MNSBC Anchor to Rep. Steve King: ‘You OK with Steve Bannon Saying Liberal Dykes?’ – WATCH

MNSBC Anchor to Rep. Steve King: ‘You OK with Steve Bannon Saying Liberal Dykes?’ – WATCH

MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle pointedly questioned anti-gay congressman Steve King (IA) today about past homophobic remarks made by newly-named White House chief strategist for President-elect Trump, Steve Bannon.

Bannon, a former editor of Alt Right (read: White Supremacist) website Breitbart, Bannon is an infamous anti-semite, racist, misogynist homophobe.

King is a staunch supporter of Bannnon’s and called him a “brilliant strategist” and “dedicated patriot.” He has also derided what he terms “false accusations” against him.

When asked about Bannon’s anti-gay remarks, King pled ignorance.

As Talking Points memo notes, Ruhle put it to King thusly: “Just a few minutes ago I heard Steve Bannon on tape say ‘liberal dykes. You okay with that?”

The tape being referred to comes from a 2011 interview in which Bannon said conservative women are vilified by progressive because they are not a “bunch of dykes that came from the Seven Sisters schools up in New England.”

King appeared flummoxed by the question, responding, “I hadn’t heard that tape and I don’t know what the context of it would be in. So no, I wouldn’t say I was either okay with it or not okay with it.”

King then went on imply that disgusting comments made in years prior don’t matter because America elected Trump despite his P—y-gate.

You can listen to the Bannon interview in question, below.

MTV celebrates Transgender Awareness Week

MTV celebrates Transgender Awareness Week

Each year during Transgender Awareness Week (November 14 – 20), individuals, organizations, and media across the country participate to help raise visibility and awareness about transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address issues facing the community.

As in years past, MTV is featuring programming throughout the week to highlight stories of transgender and gender non-conforming people, including sharing original content on MTV’s social platforms and SnapChat Discover, while changing account logos to proudly display the transgender flag.

On Thursday at 9pm, MTV will air a new episode of True Life, “We Are Transitioning,” which follows two couples as one of the partners from each pair embarks on their journey of transition, followed by the premiere of the documentary, Transformation, at 10pm as part of the network’s Transgender Awareness Week programming initiative.

The hour-long documentary follows Madin Lopez, a non-binary hairstylist whose non-profit organization ProjectQ provides life-altering and gender-affirming makeovers to LGBTQIA and homeless youth. Lopez is brought on by the mentorship program, LifeWorks at the Los Angeles LGBT Center, to give six transgender and gender non-conforming teens–Ashton, Carman, Ashleah, Milo, Jessica-Jean, and Zander–greater assurance and confidence in being who they are, while they share in their own words their personal stories and struggles.

Nia Clark, producer on the documentary, Los Angeles LGBT Center LifeWorks Mentoring Coordinator, and transgender woman herself says:

“In this country, the transgender community at large is categorically rejected by society for not adhering to a limited binary standard of gender identity and expression. Trans youth are particularly vulnerable to this kind of discrimination. These makeovers are intended to provide six trans youth, and hopefully trans and gender expansive youth all over the world, with proof there are caring adults who support and admire them. At its core, this is not a makeover event; it is a global affirmation of people and gender in all forms.”

Watch the trailer for Transformation here.

Be sure to tune in to True Life and Transformation, back to back on Thursday, November 17, starting at 9pm on MTV. The documentary will also be live streamed for free on MTV’s Facebook page at 10:15pm.

On Tuesday, a special pre-screening was hosted by MTV and held at the Los Angeles LGBT Center, followed by a panel discussion on “The Future of Trans Images in the Media” moderated by TV and film writer for the Los Angeles Times Tre’Vell Anderson, with Madin Lopez, (pictured, l-r) actors Alexandra Grey (TransparentChicago Med), Elliot Fletcher (Shameless, The Fosters), Jen Richards (Her StoryNashville), and the filmmakers of the documentary Katelyn Howes and Melissa Johnson.

All of this is part of MTV’s multi-year Look Different campaign which spotlights issues of race, gender, and anti-LGBTQ bias while providing resources for support and celebrating the resilience of people in their communities.

Popular YouTuber Jeydon Wale Comes Out As Transgender

screen-shot-2016-11-16-at-1-40-45-pm

“Hi, my name is Jeydon Wale and I am female to male transgender — holy shit.”

So reveals the popular YouTube star in an emotional video posted on November 13th, in which Wale says he’s “always been a boy… [but] my body said otherwise at birth.”

I felt so alone. The people around me were not accepting me…I felt like I was suffocating. I felt like I was drowning. I felt like my skin was smothering me and I was trapped in my body and it honestly felt like a nightmare that was never, ever going to end,” he said.

“I never thought people would love and accept me for who I am…I just can’t thank you enough; thank you for letting me be myself, something the world was trying so hard to take away from me…You guys are the reason why I’m still here and I want to show you how happy I am.”

NEW MUSIC: Martha Wainwright, David Bowie, Sleigh Bells, REM, Westworld Does Radiohead

NEW MUSIC: Martha Wainwright, David Bowie, Sleigh Bells, REM, Westworld Does Radiohead

david-bowie

This week in New Music: Martha Wainwright shines on solo album number four, David Bowie (above) gets the reissue treatment on Legacy best of, Sleigh Bells branch out on album number four, REM release a demo version of “Shiny Happy People” ahead of an anniversary edition of Out of Time and listen to the haunting piano covers of Radiohead and The Cure from Westworld.

Martha Wainwright – Goodnight City

martha-wainwright-goodnight-cityMartha Wainwright perhaps went a touch off the boil on 2012’s Come Home to Mama, her third solo album.

On album number four, Goodnight City she is well back on form.

Probably best known for her confessional and sometimes angry alt-country and folk-pop (see “BMFA”, “Heart’s Club Band”), there are many tracks on this album that fit into that genre and will please existing fans. They are in fact some of the best songs on the album but Wainwright also dabbles in straightforward pop and a touch of punk to great effect.

Coupled with a number of collaborations with friends and family (“Look Into My Eyes” is a duet with aunt Anna McGarrigle, “Franci” was written by brother RufusGoodnight City is superb.

David Bowie – Legacy

david-bowie-legacyIt’s Christmas so it’s shameless cash-in time. As Morrissey said:

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !

Re-evaluate the songs

Double-pack with a photograph

Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

It’s hard to know what these albums are for. There’s nothing here that’s new to interest fans for example. Included is a “previously unreleased” version of “Life on Mars.”

However, with over 39 tracks most of Bowie’s greatest hits are collected here and the 2-disc package is (1) a perfect intro for the kids and (2) a wonderful reminder of what a talent the man was.

With remastered versions of the classics, the album sounds absolutely stunning with a decent set of headphones.

The Prince vaults are on there way soon. Leonard Cohen can’t be far behind.

Sleigh Bells – Jessica Rabbit

sleigh-bells-jessica-rabbitOn album number four, New York noise pop duo Sleigh Bells sensibly branch out to embrace a new(ish) sound for Jessica Rabbit.

The album is still instantly recognizable as Sleigh Bells, ripping open as it does with the sonic blast of “It’s Just Us Now.” However that song moves in a different direction for it’s last 30 seconds, relaxing into a synthy groove that informs a lot of what follows.

While previous albums were raucous with touches of brilliance, Jessica Rabbit is a more considered affair and all the better for it.

Alongside Derek Miller’s noise, Alex Krauss’s vocals are crisper than ever and so verging-on-pop at times you might think you’re listening to actual dreampop.

While “I Can Only Stare” can only be described as lush pop, at times the album sounds like Spice Girls meets Cocteau Twins, something that makes absolute sense when you think about it.

A brilliant and sometimes jarring album receiving a modicum of mainstream success.

More please.

REM

With a 25th anniversary release of Out Of Time just around the corner which will include an unreleased track, b-sides anbd various demos, just out is this early instrumental version of “Shiny Happy People.” An interesting release as it strips away the money-making pop overtones of the single release to reveal a track that remains totally classic REM. With Michael Stipe announcing recently that he wants to get back into the game, a reunion can’t be far away.

Listen here.

Westword Piano Covers

My irrelevant take on Westworld: meh.

However, the piano covers of RadioheadThe Cure and others are stunners.
