring them to a vote. Some politicians have tried to duck the issue altogether by proposing a nationwide vote — which would be unbelievably expensive, incite violence against LGBT people, and ultimately be pointless and non-binding.

So while much of the world moves at a brisk pace towards marriage equality, Australia has remained stationary. Amidst this frustrating failure of leadership, Australia’s queer citizens are continuing to push their useless elected officials to do something, anything, to enact full federal equality.

A lovely new video highlights Dan and Miki, two farmers who’ve been together for six years. They seem like just the nicest guys, and they’ve got the talking points down to a T. “We don’t want anything more than anyone else, we just want the same,” says Miki. “We have now found our voice, and we’re not going anywhere.”

Dan adds, “People generally don’t bat an eyelid when Miki and I are living and working amongst other farmers. We’re just Dan and Miki, and these are our cattle.” Wonderful. Here’s hoping Dan and Miki become instant online celebrities, because we can think of nothing sweeter than to see a whole series of videos about their adorable affection and rugged life.

Seth Meyers took a closer look on Monday night at how the 2016 election has come to an end.

In the final days of this campaign we have seen celebrity appearances on behalf of Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump b*tching about said appearances, the worst CNN split screen in history, the birth of the ‘Mazel Tov’ cocktail, the revelation that Ted Nugent’s genitals are black and blue, a horrific Trump mask, President Obama doing what he loves most–burning Trump, and the FBI announcing a big old ‘oopsie’ over its letter to congress.

Relive the end of the campaign with commentary from Seth (which makes this nightmare of an election somewhat fun and slightly less painful), below.

Hillary Clinton has long been pegged as ‘unlikable’, and more recently, in this election cycle, she has been skewered by some for lacking authenticity. On a special election eve episode of her show Full Frontal, political satirist Samantha Bee decided to address the charges–and call bullsh*t.

Cataloguing Clinton’s history of making herstory, Bee explained how ‘authenticity’ is something that has repeatedly got Clinton in trouble–like when she refused to stay at home, bake cookies, have teas, or take her husband’s last name.

Bee explained, “Hillary Clinton has spent the past forty years learning to mask her authenticity. Ever since the so-called natural state [Arkansas] couldn’t accept a normal human woman in her natural state with her own name and her brown hair and identity independent from the dude she was boning, don’t expect grandma to pivot on a dime now that authenticity is suddenly cool.”

So to those who are still on the fence about voting for Clinton (SMDH), Bee has a message for you: “If you cant bring yourself to vote for Hillary Clinton, I get it. I’m not voting for Hillary Clinton either. Im voting for Hillary-goddamn-brilliant-bada**-queen-Beyoncé-Rodham. I have a hunch she’s still in there.”

Wearing a jacket worn by Michael Jackson when he went to the White House to meet then President George H.W. Bush in 1990, Lady Gaga excited the crowd in Raleigh, North Carolina at a midnight rally for Hillary Clinton last night.

“Be a part of history. What I’m asking you is to be in this moment right now with us and fight for your future and the future of our children. It’s so amazing because no matter how absurd and mean he became, she smiled bravely. And she continued on…she kept going. And she kept fighting for women’s rights, she kept fighting for the care of our children, she kept fighting for those who are in need. And the truth is that Hillary Clinton has done this for her entire career. She didn’t just wake up one morning and decide she wanted to be president. She has had a career in politics that has spanned decades of experience, education, leadership, and wisdom.”

Added Gaga:

“She stands before us today proud, like a lady. She is ready to be president…What I see in this remarkable woman is that she is ready to restore peace in this country…Hillary Clinton is the one. Hillary Clinton is made of steel. Hillary Clinton is unstoppable!”

Clinton was joined by former President Bill Clinton and her daughter Chelsea at the packed event:

Meanwhile, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Donald Trump was finishing his campaign, critical of the celebrity star power that had come out for Clinton in recent days:

“We don’t need Jay Z or Beyonce,” Trump opened his remarks. “We don’t need Jon Bon Jovi. We don’t need Lady Gaga. All we need is great ideas to make America great again.”
