Disgraced Former Congressman Aaron Schock Is Being Indicted
Former Republican Congressman Aaron Schock is expected to be indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday.
The disgraced anti-gay Illinois lawmaker resigned from his seat in 2015 after questions arose about his alleged misuse of taxpayer dollars.
Schock’s attorney, George Terwilliger, called the expected charges a “misuse” of prosecutorial power by the Justice Department.
“This indictment will look bad, but underneath it is just made-up allegations of criminal activity arising from unintentional administrative errors,” Terwilliger said in a statement. “These charges are the culmination of an effort to find something, anything, to take down Aaron Schock.
Federal prosecutors in Illinois were expected to announce charges later Thursday.
At a news conference outside Peoria Heights Village Hall, attorney George Terwilliger challenged the timing of the indictment days after a national election and said it appeared “politically calculated.”
Schock himself, in brief comments, said prosecutors had spent “millions of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to manufacture a crime.”
Schock’s troubles began when photos of his Downton Abbey-inspired congressional office leaked and it was then discovered that he illegally accepted a designer’s services for free.
In March of 2015, the FBI began an investigation into Schock’s spending habits, an investigation that ultimately revealed “untoward allegations” about Schock that would damage his reputation, according to his lawyers.
Schock has long been rumored to be gay. In an interview given after Schock resigned from office, Schock’s father said that his son is not gay.
As a Republican lawmaker, Schock had a history of taking anti-LGBT positions. He voted no on a bill enforcing against hate crimes, and does not support marriage equality.

PETER THIEL. His Donald Trump bet paid off: “He won’t be moving to Washington, Mr. Thiel made clear in an interview Wednesday afternoon. He is unlikely to have a formal role. He has no desire to fulfill his youthful dream of joining the United States Supreme Court. But he will have a voice.
NBC NEWS. What we got wrong.
BEN CARSON. I’ll help repeal and replace Obamacare: “I think the replacement obviously must come first and it must be something that is very appealing and easy to understand. And then, only then, would you dismantle what’s in place,” the retired neurosurgeon said in an interview. Asked if he intends to be involved in designing that plan, Carson said, “Yes, of course.”
PROTEST. Thousands of anti-Trump protesters hit the streets in major cities: “Chanting ‘Not my president!’ and ‘Racist, sexist, anti-gay, Donald Trump has got to go, hey hey,’ New Yorkers marched from Union Square, holding signs and dressed in American flags, to their final destination — the president-elect’s Trump Tower in Midtown. Many also shouted ‘F— Donald Trump!’ and ‘F— the wall’ as they headed toward Trump’s main residence and campaign headquarters in Manhattan.”
REINCE PRIEBUS. Chief of staff? “On Wednesday, Priebus was being widely discussed by Trump insiders as a likely candidate for White House chief of staff, though RNC insiders said he would be a shoo-in for an unprecedented fourth consecutive two-year term at the party’s helm, if he wanted it. One cracked that Trump might reward Priebus by nominating him to be ambassador to Greece.”
CONCEAL AND CARRY. Gun stocks plunge: “Shares of Smith & Wesson dropped 15% on Wednesday, while stocks of Sturm Ruger fell by 14% at the close of markets, according to CBS Moneywatch. Politics often affect the stocks’ performances, and financial analysts have noted that Republican victories might hurt Smith & Wesson. A Republican White House and Congress could be “net-negative” for the company because “it eliminates any realistic fear of gun regulation, which has been a major driver of gun sales over the past eight years,” according to a Wedbush Securities analysis cited by the 24/7 Wall St. blog.

Social network adds fields for HIV status, undetectable, and PrEP use: “In a draft blog post provided to TheBody.com announcing the new changes, Jack Harrison-Quintana, director of Grindr for Equality, said that the platform hopes to “create an open dialogue among our users about sexual health. Honesty, compassion, and education lay the foundation to make Grindr an even safer space for guys to connect, and we can all contribute to getting there.” ‘Users won’t be able to filter who they see in the app based on HIV status,’ he noted. ‘Filling out the HIV status field is entirely optional.’”

Judge blocks sale of building in battle over gay man’s estate: “On Nov. 1, Judge Nora Anderson issued a temporary restraining against four nieces and nephews of William Cornwell selling the 69 Horatio St. townhouse he bought in 1979. Anderson’s order gave them until Nov. 18 to show cause.’ Cornwell and Doyle began their relationship in 1958. Cornwell bought them wedding rings after New York legalized same-sex marriage in 2011. According to Doyle, Cornwell’s declining health kept them from going to the city Marriage Bureau before Cornwell’s death in 2014.”

Why are gay guys convinced the world is full of bottoms? “And so you have it—by lending tops a position of privilege in our gay hierarchies (by remarking upon their supposed rarity, or by accusing each other of being bottoms,) we reinforce the same misogynist and patriarchal tendencies of our straight brethren. The Angry Straight White Male Crowd Stood By Trump. Now They Reap The Rewards.
For the nominee of a major political party, Donald Trump didn’t have a lot of committed supporters. In fact, major factions of the GOP elite opposed his campaign. But there was a hardy band that stuck with him through the scandals and tweetstorms. Since Trump prizes loyalty above all else, this group stands to reap the rewards of his presidency.
Here’s a list of six winners for whom Election Night meant a big boost to their political fortunes long after they should have expired.
Vladimir Putin
Putin ran the most successful effort by a foreign power to interfere with the American electoral process ever. The steady drip of leaks from Clinton’s emails was courtesy of Russian hackers, according to U.S. intelligence agencies. But not according to Trump, who claimed otherwise even while encouraging Russia’s hacking. It’s clear that Trump loves Putin, and Putin returns the favor. The Russian leader was quick to congratulate Trump, via telegram, calling for improved ties between the U.S. and Russia. Oddly, for a political party that was once the greatest foe of Putin and authoritarian Russian governments, Republicans will do nothing to punish this outlandish attack on American democracy.
Peter Thiel
The Facebook billionaire is no lover of democracy either, so he placed his bets on the candidate most likely to disrupt it. Even while most respectable figures were fleeing from Trump last month, Thiel doubled down with a $1.25 million donation and an incomprehensible defense of Trump at the National Press Club. In a statement, Thiel said Trump will need “all hands on deck” because “he has an awesomely difficult task, since it is long past time for us to face up to our country’s problems.”
The Religious Right
The family values leadership had no problem standing by Trump when he boasted about sexually assaulting women. Their focus has always been on the Supreme Court, and they will be rewarded for their loyalty. But they will hardly be satisfied with only that. “Our nation has an opportunity over the next 4 years to make freedom mean something again.” Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said in a tweet, suggesting the scope of the right’s ambitions.
Breitbart and other crackpot media sites
One thing this election proved was how much clout the mainstream media has lost. Lunacy works, and the Trump campaign proves it. Breitbart.com, with its endless promotion of Trump and crazy headlines, is a big winner. Its leader, Steve Bannon, take a leave from the site to act as the Trump campaign’s CEO. It’s not just Breitbart that wins. A slew of lesser known but influential sites, like Alex Jones’ Infowars, have all been Trump boosters and are now gloating about their candidate’s success. TrumpTV anyone? He could be the first American president to have his own propaganda arm–much like Putin does in Russia.
The alt-right
White nationalism was once a declining fringe belief. Not any more. “We’re the establishment now,” Richard Spencer, who has called for “peaceful ethnic cleansing,” tweeted. Trump regularly retweeted from alt-right accounts and adapted many of its themes, including anti-Semitism. It didn’t hurt that Breitbart (see above) served as the communications channel for alt-right ideas. Needless to say, the rise of white nationalism is not a good thing for us.
Milo Yiannopoulos
Yiannopoulos, the gay Breitbart troll who claims to be sexually attracted to Trump, turned up at the Trump victory party to lord it over the losers. “American progressives should be thanking their lucky stars that Donald Trump is the worst thing that happened, because you have been lying to and about people for decades,” he said. A Trump presidency gives Yiannopoulos a bigger platform from which to troll (and undoubtedly monetize).
