GLAAD works with Tinder to create trans-inclusive app update

Today, Tinder announced a significant update to its dating app that welcomes transgender and gender non-conforming users to add information about their gender identity to their profiles and be their most authentic selves on the platform.

A few months ago, Tinder, the world’s leading social app for meeting new people, called on GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program team and trans consultant Andrea James to help the company create a more inclusive and welcoming platform for transgender and gender non-conforming users. Trans people who use Tinder are, like all other users, looking to find the right match and make meaningful connections.

GLAAD consulted with Tinder on how to better serve the community by helping figure out ways for people to be more authentically themselves on the platform, while also working with the company to provide information and resources to help educate Tinder’s support staff on how to address issues of harassment and trans people sometimes being unfairly reported and banned.

“It sends a strong message of acceptance when a platform like Tinder clearly tells its users that transgender people are welcome,” said Nick Adams, director of GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program. “Trans people who use Tinder are, like all other users, looking to form relationships and find the right match. Tinder’s update allows trans users to be themselves on the platform, and makes it clear that Tinder is committed to inclusion. This update reflects a growing awareness that trans people are part of the fabric of everyday life, which in turn, accelerates acceptance for transgender and gender non-conforming people.”

Prior to the update, users had only two options when selecting their gender: man or woman. For users who identified as transgender or gender non-conforming, they were limited in the ways they were able to identify on the platform. With today’s update, users now can add information about their gender from the settings screen, where they can fill in whatever word best describes their gender identity.

In addition, all users can now choose to display their gender on their profile.

For some time, trans users had also expressed frustration and dissatisfaction with Tinder because they were sometimes being reported and banned simply for being trans. With this update, Tinder has allocated resources to its support team, which includes educating the company’s staff about the challenges facing the transgender community, and has made a commitment to welcome back to the app any users who were unfairly banned due to their gender.

Looking Creator Michael Lannan: “People Have To Support Gay Shows”

Looking Creator Michael Lannan: “People Have To Support Gay Shows”

lookingmain

The story of three best friends living in San Francisco and tackling the hopes, fears, and challenges of modern gay men captured the hearts of fans for two seasons.

Though the series was given the axe at the end of its sophomore season, HBO thankfully greenlit a film version, giving the creators a rare chance to wrap up loose ends – and the fans a chance to see more of the cast stripped down and sexed up.

Now the entire saga will be available as a single box set when Looking: The Complete Series Debuts on Blu-ray and DVD November 15.

To remember the series in all its queer glory, we sat down with Looking creator Michael Lannan to chat about the show’s impact, legacy, and the need to support LGBTQ shows and programs of all sorts.

How does it feel to have the entire Looking series and film finally released as one big saga?
It’s cool and strange to be able to hold a box in my hand of all these stories we created over the last few years, but I’m excited for people to see it as this whole package because we always thought of it as one big story divided up into smaller pieces.

What was the initial spark that lit your creative fire?
There wasn’t any kind of modern take on sexuality and gay men on television at that moment. I was a big fan of the U.K. version of Queer as Folk, that blew my mind when I saw it, because it was so modern and unlike anything else at that time. I would never compare our show to that one, but I think it was a big inspiration to do something that was equally provocative and contemporary.

What are some of your favorite stories fans have told you about how Looking has personally inspired them in their own lives?

Looking5_2
There have been so many, but we had a couple of older men who told us they came out after watching the show because it showed them such a different vision of being gay then they had seen before. I don’t think any of us can take credit for that exactly because obviously coming out is such a personal thing, but I’m so pleased that the show has helped people think about sexuality a little differently.

How did you feel when you found out the show was cancelled?
It was really difficult because we did have ideas about what season 3 could be and there were stories for all the characters.

But you got the rare chance to tie up some loose ends with the movie
Yes, and wish we could’ve had the chance to get into more of the ideas we had for some of the characters, but we just didn’t have time to go into those stories fully. In the end, we decided to make the film about Patrick because he’s sort of always been the heart of the show and the one we ride with the most. We decided to let him weave the stories of the others together as much as we could.

cast2Was there a particular development you had in mind for a character that you would like to have had the chance to explore but didn’t?
I was personally interested in what would happen to Dom if he had to take care of somebody else because he was always such a self-centered guy and interested in his own business. Plus, he started the show as someone who was obsessed with youth, so I was curious what would happen if he became the daddy in a relationship.

We don’t often get to see a TV series where gay men are a majority of the main characters. Given the progress we’ve made, why do you think that’s still a problem in 2016?
For one thing, people have to support gay shows. Because frankly, it is a fairly small audience in the grand scheme of things – at least in the way network executives think. So if gay audiences don’t get behind a show about gay characters fully, it probably won’t last. But I think there will be other shows with gay leads soon. It has to just be a confluence of the right factors, like the right creators who find a new kind of language and characters that resonate and feel contemporary as well as executives who are excited to be in the cultural dialogue.

hbo-looking

For you, what’s been the best part of working on this series?
My favorite TV shows that inspired me were full of great characters who made me see something in a different way, no matter how small. So if we’ve achieved that at all than I’m really proud.

Bernie Sanders Offers Colbert the ‘Worst Case Scenario’ for the Trump Presidency: WATCH

Bernie Sanders Offers Colbert the ‘Worst Case Scenario’ for the Trump Presidency: WATCH

Bernie Sanders

“It’s been a tough week,” said Bernie Sanders to Stephen Colbert on last night’s The Late Show, revealing how he feels Trump won:

“Above and beyond the incredible bigotry of the Trump campaign, what he did was he tapped into a lot of pain and anxiety and angst that the American people are feeling which is very rarely reported in the media or understood by the punditry….At the end of the Trump campaign Trump was posing as a hero of the working class of America. Now I happen not to believe him. I hope I’m wrong.”

Sanders also said that doesn’t mean sentiment toward Trump is good:

“Hillary Clinton ended up with two million more votes than Donald Trump. So don’t think of this as a massive success for Trump. He lost the popular vote. Second of all, he comes into the White House as the least popular candidate in the history of this country.”

The former Democratic candidate also spoke about where we go next after Trump’s election:

“The truth is, Democrats should not be losing to a candidate who insults so many people, who wants to give huge tax breaks to the top two tenths of 1 percent and who rejects climate change…How are we losing these elections? Something is fundamentally wrong and what I’m trying to do right now is bring about structural changes in the Democratic Party so that it becomes a grassroots party.”

Watch:

Sanders has a new book out called Our Revolution and says he’s still more optimistic about the nation than when he began his campaign.

Asked to provide an autopsy of the Democratic Party, Sanders said it must be transformed:

“The Democrats cannot continue to be run by what I call ‘the liberal elite’…good meaning people…the party has got to transform itself into a party that opens the door, brings people into the party. Trump’s views are a minority….Our job right now, and this is terribly important at this moment. What you do now is get involved heavily into the political process. When millions of people stand up and fight back we will not be denied.”

He also offered a “worst case scenario” when asked by Colbert:

“The worst case, if not Trump himself, people around Trump are saying, ‘hmm, let’s see, we’ve got the House, the Senate, we’ve got the White House, we’re going to have the Supreme Court, we’re going to change the rules of the game so we don’t lose anymore.’ … They can make it worse by doing away with all campaign finance laws…and on top of that they will move forward more vigorously in voter suppression. Making it harder for poor people, for old people, for people of color to actually vote. Put up all kinds of restrictions. You do those things -unleash billionaires to buy elections – make it hard for millions of people to participate, they think they can control this government indefinitely.”

Watch:

In related news, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) is under pressure to back Sanders (I-Vt.) as chairman of the Democratic Policy and Communications Center, the Hill reports:

Schumer, who was in charge of the Senate Democratic messaging operation this year, will replace Sen. Harry Reid (Nev.) as leader, and Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin will likely keep his job as whip.

Sanders’s allies say he would be a good choice for the third-ranking position because he had phenomenal success mobilizing voters during the Democratic presidential primaries. That showed he knows how to put together a message that resonates, they argue.
